5 Individual Lessons Private instruction is one of the most popular and important things we offer at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Regardless of your age, level, musical style or preferred instrument, we can find you a teacher that meets your needs. With approximately 140 active faculty members, the VCM will have you making music in no time! How it works The first step to beginning your individual lessons at the VCM is to tell us a bit about yourself and your musical goals. Please fill out a Referral Form with some basic information such as contact details, availability, musical experience and the instrument you are hoping to study. This will help us to match you with the teacher who is best suited to your individual needs. Your new teacher will contact you to arrange a short interview or trial lesson, and then you ll be on your way! You can phone , download a pdf online, or complete the Referral Form on page 55. Tuition Individual lessons fall into four Fee Groups, ranging from $47 to $73 per hour depending on the instructor. However, in consultation with your teacher, you may register for as many, or as few, lessons as you wish. While our academic terms begin in September and late January respectively, you may begin lessons at any time throughout the year. Lessons are also available throughout the summer. Contact us and we ll do our best to accommodate your request. Group Classes Participating in group classes at the VCM is a great way to gain musical experience in a fun and supportive environment. Our group classes offer students a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends, play great music and learn from amazing instructors! Previously, she was an instructor in the Music Education faculty at the University of British Columbia, as well as in the Music Therapy program at Capilano College. Johanne is the former President of the Canadian Association of Music Therapy and has served on the Scientific Committee for the World Federation of Music Therapy and Music/Medicine. The Orff program is based on the philosophy that the gift for sound, rhythm, movement, problem-solving and creative expression is innate in each individual, and that each child is capable of artistic expression, reasoning, learning, and creating. It is a child-centered approach where music-making is experiential, non-competitive and performed in an atmosphere of fun, joy and discovery. Orff classes embrace all facets of creative music education through speech, poems, body percussion, dance and creative movement, instrumental play, improvisation and composition. Reading of simple rhythmic notation will be introduced in the 5-7 year old class and instruction on soprano recorder will begin in the 7-9 year old class. 11 Adult Continuing Education Have you always wanted to try an instrument but didn t know where to start? Or do you want pick up where you left off and remind yourself of what it s like to have music in your life again? The VCM offers several courses for adults of any age and any level, whether you re an absolute beginner or you know a bit about music already. Try your hand at music in a non-intimidating, fun environment at the VCM! Adult Beginner Classes Please bring an instrument to the first class, where applicable. Play Piano Today Have you envied people who can sit down and play their favourite songs? Perhaps you ve taken lessons but have been unable to play without hours of practice and the music in front of you, and now you can t remember anything? Linda Gould s innovative method will have you playing the piano in just 10 weeks even if you ve never played before using a chordal approach. We learn to read simple fake book notation and add appropriate left hand accompaniments to several styles of music, while learning to also play by ear. It is one of the most rewarding ways to make music. Working together with other musicians is a great way to improve your overall musicianship and play some of the great works written for small ensembles. Whether you have a pre-formed group or are interested in finding other players of similar ability and interest, we can help. 13 Adult Intermediate & Advanced Classes When you d like to take your musical skills to new levels, we have something for you! znew! Fantasias and Canzonas A class for recorders and strings (violin, viola, cello, viol) that explores the development of 17th century English polyphony. The music of Morely, Simpson, Lawes, Jenkins, and Purcell will be studied. While the music is not technically difficult, sight reading ability and working knowledge of C, G, F, D, and B-flat scales is required. Instructor: Stacey Boal Duration: 6 weeks Tuition: $120 CE Mon 3:00-4:00pm Oct 3 - Nov 14 znew! Trio Sonatas A class for recorders, flutes, oboes, violins and cellos. The music of Telemann and Corelli will be the vehicle for exploring the particular challenges (and rewards!) of combining winds and strings. Modern pitch will be used (A=440). For string players, a Baroque bow is an asset but not required. Our students come from all music disciplines and genres; classical, folk, rock, pop, hip hop, country, R&B, and just about anything else. They learn instrument skills, language, improvisation, composition, history, ear-training, and ensemble skills. 