8 Artist Biographies Ryan Brunkhurst is originally from Hershey, Pa. He earned his bachelor s degree in organ performance under Janette Fishell and is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree under Christopher Young, both at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Currently, he is organist and music director at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Indianapolis, Ind. A native of Lawrence, Kan., Katie Burk is a first-year graduate student in organ performance at IU, where she studies with Christopher Young. Prior to two years of teaching middle and high school choral music in Minneapolis, Minn., she graduated summa cum laude from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., with degrees in organ performance and music education. Burk currently serves as an associate instructor in the music theory department at IU and as a choral scholar at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington, Ind. Jaime Carini, doctoral student in organ performance and literature, studies with Christopher Young. In addition, she serves as organ scholar and assistant conductor at Plainfield United Methodist Church in Plainfield, Ind. Before beginning her doctorate, Carini taught piano and organ at Tulsa Community College and was dean and sub-dean of the Tulsa Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She was selected to receive the 2015 E. Power Biggs Fellowship from the Organ Historical Society and is a member of the 2016 E. Power Biggs Fellowship selection committee. Carini s other notable accomplishments include adjudicating the 2015 Cherine Troxel Organ Scholarship competition, performing the U.S. debut of selections from Naji Hakim s The Apostles for organ duo, and collaborating with the Joffrey Workshop Texas in San Antonio, Texas, and the Mark Morris Dance Group from Brooklyn, N.Y. Diana Chou is pursuing a master s degree in organ performance at the IU Jacobs School of Music. Originally from Fort Dodge, Iowa, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Amherst College, where she double-majored in mathematics and music. She currently studies under Christopher Young; previous instructors include Larry Schipull of Mount Holyoke College, David Moklebust, and Ruth Johnson. Carolyn Craig, of Knoxville, Tenn., is a sophomore and Wells Scholar at Indiana University, where she is majoring in organ performance under Christovpher Young and minoring in German. In 2013, Craig won the Region IV Quimby Competition for Young Organists and performed as a Rising Star at the National American Guild of Organists Convention in Boston in As a pianist, her distinctions include performing in Carnegie Hall as a winner of the American Protégé International Talent Competition. She serves as undergraduate organ scholar at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington, Ind., under Marilyn Keiser. Dalong Ding is a master s student at Indiana University, studying with Janette Fishell. From Shanghai, China, Ding earned a bachelor s degree from Shanghai Conservatory and a master s degree in piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music. Previous organ instructors include Katherine Meloan and McNeil Robinson.

9 Lucas Fletcher is a second-year M.M. student in the studio of Christopher Young. A native of Alton, Ill., Fletcher studied music at Illinois Wesleyan University. In addition to the organ, Fletcher has also studied piano, cello, and trumpet. He currently serves as director of music at St. Paul s Episcopal Church in Columbus, Ind. Janette Fishell is professor of organ and chair of the Organ Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. In addition, she is organist/choirmaster at The Episcopal Church of All Saints, Indianapolis. A graduate of Indiana University and Northwestern University, she is active as a recitalist and teacher throughout the United States and abroad. Named Young Organist of the Year by Keyboard Arts while an IU undergraduate, she also holds the 2012 Oswald Ragatz Distinguished Organist Alumni Award, presented by her IU alumni peers, and the 2014 Paul Creston Award, presented at St. Malachy s ( The Actor s Chapel ), New York City. The Creston Award is an honor presented annually to a distinguished artist who embodies the Creston Creed, excellence in the arts, and is a significant figure in church music and the performing arts. Matthew Gerhardt is in the second year of his M.M. degree at IU in the studio of Janette Fishell. He earned his undergraduate degree in church music from Concordia University Wisconsin, where he studied with John Behnke. Gerhardt spent a year at the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik in Herford, Germany, where he studied with Stefan Kagl and received a score of 1,0 (Excellent) on his M.A.-level Organ Performance Exam. Currently, he serves as interim assistant organist at St. Paul s Episcopal Church in Indianapolis, Ind. Jinhee Kim, a student of Christopher Young, is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in organ at Indiana University. She was a winner of the San Marino/Elizabeth Elftman Organ Competition in 2010 and a finalist in the Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition in She won the first American round of the Mikael Tariverdiev International Organ Competition in Kim serves as music director and organist at First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville, Ind. Chere Ko is a doctoral student at Indiana University, studying with Janette Fishell. Ko was born in Hong Kong and educated in the U.K., earning degrees from the University of Manchester and Royal Northern College of Music. She was the third-prize winner in the John R. Rodland Memorial Competition. She now serves as the organist at Centenary United Methodist Church, Lebanon, Ind. Nara Lee is pursuing a master s degree in organ and sacred music at the IU Jacobs School of Music. He is currently in the studio of Janette Fishell. He earned his bachelor s degree in church music at Seoul Theological University, South Korea. His previous instructors were Hae-kyung Kim, Kum-ok Baek, and Jisung Kim. Leah Martin studies organ primarily with Janette Fishell. She is a Jacobs Scholar as well as an Indiana University Founders Scholar. She has performed several times at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia as well as on the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ in Philadelphia. Before college, her main practice venue was the Bryn Athyn Cathedral in Bryn Athyn, Penn., where she is still a regular assistant organist during summers.

