2 Welcome A Note from Nancy Miller, WGC President Hello Ladies! Rachel Coyle and Jessica Trask at the 2010 Involvement Fair. Officers and Section Leaders worked the WGC booth and collected almost 200 names: a new record! This was one part of the officer team's new recruiting strategy, which effectively raised our numbers to just over 100 women! Welcome, new members and returning members alike! We are lucky to have such a large and talented group of singers this year we actually have more members than ever before! Your commitment to one of the oldest organizations on campus continues the traditions that thrive today. I"m looking forward to this year and the many advancements we are making to improve our group cohesiveness, sound, and reputation on campus. We have already made great strides toward these goals at our retreat and will continue to make improvements throughout the year. It is an exciting time to be in the Women"s Glee Club, with many notable events coming up this year including the launch of our new Web site, a new CD recording, and a tour to Chicago! I am very proud of our group thus far and am honored to be able to make such great music and memories with all of you this year! See you in Glee, Nancy Conductor's Corner A word from Dr. Schnipke Off to a Great Start! In this first Medley, I just want to reiterate how pleased I am with the start of this fall quarter.!we had a wonderful turnout at auditions in not only quantity but also quality.!this extremely large and talented group of new members is proving to be an exciting addition to the group.!also, the veteran members, including the officers and section leaders, are doing an excellent job of providing leadership and using their talents and experience to help take the Women's Glee Club to the next level both organizationally and musically.!additionally, I'm very excited about our projects for the year, including the upcoming concert with the Kent State Women's Chorus, our traditional joint concerts with the OSU Men's Glee Club, our spring tour, and the new CD!!The Women's Glee Club has the potential for an incredible year of music making! As we approach the mid-term and as all of our schedules get more and more full, it is extremely important to plan ahead.!we have several performances between now and the end of the quarter and as the Women's Glee Club schedule gets more demanding, many of your academic projects, tests, papers, etc. will also begin to take priority.!take care to manage your time carefully and during performance weeks, be sure to make time to keep up with your academic commitments.!doing so will allow you to succeed academically while you enjoy making music with the Glee Club.!(It will also cut down on your stress levels during these busy times!) Once again, thank you for a wonderful start to the year!!i'm looking forward to working together to make the OSU Women's Glee Club an incredible organization that not only makes beautiful and exciting music, but also that is a source of pride for its membership, the School of Music, and the The Ohio State University. Dr. Schnipke Page 2

By Shannon Tarbutton As a kid, one of my favorite holidays was Halloween. Dressing up and pretending to be someone else (not to mention trick-or treating!) was the coolest thing ever! Of course, now those days of trick-or-treating are over,!but, never fear, for the Halloween concert is here!!! Every year the Women's Glee Club collaborates with various other School of Music groups to put on a Halloween-themed concert. This concert is relaxed and features not only some creative, "spooky" repertoire, but also the opportunity to dress in a costume! So, get your creative juices flowin' because you will be expected to wear a fabulous costume to the concert! But remember, when it comes to Halloween costumes, "modest is hottest." ;-) Skirts/shorts should be below the fingertips, no bare midriffs, and no low necklines. In general, if you're questioning it, you might want to add a layer under/over it or change your costume choice. The WGC leadership reserves the right to ask you to change or leave if your costume does not meet these guidelines or could be considered inappropriate. If you don't want to wear a costume, you can dress in all black as a "shadow." Most importantly, the Halloween concert is about having fun and making great music!! So get ready to showcase your classy, creative costumes and sing your hearts out at this year's Halloween celebration! :) WGC for the HalleBOOia! Concert in 2008 Page 3