19 Keyboard Piano, Jazz Piano, Pipe Organ, Harpsichord & Classical Accordion The VCM keyboard department offers lessons to suit all ages, interests, and learning styles. Most students register for one-on-one studio lessons, but the Conservatory also offers a wide variety of group instruction for both children and adults. Group instruction is often a good choice for the beginner or elementary-level student. For children, select from Kelly Kirby, Suzuki or special classes for various ages. Adults may choose from classical or popular-based instruction, for students at all levels. A specific teacher may be requested; otherwise the Department Head will recommend a teacher based on matching the student s needs with a particular faculty member s expertise. Music reading is taught when the ear is sufficiently developed and the piano technique is secure. Parental involvement is required. The parent attends each lesson with the student, assists in daily practice, and plays the Suzuki CD at home. With the teacher s guidance, the parent learns how to help the child with the weekly assignments. Although designed for preschool beginners, the Suzuki Method can be successful at any age. 23 Strings & Guitar The String Department of the VCM has instruction and programming for students of all abilities. The Conservatory has a rich resource of dedicated faculty in the disciplines of violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar (classical, steel string and electric), harp, historical instruments and folk fiddling. We offer comprehensive programming for those who wish to pursue music in a variety of in-depth settings. In addition to high-level private instruction and introductory group classes, three levels of string orchestra ensure a place for students of every level. We also arrange chamber music opportunities for students of similar ability levels. These four aspects of instruction, when combined with our many performance opportunities as well as additional VCM classes, allow students of any age the well-rounded and enriching experiences that studying on a string instrument can offer. (British Columbia) Michael van der Sloot began his musical studies with one of Canada s foremost string teachers, his brother William van der Sloot. He later received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in viola at UBC, studying with Gerald Stanick, with Post-Graduate studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria with Thomas Riebl. Michael has played with most of the symphonies in Western Canada. His performances have taken him throughout Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland and Italy. Beginners learn to play by ear, by listening and imitation. 27 Theory and Composition The understanding and creation of music begins with music theory. Theory is the language of music an essential part of musical training. The Conservatory offers individual and shared lessons, as well as group classes, for all levels of music theory, music history and composition. Taking classes in Theory and Composition provides an ideal foundation for all students of music. THEORY AND COMPOSITION Department Head: Stephen Brown ARCT Composition; ARCT Theory Stephen Brown is an accomplished composer, conductor, and teacher. He joined the VCM in 1992 and, in addition to his duties as Head of Theory and Composition, has served as Director for several VCM Festivals, including the 2010 Bach & Company Festival and the 2009 Mozart-Haydn Festival. He is the Artistic Director of the Sidney Orchestra, and a theory syllabus and examination designer for the VCM. 29 Sound Advice Theory & Ear-Training Classes Our Rudiments and Introductory Harmony classes are based on the Sound Advice Theory & Ear-Training Series. Each level incorporates theory, ear-training, sight-reading, sight-singing, improvisation and composition. While Sound Advice students are prepared for the theory and ear-training requirements of the Royal Conservatory of Music examinations, the primary reason for students to take Sound Advice is to develop deeper understanding and enjoyment of music. Sound Advice can be taken to enrich or to prepare students for instrumental studies. It is recommended that students continue to study at the corresponding grade level. 35 Opera Studio After a successful re-launch in that saw high-quality productions of excerpts from The Marriage of Figaro and operas based on the works of Shakespeare, the season promises to be hugely rewarding for participants and audiences alike. 42 Music Therapy Music Therapy is the skilful use of music as a therapeutic tool to restore, maintain, and improve mental, physical, and emotional health. The nonverbal, creative, and affective nature of music facilitates contact, learning, self-expression, communication and growth. The VCM s Music Therapy sessions meet the needs of children as young as 18 months to the elderly, those of all ages with exceptionalities, conditions or illnesses, and improves the quality of life for all. Music Therapy sessions may take place in the VCM Music Therapy studios or in such facilities as hospitals, group homes, long-term care and independent living facilities, hospice, geriatric care facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation centres, and schools. Music has such a strong presence in everyone s lives. No wonder that using music as therapy can have such a powerful impact. Music facilitates expression and learning, instils respect and pride, provides wellness, gives courage, and offers pure abandon. It is indeed a little bit like magic. In this section learn more about what the VCM is doing to provide students with an enriching, engaging and inspiring educational experience. There truly is no musical community like the VCM on Vancouver Island! Participating in ensembles at the VCM is a great way to gain musical experience in a fun and supportive environment. Our groups offer students wonderful opportunities to meet new friends, play great music and learn from amazing instructors! Orchestras, ensembles and choirs offer students a chance to participate in concerts and collaborate with other musicians. The VCM ensembles include choirs and a wide variety of instrumental ensembles for performers of all levels. Participants rehearse weekly and take part in at least two concerts annually. To ensure continuity of repertoire and rehearsal, students are encouraged to register for the entire year (two terms). 