Studējis Vīnes Mūzikas un izpildītājmākslas universitātē (prof. U. Lajovičs), piedalījies diriģēšanas meistarklasēs pie L. Kēlera, P. Burina, J. Simonova, Ž. Nēģa. Bijis diriģenta Karela Marka Šišona asistents Rīgā un 2012./2013. gada sezonā Zārbrikenes Kaizerslauternes SWR Vācu radio filharmoniskajā orķestrī. Divas sezonas strādājis Latvijas Nacionālajā operā, kur diriģējis izrādes Lučija di Lammermūra, Bohēma, Mazais skursteņslauķis, kā arī bijis iestudējuma Figaro kāzas muzikālais vadītājs. 12 The Orchestra RIGA is the official orchestra of the Riga City Council. It was founded in The orchestra is awarded with the Culture Prize Kilograms kultūras of the Latvian TV for the 40th Anniversary Gala Concert Music for Inspiration on September 6, Since 2010 the Orchestra RIGA organizes the Spring Festival WINDSTREAM that is received with great enthusiasm by the audiences of Riga. The 1st International Composers Competition WINDSTREAM 2014 took place in frames of the Spring Festival WINDSTREAM it was an event of the year of Riga as the European Capital of Culture. During the last several years the Orchestra RIGA has encouraged and facilitated creation of new pieces by the contemporary Latvian composers: Ēriks Ešenvalds cantata Latvia. Impressions of Seasons (2008), Nic Gotham Every Day (2010), Vilnis Šmīdbergs Symphony (2010), Andris Dzenītis Drone (2010), Ilona Breģe Requiem (2010), Imants Mežaraups cantata For the Taken Away (2011), Nic Gotham & Kārlis Auzāns Ode to Gagarin (2012), Vilnis Šmīdbergs Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra (2013), Uģis Prauliņš Phantasy (2013), Rihards Zaļupe Palatine Celebration (2014), Linda Leimane Art Deco (2015), Jackin Pouson Leaves Upon The Wind (2015), Santa Bušs Thoughts, My Thoughts (2015), Jēkabs Nīmanis People of the Future (2015), Platons Buravickis Tāda es esmu (2015) and others. Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Valdis Butāns has recently elected and season 2015/2016 is his first season with Orchestra RIGA. He graduated from the Department of Orchestral Conducting at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music with MA degree. In 2005/2006 he improved his orchestral conducting skills at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts (Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien) with Prof. Uroš Lajovic. He has participated in master classes with Lutz Köhler, Per Borin, Juozas Domarkas, Yuri Simonov and Zsolt Nagy. Since 2010 Valdis Butāns was the assistant of conductor Karel Mark Chichon at the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, and for the 2012/2013 season also at the German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrucken-Kaiserslautern. Two seasons he has worked at the Latvian National Opera, conducting opera performances Lucia di Lammermoor, La Boheme, A Little Sweep and Le nozze di Figaro.
