3 MusiX a space not only to immerse in music but also to reflect upon musical experiences VIOLIN bows PIANO strings..from Western Classics to a Carnatic Climax.. 15 June p.m. Goethe-Institut Auditorium Samyuktha R - Violin Immanuel T - Piano This recital of Violin and Piano features a collection of varied classical compositions ranging from the Baroque to the Romantic eras by some of the renowned and innovative composers of Western classics alongside a couple of Indian classical and contemporary poetry. The repertoire comprises of a violin Concerto and Partita by Bach, Spanish Dance by Granados and Bach, Thais Meditation by Massenet interspersed with a Mahakavi Bharathiar s poem and a traditional Mangalam by Saint Thiyagaraja as the fitting finale. Narasimhan, founder of the Madras String Quartet. Also trained in South Indian carnatic music she has been performing regularly in India. She has completed her LTCL with distinction and is so adept and skillful in playing the violin that she captures the audience instantly and intensely. Immanuel holds an Associate of Trinity College London Diploma in Piano recital. He is a full time Pianist and has accompanied various soloists and instrumentalists in and around the city and South India. Having worked with some international musicians, he is the accompanist for the Madras Musical Association and also teaches piano.

4 EU FILM FESTIVAL 2018 in cooperation with Delegation of the European Union, Alliance Française of Madras and Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation European Union Film Festival 2018 invites you for the screening of a collection of 23 European films showcasing different genres of European Cinema! House without Roof Haus ohne Dach is about the journey of the siblings Liya, Jan and Alan who were born in the Kurdish area of the Iraq and grown up in Germany. The three of them want to fulfill their mother's last wish to bury her in her home village beside her husband who got killed in the war under the Saddam Hussein regime. On their nerve-wracking Kurdish-odyssey they are not only faced with their Kurdish extended family that does not accept the last wish of their mother but particularly with their own matters. In recent years they distanced from each other - everybody runs his own life - and whenever they are holding talks, they are mostly based on reproaches. In parallel with the run of their journey it is noticeable that in their home country the dimension of an awful conflict, that nobody can surmise, is heading for disaster.

5 FIFA count down begins.. in cooperation with Tamil Nadu Foot Ball Association Come together to enjoy the true spirit of FIFA World Cup 2018 on large screen at the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Chennai 6 15 July 2018 Goethe-Institut Auditorium st The FIFA World Cup 2018 will be the 21 FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It is scheduled to take place in Russia from 14 June to 15 July The final tournament will involve 32 national teams, which include 31 teams determined through qualifying competitions and the automatically qualified host team. Of the 32 teams, 20 will be making back-to-back appearances following the last tournament in 2014, including defending champions Germany, while Iceland and Panama will both be making their first appearances at a FIFA World Cup. A total of 64 matches will be played in 12 venues located in 11 cities. The finals will take place on 15 July at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. 6 FILM in cooperation with Tamil Nadu Football Association 10 July p.m. Goethe-Institut Auditorium followed by FIFA Semi-finals screening Der ganz große Traum Lessons of a dream Dir.: Sebastian Grobler 113 min Based on the true story of the teacher and football pioneer Konrad Koch, Lessons of a dream relates to the story of the beginnings of football in Germany and of a school class that develops into a real team when they are infected with their new teacher s football fever. Travelling back in time, the story depicts an era in which schools were still places where good breeding and order reigned and football itself (not the hooliganism, as the term later came to describe) was defined as an English disease by the media.

7 DIGITAL CONCERT HALL in cooperation with Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Britten s WAR REQUIEM with the National Youth Orchestra of Germany 11 July p.m. Goethe-Institut Auditorium Benjamin Britten War Requiem 88 min. for Soloists, large Choir, Children s Choir, large Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra Goethe-Institut invites the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra to its auditorium in a digital format with high definition video livestreaming for the connoisseurs of Western classical music of Chennai. The Digital Concert Hall with excellent sound and video is the best close-to-real experience one can get. On a special invitation of the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation, the National Youth Orchestra of Germany performed Benjamin Britten s 1966 War Requiem, a singular th work of 20 century musical history written for three vocalists, a boys choir, a mixed chorus, a chamber orchestra and a symphony orchestra, it is nothing less than a highly complex and immediately poignant musical contribution to the European idea of international understanding. The War Requiem, composed in 1961, is one of Benjamin Britten s highly personal anti-war statement with a moral and religious intent. Its origins date back to the Second World War, when a ten-hour bombing raid by the German Luftwaffe destroyed the entire city of Coventry in central England. After the war ended the church was consecrated in 1962 and Britten s War Requiem was performed there for the first time. The ethical rationalist spirit is obvious from the deliberate aestheticization of battle as such. This opus magnum draws its tremendous fascination, nervous tension and suggestive power from musical and structural contradictions. The tenor and baritone soloists reflect the horror of war, the chamber orchestra as voices of fallen soldiers, the soprano soloist, chorus and the immense yet transparent orchestra stand for the mourning of humanity while the young voices and the organ represent the remote mystical world far above the battlefields. It is not surprising that such a colossal work has an enormous emotional impact that not only moves the listeners but also produces quite diverse reactions perhaps like the pity of war and the joys of life.

8 FILM in cooperation with Tamil Nadu Football Association 15 July p.m. Goethe-Institut Auditorium followed by FIFA Finals screening Horizon Beautiful Dir.: Stefan Jäger 90 min Franz Arnold, a dubious football official with a lot of money, flies to Ethiopia to revamp his tarnished image with an apparent development aid project. In Addis Ababa, 12-year-old Admassu dreams of a career as a football player in Europe and tries to contact Arnold. The orphaned street kid hopes in vain that the Swiss man will help him get a spot in the FC Barcelona Football Youth Academy. In the end, he deliberately puts the foreigner in danger to receive his gratitude after saving him. Together, they flee to the mountains. Admassu loses control of his plan, but makes the right choice in the end.

9 CHENNAI INTERNATIONAL QUEER FILM FESTIVAL in cooperation with Orinam and Berlinale Spotlight Reel Desires: Chennai International Queer Film Festival July 2018 Goethe-Institut Auditorium Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan is pleased to bring you Reel Desires: Chennai International Queer Film Festival, July 27-29, Reel Desires is a three-day series of feature films, shorts and documentaries showcasing sexuality and gender diversity issues. Submissions this year include those that take the struggle for gender and sexuality rights to the original site of the struggle the family. Other films explore intersections among gender/sexuality movements with other struggles for social justice, and those that reflect the universality and specificity of LGBTIQA+ lives across space and time. The film festival is being held in association with Orinam, a local collective that has been working since 2003 to end gender- and sexuality- based discrimination and provide social and support spaces for the LGBTIQA+ communities in Chennai. Co-organizing the event are several community groups and NGOs.
