Mountain Dulcimer Workshop Saturday, April 11, 2015 Beginning to Intermediate level classes 8:30-5:00 Mountain Dulcimer Concert (Free) Joe Collins,Ben and Becky Seymour Judy House, Flat Mountain Dulcimers Dolce Dulcimers 5:00 pm Queen Street United Methodist Church 500 Queen Street, Kinston N.C. Presented by Waterbound Dulcimers Kinston, NC About the Instructors: Ben Seymour was exposed to a wide variety of music by his older siblings, one of who is Wayne Seymour, nationally-known folk musician and exceptional dulcimer player. Today, Ben performs and enjoys listening to Appalachian, traditional Celtic, and other forms of folk music. Ben also builds lap dulcimers and other instruments at home, teaches the playing of the lap dulcimer, and engineers and produces sound recordings for Gingerthistle and local artists. Ben spent nine years as a volunteer at WNCW (88.7 FM) co-hosting the popular "Celtic Winds" show on Sunday afternoons. Ben's wife, Becky Cleland, learned to harmonize when her

parents sang favorite tunes to pass the time on long trips with the family. Becky comments, I find hanging a harmony onto a tune a most joyful pursuit." kudzupatch.net Joe Collins The 2007 National Mountain Dulcimer Champion, Joe has played dulcimer since the 1970's. He loves working with and performing for people. His eight books of dulcimer tablature grew out of a desire to teach others to play. He is a popular mountain dulcimer clinician at festivals, offering clear instruction supplemented by easy-to-follow instructional material. He is a songwriter, vocalist, and an occasional guitarist. His performances are sprinkled with a lot of humor and some excellent mountain dulcimer playing - sure to bring a smile to audiences of all ages. Joe has worked in Religious Education for most of his professional career and now serves as Associate Professor of Religion at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC Judy House has had an extraordinary variety of opportunities as an educator over the past 40 years, teaching preschool through graduate level classes in North Carolina. Judy began her study of music as the age of 9 when she was introduced to the flute; piano soon followed. She has been playing and performing ever since with everything from marching bands to gospel quartets to dulcimer ensembles! She received her first mountain dulcimer in A graduate of the first class for Teaching the Mountain Dulcimer from Dulcimer U at WCU, she has taught Mountain Dulcimer classes at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem, NC since 2010, has a number of private students, and was added to the Dulcimer U staff in 2014 for the Teaching the Mountain Dulcimer core class. She has also been a presenter at dulcimer festivals in North Carolina for the past 3 years. She enjoys leading the Camel City Strummers in Winston-Salem as well as the Triad Dulcimer Players Nancy Galambush began playing the mountain dulcimer about 18 years ago when her husband, JC Bradshaw, built one for her. Since then she has taken classes from many of the top dulcimer instructors in the country. She continues the tradition of the dulcimer by passing her knowledge on to others, both through teaching at workshops and festivals and by coordinating the Waterbound Dulcimers. She plays in the group Flat Mountain Dulcimers, for which she also dusted off her cello to add it's mellow sound to the group. Nancy also plays with Dolce Dulcimers and is a founding member of Waterbound Dulcimers. Margit Roberson spent many hours enjoying music made by her husband David, but felt that she had no musical abilities. Once a dulcimer was placed in her lap 16 years ago, she found that she has previously undiscovered musical talents. She has now expanded her talents to playing mandolin. Margit has taken classes from top instructors and passes on her mantra of "practice, practice, practice" to her students. Margit is also a member of Waterbound Dulcimers and of Flat Mountain Dulcimers, along with her husband David and Nancy. Barbara Strickland, an elementary school music teacher for over 30 years, has played dulcimer for 15 years. She has attended numerous classes on playing the mountain dulcimer and is always eager to help others learn. While teaching elementary school, she obtained cardboard dulcimers for her students and introduced many children to the musical world through the dulcimer. Barbara plays with and coordinates Duplin Dulcimers in addition to playing with Dolce Dulcimers and Waterbound.

