Read m to a partner. What does having a bee in your bonnet mean? Write down one thing that applies to you. Draw and label a real beehive, as well as a man made bee box. Collect pictures of all insect names you know. Can you find a way to group m? Make a pictograph of instruments you know are in same family of instruments, eg violin, viola. What shape are cells in honeycomb? How many sides does each cell have? Can you draw one? Display labelled insect pictures on wall. Write or perform a short play which includes line You have a bee in your bonnet! Visit a bee farm, or watch a video about an orchestra, or listen to an apiarist tell his story. Mime Bumble s attempt to land on a flower. Choose three insects which have three distinct sounds, and ask your class to guess which insect it applies to. Act out runny honey dripping from your sandwich. Clap a rhythm to words such as: bumble bee, pollinate, buzzing, Proboscis, insect, beehive. What does orchestra mean? Write a list of all instruments you think are in an orchestra. Find out four main families of instruments in an orchestra. Write m down. Discuss and re enact with a friend, a skill you learnt from practicing a lot, ie tying shoelaces or hitting a tennis ball. With a partner, discuss a time when you could not succeed at something you really wanted to be able to do. Listen to music, and clap along to beat as well as you can. What words would you use to describe music? Write a diary of any activities you have done since reading book. If you were queen bee, what would you have said to Bumble? Record answers on board under headings of Positive, Negative, Interesting. Talk to your group or class about why you would NOT like to be an Apiarist. definition of an insect? Find out how many native Australian bees re are, and any or interesting facts about m. Draw and label main body parts of an insect.

Do same with Differences. Describe what would happen if everyone in orchestra played melody however y wanted to. Collect four different sized honey containers, and line up in order of weight. Label each with its weight. Do you know which one cost most, and least? How many flowers can a honey bee visit in one day? How much honey can she collect in her whole life? Using Positive, Negative, Interesting format, discuss and record your ideas about eating honey in preference to jam. Design a mobile of eir musical instruments or bees, which shows how y work. Compose a new bee dance to tell or bees where flowers are. Cook a recipe which uses honey as a key ingredient. Develop a four line Rap sequence, beginning with words, I am a worker bee, and perform for your group or class. Have a look at part of score from Bumblebee music, and discuss how notation reflects tempo of melody. Find out why bees are so important to our life on Earth. Tell a partner your conclusions. How can bees be a health hazard to humans? How can humans be a health hazard to bees? Listen to music with your eyes closed. Discuss with your class, images that come to mind. If you were a bumble bee annoyed by a human, would you choose to sting and die, or fly away and live? Is a bumble bee a honey bee? difference? special about Ligurian bees on Kangaroo Island in South Australia? Creating Write a story about how Rimsky-Korsakov came to write music, Flight of Bumblebee. Create an illustrated poster of number facts related to bees. Create some antennae for yourself to wear, or create a new design in bee slippers, to collect pollen. Develop a skit around line, fright of fumble bee, from story. Perform it for your class. Choose anor creature, and develop a simple musical score which reflects creature s movement or sound. Find out what a beeline and honeyguide is, and create some new ones of your own. Listen to or music played by an orchestra and talk about how y are different to Bumblebee. Create an illustrated poster of bee facts.

4 THE THINKER S KEYS Make a list of things you would never see on a bee s body. What if we all had a stinging hook like some bees do, in our little finger? What are some of disadvantages of playing violin? List attributes of woodwind instruments. Do an A-Z of all music words you know. Use BAR format to design a drum or flute. (Bigger, Add, Remove or Replace) How many ways can you think of to make a buzzing sound? Paint, draw or create a collage of Flight of Bumblebee. What would be consequences of no more bees in our country? Make a list of or uses for conductor s baton.

5 What would happen if we all had to fly everywhere? What do bees, wasps and ants all have in common? The answer is Bee. What are 5 questions that could have this answer? List all of flower names that you know. Invent a new way to collect honey from a beehive. What would happen if we had a proboscis to eat with? What makes people give up trying to succeed at a new skill? Design a machine to take honey from hive without having to dress in protective clos. conductor s role in orchestra? Could anyone do that job? What do you think would have happened to Bumble if he had never learned to fly properly?