10 John Nothaft, a senior at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, studies organ performance with Janette Fishell. Originally from Vienna, Va., he has recently attended the McGill Summer Organ Academy, participated in a master class with David Higgs at the American Guild of Organists regional convention in Indianapolis, and performed a post-compline organ recital at St. Mark s Cathedral in Seattle, Wash. Nothaft is a member of the Hutton Honors College at IU. Currently, he is the music coordinator at Faith Lutheran Church in Avon, Ind. Nikolai Peek is a graduate student at the Jacobs School of Music, pursuing a Master of Music in Organ Performance and Sacred Music under Janette Fishell. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music with concentrations in Organ Performance and Piano Performance from Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga. He studied organ with James F. Mellichamp while at Piedmont College. Peek has served as a church organist from the age of 17 and currently is the organist at Speedway Christian Church in Indianapolis, Ind. Mike Powell is a doctoral student in organ performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He earned his Master of Music in Organ Performance and Sacred Music from IU in 2014 and his Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from St. Olaf College in Powell is organist at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Bloomington, Ind., and an associate of the American Guild of Organists. Nicholas Quardokus is currently in his final year of undergraduate studies at the Jacobs School of Music, studying organ with Janette Fishell. He is a recipient of the Barbara and David Jacobs Scholarship. Quardokus has received first prize in the Albert Schweitzer Organ Competition in 2014 and the AGO Region V RCYO/Quimby competition in He has presented recitals throughout the country. As a sacred musician, he serves as assistant organist at Trinity Episcopal Church, Indianapolis, Ind. A professor emeritus of music at the University of Evansville (UE), Douglas Reed is adjunct professor of organ at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music ( ). He continues an active teaching and performance career. He received a Global Scholar Grant and the Sadelle and Sydney Berger Award for Scholarship and Creative Activity from UE. He has recorded William Albright s Four Fancies for Harpsichord on the Eastman School of Music s American Music Series and William Albright In Memoriam on the C. B. Fisk Organ, Op. 110, Minato Mirai Hall, Yokohama, and Albright s early organ works at the University of Michigan (available from itunes). Reed s chapter North American Organ Music after 1800 appears in The Cambridge Companion to the Organ. Nicole Simental is a doctoral student in organ performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she studies with Christopher Young and is an associate instructor of piano. She earned degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Wheaton College, where she studied with Craig Cramer and Edward Zimmerman. She currently serves as assistant music director at First Christian Church and accompanist at St. Paul Catholic Church in Bloomington, Ind. In 2015, she was selected as a semifinalist for the National Young Artist s Competition in Organ Performance.

11 Brent te Velde is a doctoral student at Indiana University, studying with Christopher Young. A native of Stillwater, Okla., he earned a master s degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and a master s degree from Yale University. His major organ teachers have been Martin Jean, David Heller, Christoph Grohmann, Hans Davidsson, and Rebecca te Velde. He has earned first prizes in the John R. Rodland Memorial Competition, American Guild of Organists Region VII Young Organists competition, and William Hall competition in San Antonio. He has served churches in Oklahoma, Texas, Connecticut, and Indiana. Peter Rogahn enjoys a career as an organist, pianist, choral director, and teacher. Currently, he is pursuing a Doctor of Music in Organ Performance and Literature degree at Indiana University. He serves as precentor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Indianapolis. Rogahn earned a Performer Diploma and a Master of Music degree from IU and a Bachelor of Music degree from Concordia College. His principal teachers include Christopher Young, Peter Nygaard, and Harold Rutz. Charles Webb served as dean of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music from 1973 to During that time, the Jacobs School was named number one in quality out of 600 accredited university or college schools of music in three independent surveys. He has been organist and/or choirmaster of First United Methodist Church in Bloomington, Ind., for 57 years. He gives organ recitals throughout the United States and has appeared on the concert series of the Riverside Church in New York City, Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas, and Clairmont University in California, among many others. He has served on the board of advisors of the American Guild of Organists and recently published a volume of 100 descants and free harmonizations for hymns of all faiths. Robert Welch has been studying music for 14 years, beginning with the violin and continuing on to piano and organ. He received his B.S. in Sacred Music and Organ at the University of Indianapolis, under the tutelage of Marko Petričić. Welch is currently enrolled as a first-year M.M. student studying organ and sacred music at Indiana University with Christopher Young. Christopher Young has been at the Jacobs School of Music for nearly 25 years, teaching applied organ and graduate organ literature history courses. A native of New England, Young was the winner of the 1988 National Young Artists Competition of The American Guild of Organists (AGO) as well as of the 1988 Arthur Poister Competition. He has been a featured artist at national and regional conventions of the AGO, presented workshops and lectures at church music and pedagogy conferences, and has been heard on Minnesota Public Radio s Pipedreams. Young enjoys serving as organist of First Presbyterian Church, Bloomington, Ind., and performing violin and organ duets with his wife, fellow Jacobs faculty member Brenda Brenner.
