2 The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, through the Department of Cultural Affairs, in order to encourage the professionalization of young conductors who are developing an international career, promotes the first edition of the OFUNAM International Conducting Competition, 2018, with the participation of an internationally renowned jury. The jury is composed of Massimo Quarta, conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (OFUNAM), as President of the Jury; Atso Almila, student of Jorma Panula at the Sibelius Academy and one of the greatest professors of Orchestral Education of today; Joseph Caballé Domeneq, General Director (GMD) of the Opera and Staatskapelle de Halle-Saale; Claire Gibault, the first woman to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic, and Jorge Mester, artistic director of the Boca del Río Philharmonic. This competition is inspired by the Eduardo Mata International Conducting Competition, organized by Instrumenta Oaxaca and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. The OFUNAM was the Resident Orchestra of the competition during the 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009 editions. The mission of the OFUNAM International Conducting Competition, with a biannual format, is to strengthen and boost the artistic formation of the participants, as well as to promote the music of Mexican composers in the world. 3 JURY Massimo Quarta (president) He won the Philips Opera Prima Award at the Vittorio Veneto Competition and the Paganini Award at the International Violin Competition. In 2004 he was awarded the Choc Prize by Le Monde de la Musique magazine. He has appeared on the main European stages. In addition to his career as a soloist, he has explored conduction with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and other internationally renowned orchestras. He teaches at the Conservatory of Italian Switzerland in Lugano. Atso Almila Composer, conductor, professor of conducting and orchestra schooling at the Sibelius Academy of the Helsinki University of Arts. Jorma Panula's student at the Sibelius Academy Master Classes and guest teaching in China (Shanghai), Sweden, Norway, Ireland, Spain, Czech Republic and Switzerland. Compositions include six operas, five symphonies, concertos for several instruments, music for chamber ensembles, theatre and film. Columnist for a few Finnish papers. Josep Caballé Domenech Music Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bogota, General Music Director of the Opera and Staatskapelle Halle-Saale, Germany, and now in his seventh season as Music Director of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Caballé Domenech enjoys combining his conducting career with a great symphonic and operatic repertoire. He was awarded the Aspen Prize from the American Academy of Conducting and selected as Protégé in the inaugural cycle of the Sir Colin Davis Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. Claire Gibault She began her career at the Opéra National de Lyon before becoming the first woman to conduct the Filarmonica della Scala and the musicians of the Berlin Philharmonic. Over the years Gibault has been invited to conduct prestigious orchestras such as London s Royal Opera House. In addition to her symphonic career, she has conducted many opera productions. A passionate advocate of contemporary music, she regularly collaborates with leading composers. She formed the Paris Mozart Orchestra, giving some thirty performances each season. Jorge Mester Mexican Jorge Mester is an international top-level conductor, recognized for the excellence and prominence he brings to every orchestra he leads. He is also the Laureate Director of the prestigious Aspen Music Festival, which he headed as Musical Director for twenty-one years. He was Artistic Director of the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra and is currently the Artistic Director of the Boca del Río Philharmonic Orchestra. [2]

4 RULES Age of candidates The contest is open to orchestra conductors of any nationality born after April 26 th, Required documents Participants must submit the following information in the website: Online Application Form. Photocopy of passport or birth certificate (PDF, max. 300 Kb). Curriculum Vitae, maximum one page (28 double-spaced lines) (PDF, max. 300 Kb). Studies Certificates and/or other accrediting documents (PDF, max. 300 Kb). Two recommendation letters from prestigious musicians (performers or composers) (PDF, max. 300 Kb). One recent color photograph (JPG, min. 300 dpi). Video of a rehearsal or concert with orchestra, conducted by the applicant. (mp4 max. 3 Gb). It should include fragments of one classical work ( ), one romantic work ( ), and one work from the 20 th or 21 st centuries, as well as information about the repertoire, its order and its duration (overall minimum 10 minutes, maximum 15 minutes). Selection of participants The members of the jury of the competition will select a maximum of 12 candidates who will be invited to participate in the Preliminary Round. The selected candidates will be informed of their admission to the competition after July 17 th, The organizers of the Competition will cover accommodation (double room), food and transportation (Hotel Sala Nezahualcóyotl Hotel) of participants during all rounds of the competition. 5 COMPETITION Competition rounds. From September 17 th to 23 rd, 2018 The contest will consist of three rounds: Preliminary, Semifinal and Final, to be held in Mexico City. Preliminary Round. Up to 12 participants will be selected. Semifinal Round. Up to 6 contestants for the Semifinal. Final Round. Up to 3 contestants for the Final. The rounds of the competition will take place from September 17 th to 23 rd, 2018, with the following schedule: Round 1. Preliminary. Monday 17 th (first day) Four contestants will work with the orchestra for 35 minutes each. Round 1. Preliminary. Tuesday 18 th (second day) Four contestants will work with the orchestra for 35 minutes. Round 1. Preliminary. Wednesday 19 th (third day) Four contestants will work with the orchestra for 35 minutes. After the third day of the Preliminary Round, the jury will select a maximum of 6 participants for the Semifinal Round. Round 2. Semifinal. Thursday 20 th (first day) Three contestants will work with the orchestra for 50 minutes. The participant will decide the time to be allotted to each of the two works to be performed. (Obligatory work and a concert movement with a soloist chosen by participant) Round 2. Semifinal. Friday 21 st (second day) Three contestants will work with the orchestra for 50 minutes. The participant will decide the time to be allotted to each of the two works to be performed. (Obligatory work and a concert movement with a soloist chosen by participant) Upon completion of the Semifinal Round, the jury will select a maximum of three participants for the Final Round. Round 3. Final. Saturday 22 nd Orchestra rehearsal with the three finalists. Each of them will have a maximum of 50 minutes. The participant will decide the time to be allotted to each of the two works to be performed. The works to be interpreted will be one obligatory work and one symphony movement to be selected by draw. The order of performance in the rehearsal will be: 1 Luna and Brahms 2 Luna and Tchaikovsky 3 Luna and Dvorak Round 3. Final. Sunday 23 rd Concert with the three finalists. The order of performance in the concert will be: 1 Luna and Brahms 2 Luna and Tchaikovsky 3 Luna and Dvorak Deliberation and awards Audience and recording of the competition All rounds and the Final Round concert will be open to the public and may be recorded, filmed and broadcast on radio, television and/or streaming, without any economic compensation for the participants. 6 COMPETITION RESIDENT ORCHESTRA The Philharmonic Orchestra of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (OFUNAM) is the resident orchestra of the OFUNAM International Conducting Competition. Semifinal In this round, participants must conduct two works, one obligatory and one (work with soloist) to be selected by participant. Final In this round, participants must conduct two works, one obligatory and one to be selected by draw.