48 THE VCM ADVANTAGE Perhaps my favourite part about being a student in the Collegium Program was noticing how enjoyable it is to be part of a community full of caring, devoted, interesting people who were so much fun to be around. Student Nurturing a Community of Gifted Young Musicians Founded in January 2006, the Collegium provides an enriched curriculum to talented, motivated, teenage classical musicians. The Collegium is a lively community of young musicians who are prepared to devote the time necessary to develop their musical talents and abilities. There are three categories of Collegium membership all are open to singers, pianists and other instrumentalists. Students audition for the Collegium, and if accepted, are placed in the appropriate category for their age and performance level. In every category, Collegium membership is open to all qualified students, whether or not they are studying with VCM faculty. Teachers are invited to encourage their students to audition for the Collegium. When a student is accepted, the Collegium and the studio teacher collaborate to provide an enriched program addressing the student s individual needs. New and continuing Collegium students are chosen annually by auditions held in May, and again in December if spaces are available. Tuition Fees The cost of instruction in the Collegium Program is much higher than the fees listed below. For example, the actual cost for each full member of the Collegium is about $1,900 per term. Fees for Associate and Junior members are also subsidized. The Victoria Conservatory of Music is committed to making this special program available to students who can benefit from it the most. To do that, we offset the true cost of Collegium study in the case of full members by over 50% through donations from private donors, foundations, corporations, and financial support from the VCM itself. 49 Full Members Full members are students between the ages of approximately 13 and 18 who have reached a level of notable proficiency on their instrument: generally Grade 9 or above. Full members participate in a busy schedule of masterclasses, coachings, seminars, performances, and residencies by distinguished guest artists. Tuition: Full membership $1,080 per term Every Collegium student on full membership receives a scholarship of $180 per term, resulting in a net tuition of $900 per term, which includes: 16 one-hour studio lessons per term with the student s current teacher Weekly chamber music rehearsals and coaching Regular masterclasses with local and visiting musicians Soundings: occasional seminars led by invited guests where any and all aspects of music are discussed Performance opportunities at the VCM and elsewhere Credit of $100 per term towards theory, history or composition instruction taken at the Conservatory. Services of an accompanist during masterclasses when required; string players and singers pay an additional fee of $80 per term and receive a scheduled 30 minute session with their assigned accompanist once every two weeks. Associate Members Associate members are students who, though they may be performing at an advanced level, cannot commit to the time required for full membership. Associates generally participate only in the chamber music component of the Collegium. The fee paid by Associate members covers a portion of the cost of their chamber music instruction. Associate members are welcome and encouraged to attend all regular Collegium activities as auditors and occasional participants. Tuition: Associate Membership $300 per term Junior Members Junior members are those students who show promise and dedication, but who are not yet at an age or performance level that qualifies them for either Full or Associate membership. 51 Performance Venues The VCM is home to three fine performance venues, and proudly presents diverse and vibrant musical performances ranging from classical to popular, early music to the avant garde, and many other artistic events that the whole community can enjoy. Alix Goolden Performance Hall The main concert venue at the VCM is Alix Goolden Performance Hall, named in honour of a woman who contributed a tremendous amount to the dream of a music conservatory in Victoria. This 800-seat hall features a vaulted ceiling, filigree iron railings, carved wooden pews, and intricate stained glass windows. It has earned a reputation among local music lovers for its fine acoustics and simple elegance. The Alix Goolden Performance Hall plays host to many acclaimed international, local and student performers. Robin and Winifred Wood Recital Hall A more intimate ambience is found in the smaller 100-seat Robin and Winifred Wood Recital Hall, which provides space for small-scale music performances, solo recitals, lectures, and rehearsals. This charming space features zig-zag walls and stained glass windows. The hall is dedicated in honour of the continuing work of Vice-Principal Emerita Winifred Scott Wood, who has made an outstanding musical contribution to the VCM and the Victoria community. Metro Studio The Metro Studio is a black-box style theatre equipped for plays, dance, cinema, live music, meetings, rehearsals and receptions. 