Carolyn Roberts has been playing dulcimer for 9 years and clearly demonstrates what practice can do for your playing skills! She has recently started a beginning dulcimer group at the senior center in Kinston. In addition to playing and teaching, she is very knowledgable in using the computer program Tabledit to write out professional looking tab and in using tablets to coordinate one's tablature so that those big books full of tab can be a thing of the past. Carolyn is a retired art teacher, crafts beautiful dulcimer jewelry and plays with Dolce Dulcimers, Creekside Strummers and Waterbound. (Do not sign up for other classes if you sign up for Beginners.) Which side of the dulcimer is up? How do you tune it? It s easy. You ll be playing tunes in no time. You won t leave without information on how you can continue to play after the workshop. You do not need a musical background or to be able to read music. Call (252) or Nancy (jcng@esn.net) to reserve a loaner dulcimer if needed. Beginner students stay in the same class all day. Nancy Galambush and Margit Roberson Instructors. Advanced Beginners Smooth out your strumming and get that rhythm right! After learning to play easy melodies, students at the advanced beginner level often need some help keeping an even rhythm and feeling comfortable with their strumming. This class covers rhythms used in fiddle tunes, as well as other rhythms used in waltzes or hymns/gospel music. Depending on the needs of the students, this class may also cover other advanced beginner techniques, such as using more than one finger on the left hand, using basic chords and reading basic musical notation. Barbara Strickland Instructor. Fingerpicking Boot Camp. We will look at and practice a few fingerpicking patterns to get our fingers familiar with what they are being asked to do. We will then apply some of these patterns to some familiar tunes including Old Time tunes like Go Tell Aunt Rhody and some Celtic tunes like Southwind. This is for Intermediate players or even for novice players with a go get em attitude. Something can be learned by all attending. Ben Seymour, instructor Noting the Dulcimer with the Greatest of Ease (Advanced) A workshop designed to work on the finer points of noting strings through exercises in chording, playing melody while holding chording positions, and noting fast sequences of notes. NOTE: This is not a class on using a noter. Joe Collins, Instructor.

. Make Your Own Precious Memories! (Intermediate) An ensemble workshop. Come make beautiful music together as we learn multiple parts for the hymn Precious Memories (and maybe a couple other beautiful songs). You will receive several helpful tips for playing in an ensemble and we will begin to apply those tips to play well together during our class! Being in an ensemble and understanding how the different parts relate to each other can actually reinforce your solo playing. Judy House, Instructor CHOOSE TWO AFTERNOON CLASSES, Note: The tablet class can be taken either for Part I alone or for Parts I and II. You may not take Part II without having taken Part I. 1:45 Afternoon Classes Session 1 - Choose 1 Round and a Round (Advanced Beginner) We will play some simple rounds and I ll even show you how you can play along just by playing basic strums if the tab confounds you. After getting comfortable playing the tunes together, we will break into groups and play them in true round fashion (think Frere Jacques or Row, Row, Row Your Boat ) These are great tunes for ensemble play and can be great fun in a club or group setting. Ben Seymour, Instructor Civil War Songs (Intermediate) Learn some of the songs played and sung during the Civil War. Many of us attend Civil War re-enactments or play at Civil War sites. Learn a few tunes to play when visiting these sites. Joe Collins, Instructor Waltz Across the Strings! (Advanced Beginner and Up) An introduction to playing in ¾ time, or Waltz Time. We will start with several strumming techniques for the right hand, then take a look at a couple of well-known songs to change into waltzes and apply the strumming techniques, then finally, learn to play a couple of beautiful waltzes on our dulcimers. Judy House, Instructor Introduction to Playing Bones (Any level) Learn the history of this simple percussion instrument as well as the method for playing it, which involves positioning and moving the hand in just the right way to swing the bones against each other for a good strike, and then working on playing some triplets. After the brief training, we will practice playing bones with live music! "Bones" are available to borrow if you don't have your own! Becky Cleland, Instructor, with Dave Roberson providing the live music. Put Your Tab on Your ipad Tablet! - Part I (any level) Using an app and the camera on your tablet, you will be able to scan your paper tabs. You'll also learn how to download tabs from Internet, how to share tab with each other, and how to find it quickly when needed. Call Carolyn for additional info on what apps need to be downloaded prior to the workshop.

(c) or (h) This class may be continued in Part II if you wish. Carolyn Roberts, Instructor. 3:00 Afternoon classes Session 2 - choose one Hymns of Fanny Crosby (Advanced Beginner and up) Fanny Crosby is probably the most prolific hymn writer in the history of the Christian Church. Her first published hymn appeared when she was eleven, and she continued writing into her nineties, producing more than 8000 hymns. Although blinded early in life, she celebrated her relationship with God. Joe Collins, Instructor Celtic Songs of the Sea (Intermediate level) The Celts have a long association with seafaring and this is a great way to learn some new tunes of that genre. Bring a Capo and your Cap n and Bosun. (I ll have capos for sale if needed) Ben Seymour, Instructor. Top 10 Practice Tips (Beginner and Up) Teachers will always tell you WHAT to practice, but they never tell you HOW to practice! Sign up for this class and learn what to do when you are practicing! You might be surprised at what you should be doing in order to learn to play your music. This applies to all instruments, not just the dulcimer! Become a better musician, faster! Judy House, Instructor Put Your Tab on Your ipad Tablet! Part II You must have attended Part I in order to attend this class. This class will be to go over specific problems you are having, such as rotating music, combining pages, etc. Carolyn will help you with any special problems you are having. Carolyn Roberts, Instructor.