4 WGC Kick-Off Retreat October 10th, 2010 Despite getting double-booked by the Union and scrambling for last minute locations and car-pools, the Kick-Off Retreat was a huge success. Dr. Schnipke's church was a phenomenal place to sing, and we all had a ton of fun bobbing for apples, choreographing crazy dance moves, and rappin' to Carmen Ohio. We all met new people and made new friends; and yes, one of our new friends just happened to know how to fly ;) Check out our "Slogos"... First Sopranos... we get HIGH! Alto 1... You only think you have the "melody" (We're better than you!) Second Sopranos... Second to None Talk about Section pride! Alto II... Going LOW since 1903 (We like being on the bottom) Someone's got to wear the pants in this choir! Page 4

5 While we all live we all will give Our best to Ohio "Our Best, Ohio": Behind the Music By Kelly Winner One of the things that makes the Men"s Glee Club so successful are their many traditional Buckeye songs. At the end of last year, Dr. Schnipke and the officers decided that the Women"s Glee Club should adopt their very our own Buckeye tune one that we wouldn"t have to share with the men! Over the summer, I worked on an independent study with Dr. Schnipke, who assigned me that task of finding our new song. Dr. Schnipke lent me a book called Songs of Ohio State University. Published in 1916, the book contains many Buckeye tunes that are still popular today in addition to some forgotten songs. In deciding which tune to arrange, it was my goal to find one that was not about the football team. I love the Buckeyes as much as the next girl, but thought we could find a song that appealed to a broader audience. Also, many songs in the book refer to a man"s days chasing women at OSU. Maybe I"m wrong, but I didn"t think those were great for the Women"s Glee Club. So, I came across the tune Our Best, Ohio by W.A. Dougherty, Jr. from the class of It was perfect! Now, what kind of style should I use to arrange it? I thought it was important for this to sound like the kind of song the Women"s Glee Club could have been singing for 100 years, so Dr. Schnipke and I agreed that it should sound a little like barbershop. Luckily, Dr. Schnipke knows a champion Sweet Adelaides (that"s women"s barbershop) performer. I got to meet with her and show her my arrangement and she made some suggestions on how to make it sound more like a Sweet Ad"s tune. By the end of the summer, I turned it in to Dr. Schnipke, who gave me an A for my independent study. But to be honest, my real grade comes from hearing the Glee Club sing the song. I hope you enjoy our new Buckeye tune and that singing it will become a WGC tradition for years to come! Thanks to Kelly for arranging our new Buckeye song... we love it and will sing with pride! 7 Don't Miss It! Highlights in the School of Music 5th Annual JWMS: Grand Concert with Joseph Lulloff and OSU Faculty (Friday, Oct. 22nd at 8pm in Welgel) Performance and Master Class with flutist Vieri Bottazzani (Monday, Oct. 25th at 6:30pm in Hughes) Wind Symphony Concert (Tuesday, Oct. 26th at 8pm in Welgel) Vera Cremeans (right) spent the summer performing in and touring with an opera in France. A Summer in France By Vera Cremeans Over the summer I spent 12 weeks in Perigueux, France and touring all over the Perigold region of France. While there I was employed by the Franco American Vocal Academy (FAVA) as singer and was offered the opportunity to study French language, sacred music, art song, and opera. The academy is an intensive study program designed for emerging, talented singers who seek a professional career in Opera, Operetta, or Concert music. The program is open to all nationalities, but accepts only 10 hired singers (my position) and then 30 student singers. During the day I sang two masses, one by Charles Gounod and one by Camille Saint-Saens, in several cathedrals all over the Perigord region. During the evening I performed the role of Cybele in the Offenbach opera Orphee aux Enfers. In addition to these regular performances, I performed for the Poulenc Society of Paris in a review entitled Chamins d'amour, art song concerts featuring the contemporary composer Isabelle Aboulker, and serveral operatic concerts in FAVA donor's castles in the French countryside. In my spare time I attended French language classes, ate great French food, and of course got in a lot of shopping! I had an amazing summer and I really enjoyed enriching my life as an artist, singer, and performer. If you would like to know more about FAVA or other opportunities to sing abroad, don't hesitate to ask! (Vera was too humble to include this link herself, but go to for a little snippet of her performance. She's great!)