53 Getting Started Administrative Fees Registration Fee Each school year, all students are required to pay a registration fee. These fees are due at the time of registration and are applicable once per academic year. Students enrolled in private lessons, plus any additional classes and/or ensembles: $50 Each additional family member: $10 Group Class registrations: $25 (including Children s Music, Adult Learners Classes, and Theory) Ensembles: $25 Enrolments where tuition is less than $250: $25 Summer Academies: Non-VCM Students: $35 VCM Students (enrolled in current year): $25 Registration fees are waived for Music Therapy clients. Course Resource Fee & Music Rental Fee Students are responsible for additional costs for music and books. For some courses, a course resource fee is due at the time of registration, which covers the cost of handouts, music or supplies provided by the instructor. For other courses such as ensembles, choirs, and orchestras, a music rental fee is due at registration. These fees are included in the class descriptions throughout the Community Calendar. Course Selection If you or your child plans to register for individual lessons for the first time, you may pay for an individual lesson with no obligation to register for more classes. Trial lessons may be rescheduled once with 24 hours notice. In order to receive a refund, trial lessons must be cancelled with 24 hours notice. Prospective students may also audit one group class session per semester before committing to the remaining classes. Individual Lessons Students typically have one lesson per week for 36 weeks (two terms) from September to June (unless alternate arrangements are made directly with the instructor). Students may begin individual lessons at any time during the academic year. Students will be referred to an appropriate instructor based on musical background, goals, availability of lessons, and fee options. Students can inquire about lessons with a specific instructor, though the VCM cannot guarantee placement. Once an instructor is assigned, the instructor will contact the student/parent to make arrangements for lessons. These group experiences add to the richness of music education through sharing it with others and participating is really just plain fun! Most group classes are full-year courses that run for 32 or 34 weeks (two terms) from September to May. Children s Music Classes follow a 38-week calendar from September to June. Adult Continuing Education classes follow the same terms as other group classes, but are often broken out into shorter modules. Students in group classes typically begin their studies in September. Classes fill up quickly please register no later than one week prior to the start date. If space permits and if the instructor agrees, a student may join a class already in progress. Some courses may require an application, interview, placement test, or audition as indicated in this course calendar. Fees, duration, and timetables for group classes are included with each class description. Credit Card Policy As of September 2010, the VCM no longer accepts credit card payments for individual lesson tuition. VCM Scholarships Scholarships are awarded based on a variety of guidelines as specified by the donor. Some of these criteria may be VCM examination results, diploma program auditions, or recommendations of the Artistic Directorate and instructors. No formal application is required candidates will be selected based on merit, demonstrated musical talent, effort and achievement. 58 ONCE YOU RE HERE Examinations Victoria Conservatory of Music exams are based on the VCM Syllabus of each department, and may be taken by both internal* and external students. Exams are optional for Community School students. *Internal students must have accounts in good standing New for Changes to the VCM Exam System Beginning with the June 2011 VCM examination session, we are making some changes to our exam requirements and co-requisites. Theoretical examinations taken via the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) are now directly transferrable to completing your VCM requirements. After June 2011, VCM theoretical examinations will be offered only in Grades 1 through 4. For those students studying theory at the Conservatory, the exam will be given during the last class session. The VCM will continue to offer instruction in all theoretical subjects (rudiments, harmony, counterpoint, history) and the curriculum will be as required by the RCM. New musicianship requirements for VCM exams are under development and will be published at the beginning of the academic year. There will now be no restriction on the number of irregular list selections, as long as the exam program in total is approved by the appropriate Department Head at the time of application. For further information regarding theoretical or musicianship requirements, please contact: Stephen Brown, Theory and Composition Department Head , ext The primary VCM examination period is in June of each year.