1 (part 1) regi-stick plus Part 1 Hi everyone. Here we are with a new 'Exploring Regi-Stick' series dedicated, this time, to the Regi-Stick Plus. It was great to meet so many of you at Alvaston Hall recently and, from the number of questions asked about Regi-Stick Plus over the Club Weekend, it s clear that there s a big demand for some song suggestions to go with the new registrations. So, here are a few to get you started, based on the music I enjoy playing using the Regi-Stick Plus. Important: There are always some initial questions that crop up frequently when a new product is introduced and one such question associated with Regi-Stick Plus concerns the Parameter Lock feature. If you follow the instructions that come with your Regi-Stick Plus you ll see that you re advised to set the Parameter Lock if you use a playing mode (e.g. single finger chord etc.) that is different from the default one. The Parameter Lock 'locks' your preferred choice of split point and fingering mode so that everyone can use the new registrations in the style of their choice. If you've mislaid the instructions already (!), you'll find a PDF copy on the stick itself which you can view on any home PC with Adobe Acrobat Reader. There are so many registrations on Regi-Stick Plus that I've taken banks A-J alphabetically from the Registration Menu for this first list plenty to keep you going until next time when we'll look at banks J-Z. Don't forget that these are just my suggestions - and if you find some other songs that you like playing using the Regi-Stick Plus why not share your ideas with other Regi-Stickers on the Yamaha Club forum? Till next time, enjoy your music and happy Regi- Stickin'! DECEMBER 2007 / JANUARY
3 (part 2) regi-stick plus Part 2 Hi everyone. From the overwhelming level of feedback we ve received it seems that our first list of song suggestions has proved to be very useful to many of you so here's part two of our suggested repertoire list using banks J-Z. Bear in mind that these are only suggestions based on the songs that I've enjoyed playing. You might come up with some more - so why not share them with other Regi-Stickers on the Yamaha Club forum? In the next edition, I'll be looking in more detail at the Classical and Theatre Organ registrations and exploring the fantastic Melody Maker section. 5 (part 3) software workshop Hello Regi-Stickers and welcome to the latest in our Exploring Regi-Stick Plus series. I know many of you have been having fun working through our list of suggested song titles over the past couple of issues (if you've missed them, back copies are available from Yamaha Club office). This time we're going to look in a little more detail at some of the unique settings that really transform the Tyros2. Tyros2 includes some great theatre organ and home organ styles and if you use these together with the factory One Touch Settings (OTS) you can achieve some fantastic results. But what if you want to play classical organ or, maybe, theatre organ sounds in a 'true' organ style with no accompaniment style? This is where Regi-Stick Plus really shines. Much classical and theatre organ repertoire doesn't lend itself to playing with a preset accompaniment style, with its inevitable constant beat to which you must keep time. Regi-Stick Plus allows you to add a MIDI bass pedalboard, thus freeing the player to perform beautiful colla voce arrangements without a style backing. We've discussed previously in Yamaha Club magazine how this can be achieved, but here's a quick recap Regi-Stick Plus contains MIDI setup templates and a library of Pedal Bass voices... Regi-Stick Plus contains all the MIDI setup information required to make an additional pedalboard work properly. Load the settings (following the simple instructions on the leaflet included with the stick) and you're ready to go! Importantly, the Regi-Stick Plus also includes a whole bank of new 'Pedal Bass' voices and these are vital to the keyboard's successful performance as an organ - because the standard bass sounds provided for the accompaniment styles simply don't work very well as 'live' pedal voices. Although the great 'MegaVoice' bass sounds work brilliantly as part of a style, reproducing very convincing and authentic acoustic and electric bass guitar lines - when you try to play them yourself from the pedals and you'll get at best a disjointed 'plonky' bass sound, and at worst a selection of pops and pings! With this in mind, we created a library of new bass sounds - along the same lines as those found in traditional electronic and pipe organ pedal voice sections. We also incorporated a smooth pedal sustain element, so your pedal line will not only sound much more professional but it will also be easier to play and create a pleasing effect. When the Pedal Bass voices are installed you can create perfect 'organ' style performances using the Tyros2 with MIDI bass pedals - with an organ registration for the right hand, a different organ accompaniment setting for the left hand, and a bass voice for the pedals. Should you wish to add an optional lower manual to expand your left hand playing range... well, that's possible too. Huge repertoire of music for Classical and Theatre Organ... The Regi-Stick Plus settings for classical and theatre organ are so versatile that you can use them for a huge repertoire - and for this very reason I haven t provided a list of suggested songs for these sections. Classical Organ 1 Classical Organ 2 With the Classical section, I enjoy playing everything from traditional hymns and liturgical music, through Bach cantatas and fugues to typical 'concert organist' repertoire such as Widor s Toccata. If you're looking for inspiration there are a number of very useful simply scored classical organ books available - contact Jan at the Music People ( ) for more information. If you ve been to one of my shows recently you may have heard the 'My Fair Lady' theatre organ selection that I'm enjoying playing at the moment. And there are some great theatre organ classics that use the novelty 12 APRIL / MAY 2008
