2 Tone Warmups 9 3. High Register Pure Tone Remember when returning to lower notes, to insure your embouchure is spread rom side to side, with less covering o the blow hole. For upper notes, slide lip centers orward. Use air speed, rom the lungs with an open throat to sing the upper note with a ringing sound. Ater low and middle register longtones, return to creating a beautiul, clear, ringing B-natural in the upper octave. Discover the embouchure you need or clarity o tone. Slurring up an octave is a combination o lips and air speed. Use this clear, ringing B to start high longtones with a pure starting pitch. I you're playing high longtones or the irst time, add only one or two new ones per day. I ever the tone becomes imperect, on any note, return to B-natural, and walk upward, slowly again, closing your eyes, and listening and sensing the "sweet spot" or pure tone. 14 m Example o stopping point or irst day m m m First week m m m m

4 Tone Warmups 11 Four in a Row, High Register 16 Listen closely to the tone quality I any note sounds unclear, you can slow down and match only two notes in tone quality. For example, does your F, F# and high G all sound identical in tone quality? How to improve any wayward note 17 Playing irst orward and then backward, decide i the F# needs more air speed, or a more similar embouchure to G and F. Hint: F# in the high register, is one o the ew notes that malunctions i you have the B-lat thumb key on. So use the B-natural thumb key whenever approaching a high F#. Then return to where last you were playing your note groups and re-check or uniormity o tone. copyright

10 Tone Warmups 17 Hint: Only play as high as you can with perectly beautiul tone. Fatigue is to be avoided. Sensitivity o the lips and air column are built day by day rom the lowest notes o the lute. Take weeks or months to gradually build up to more serene high register tone quality. Your embouchure will develop its high register relaxedness rom skills you've built through the daily practise o the two lower octaves. Spend time in the low register to build the high register. copyright