* Students wishing to take exams must apply and pay the exam fees by March 15. Late applicants will be charged a $10 late fee and no applications will be received after March 31. Exam application forms can be picked up at the VCM office about a month before the application deadline. Applications must be completed in full (including the instructor s signature) and returned to the VCM office with full payment by the registration deadline. Exam fees are not included in course fees (with the exception of Theory Grades 1 to 4). Exam schedules will be available in mid-may for the May-June session. Students are responsible for confirming their exam time with their instructor(s). Exam results are mailed in mid-july. Assessments are also available, at the instructor s discretion, as an alternative to graded examinations. No mark is assigned, however the candidate still receives a detailed examiner s adjudication. *Practical examinations may be taken at any time of the year. Three months notice is required, i.e. a candidate may complete an exam registration at the beginning of November for an exam to take place in February. 59 Refunds for Cancelled Exams or Assessments Refunds for cancelled exams or assessments may be issued at the discretion of the Registrar up to May 1. A cancellation charge of $15 will be deducted from the refund amount. No refunds will be issued after May 1. Non-VCM Exams Students may prepare for exams of the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto), which are regularly conducted in Victoria. Students are responsible for advising the instructor at the beginning of the year of their intent to take RCM exams to ensure proper preparation. It is the student s responsibility to apply to RCM Examinations by the appropriate deadlines. It may also be possible for students to prepare for exams from other institutions. Please discuss with the instructor well in advance. High School Credits for Music Students seeking high school credits for music exams should consult with their school guidance counsellor for further details. 62 The Fine Print Did you know? We keep fees low so that as many people as possible can share the experience of music. 55% of the VCM s annual funding is generated by tuition fees. We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of individual donors, grants, corporate gifts and sponsorship for 45% of our funding. Tuition Tuition and other fees must be paid before a student is admitted to a lesson, class or ensemble. Payment may be made by phone, mail or in person. Cheque, debit card, money orders or cash are accepted. Cheques should be made payable to the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Pre-Authorized Debit Payment Option The VCM now accepts payment via Electronic Fund Transfer. Simply fill out the form (available from the VCM administration office) and your payments will be automatically debited from your bank account. This includes vacations, school/sport events, etc. If an instructor cancels, the instructor is obliged to make up the lesson. The VCM reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes and to limit registration or change instructors. Should insufficient registration cause the cancellation of a class, fees will be refunded or the student may transfer to another course if room is available. 62

63 Refunds & Withdrawals Individual Lessons Because instructors must commit to a schedule and book a studio space, refunds for individual lessons are permitted only in cases of illness or injury (for which a Doctor s note is required) or in exceptional circumstances, such as an unexpected family relocation. All withdrawal requests must be submitted in writing or by to the Registrar s office. Withdrawal requests must be made in a timely fashion and within the term to which they apply. Requests for retroactive refunds received more than one month after the cessation of attendance at lessons will not be considered. Refunds will be processed according to the following schedule and are subject to a $25 processing fee: One week before the first lesson 100% During the first two weeks 75% During the third week 50% During the fourth week 25% After the fourth week No Refund We regret that there can be no refunds for registration fees. Group Classes and Ensembles There are NO refunds for ensembles or group classes, as their viability is based on minimum enrolments. These programs are based on a sequential curriculum that does not allow for continuous intake, therefore the space cannot be refilled if a student withdraws mid-term. Transfers The VCM encourages students to remain with the same teacher throughout the term for which they have registered. However, in exceptional circumstances, transfers may be requested through the Registrar s Office. The Registrar will consult with the Dean and the respective Department Head on a case-by-case basis. The VCM does not guarantee transfer to a different teacher, but every effort will be made to ensure students are placed appropriately with an instructor that meets their individual needs. Statutory Holidays Individual lessons that fall on statutory holidays have been included in the 36-week term. Because the office and building are often closed on these days, an alternate lesson time should be arranged for those weeks. Please verify your lesson schedule with your teacher.