6 and percussive sounds - Forgotten Dreams, Wedding of the Painted Doll, Nola, and many, many more. A good source of theatre-style repertoire is the 'Organist Entertains' series of books, which include some brilliant arrangements by many of our best-known theatre organ stars. Theatre USA Theatre Soft Theatre Full normal playing technique but the results are well worth it! We've taken the bass pedal sound from the 'pedal play' settings - and transferred it to the 'Left' section of the keyboard (i.e. the section where you normally play chords to control the accompaniment style). This means that you can play the bass line manually in this part of the keyboard and still achieve a full, rich, bass tone. However, because these sounds were intended originally to be played on the pedals - and because the bass notes are so deep - you can't (or mustn t) play chords down there as the effect would be much too muddy and unpleasant. So, if you're playing the bass line with your left hand (single notes only!), and the melody with your right... where do the chords go? Well, the only place to put them is underneath the melody line. In other words, you need to play the chords and melody with your right hand. The overall effect is not quite as effective as you'd get when playing with pedals - but it's pretty close and certainly as near as you could possibly wish for when using the Tyros2 on its own. This playing style works really well with many popular hymns and other sacred repertoire - why not give it a try? No pedalboard? It doesn t matter... What if you don't have a MIDI bass pedalboard? Can you produce a similar effect when playing the Tyros2 alone? Surely it can't be possible... well folks, it is! The Theatre Organ settings on the Regi-Stick Plus are set up in a slightly different way for the 'Auto Bass' version in fact, they've all been specifically re-programmed and rebalanced just for our non-pedal playing friends! When using these settings in 'Pedal Play' mode, the great right-hand sounds are teamed with a beautiful left-hand tibia registration and, of course, the theatre organ pedal bass sound. But when using the 'Auto Bass' settings the left hand and pedal sounds are replaced with Tyros2 s fantastic theatre accompaniment styles; you play a chord and the melody - and Tyros2 fills in the gaps! We've re-voiced and re-mixed the styles to suit the new righthand sounds so that you always get a perfectly balanced result. There are 24 theatre organ settings on Regi-Stick Plus, but Tyros2 has only three theatre organ styles - so we've set everything up so that when you change settings the arrangement in the organ accompaniment changes to suit. And don't forget that you can use any of the registrations with any of the accompaniment settings simply by pushing the [FREEZE] button to 'lock' the instrument s accompaniment section. By mixing and matching in this way, you can create a wide variety of different organ settings - and achieve some very professional results. Brilliant! Playing a Classical Organ style without pedals... When it comes to playing the Classical Organ registrations without pedals things become a little more involved because we don't have any classical organ 'styles' as such. This requires a bit of 'lateral thinking' as, without the pedal bass tone, classical registrations can sound a little thin - and of course the bass line of a piece is absolutely fundamental to the whole thing sounding musically correct. The solution we've given you here requires a little adaptation of your Melody Maker The Melody Maker section is one that many people have asked me about - and it's not only really useful but (thankfully!) very simple to use and to describe. The Melody Maker settings are effectively a set of new One Touch Settings (OTS) - but unlike OTS they aren't tied to a specific style, so you can use them anywhere and at any time you like! Let me give you an example. I really enjoy the 'Organ' styles in the Ballroom section - but I'd love an 'Organ Foxtrot' along the lines of the great Klaus Wunderlich-like Organ Quickstep. Alas, it's not there. But we can achieve something very close using Melody Maker On the Tyros2 s style panel I go the Ballroom category and from page 1 select the 'Slowfox' style. This great style really reproduces a classic dance band sound - and its four One Touch Settings reflect some of the sounds of the dance band orchestra. Let's quickly see what we've got already in the factory OTS - George Shearing in 1, some gorgeous Strings in 2, Trumpets in 3, and Saxophones and Flute in 4. Great - but not a sniff of Klaus anywhere. So... let's go to the Melody Maker and see what we can find. APRIL / MAY
7 1 In the Melody Maker screen, I select 'Euro Organ'. 1 I choose an 'organ' based style (in this case I select the Organ Rumba style from page 2 of the Ballroom style category. The factory OTS gives me four great organ settings for the right hand melody. keyboard workshop 2 Then I press the [EDIT] button under the screen to see the eight Melody Maker settings within the Euro Organ registration bank. 3 Now I can use any of these eight typically European organ registrations - with the Slowfox style accompaniment that I've already chosen - to create a very 'organ' style performance. 4 In addition I can still use the four preset 'orchestral' One Touch Settings that the factory gave me - giving me a total of twelve registrations for the right hand melody that work perfectly well with the style. Using the Melody Maker in this way effectively triples the number of One Touch Settings for any given style. Let's look at another example, this time working the other way round. Coffee Time Quiz - No. 4 by Beverley Coombes Just to ring the changes, can you solve these anagrams? The answers are all musical terms that I'm sure you've all come across in your playing End in odium 2. Clean bait 2 Now I introduce a more 'orchestral' feel to the arrangement by selecting 'Dance Band Days' from the Melody Maker. 3 I press the [EDIT] button again to see the individual registration settings and find that Melody Maker has provided eight great 'band' sounds that I can use with the style in addition to the four 'organ' OTS from the factory. Mixing and matching the on-board styles and OTS with the new sounds from Melody Maker is a great way to introduce a whole new variety and spice to your existing arrangements and I think this section really brings a whole new ease of use to Tyros2 in a 'live play' situation. Why not take the time now to explore Melody Maker for yourself, choosing a style that you already enjoy - but using the new right hand settings from Melody Maker. It really is like having a professional player sitting right by you, giving you new inspiration and transforming your familiar arrangements into something new and exciting. 3. Soccer end 4.
