2 A Rich & Varied Diet of Church Music If you Google Clara M. Davis, you will be led to a piece of classic medical research from the last century about an infant/child s innate ability to choose a healthy diet for himself or herself, if given a wide variety of food choices. In this study, children were allowed to make all of their own food choices for the first four years of life. Every morsel eaten was recorded. Somehow, when given the chance, it was shown that a child will, without any guidelines or food pyramids, assemble a combination of nutrients perfect for his or her body. Likewise, if you Google Streams of Song by Michael Hawn, you will be led to the research and writing of my hymnologist friend and colleague Michael Hawn. Dr. Hawn was a Rice-Cunningham lecturer at Knollwood in In a wonderful weekend of the celebration of the richness of a world of congregational song, Michael suggested to us that if a congregation is exposed to enough choices in song, a rich and healthy worship life will be maintained. A nutritious and authentic worship of God simply cannot be limited to the music of our Western European tradition. Michael goes on to identify seven streams of church song, and encourages congregations to dip, at least their toes, into all seven streams from time to time. At Knollwood we have tried to follow Michael s lead by indulging in music from all of the streams and from all over the world. Our impetus for music planning for is captured in the theme of our Dec. 14 Christmas festival, A Light Unto the Gentiles (Luke 2:32). Christ came to bring Good News, not just to those of us who share a Western European descent (of course), but for the entire world. Our goal is to continually expand our musical language to forever search for that perfect combination of musical nutrients for optimal spiritual health. Following our pastor Bob Setzer s return from 3 Dr. Kenneth Wilson

6 Suzuki Guitar Program AT KNOLLWOOD Voice Study at Knollwood Available Beginning September, 2014 Marty Edwards teaching guitar classes. Classical guitar has been an integral part of the Knollwood Music Ministry for almost 30 years. One shining example that we ll feature in this year s booklet is Jay Clifford, son of Fred and Dean Clifford. Jay was the first of a number KBC s young guitarists to attend UNCSA as guitar majors. Twenty-five years later, Jay remains a very successful professional guitarist, composer, singer and producer. Most recently, Jay has been commissioned to write a number of pieces for major orchestras across the country. We hope that you might follow Fred and Dean s lead in making music education an integral part of your child s life. We are fortunate to have as a member of our congregation and director of our program guitar virtuoso, concert artist, composer and certified Suzuki guitar teacher Marty Edwards. Mr. Edwards recently earned a Master of Music in Classical Guitar Performance at UNCSA. He has continued his training in several certification programs in guitar offered by The Suzuki Association of the Americas. At Knollwood, as in all Suzuki programs, the training takes the form of private instruction and group classes. Information about openings and pricing for lessons is available by contacting Mr. Edwards marty@martyedwardsguitar.com. Please let us know of your interest. Students of all ages are welcomed, beginning with age 3. In a new effort to ever-improve singing at Knollwood, we are making voice lessons available this fall. Knollwood member, and Chancel Choir member, Maggie Gallagher will include one afternoon a week at Knollwood in her already thriving studio schedule. Mrs. Gallagher (or Maggie, as she prefers) is an institution in music and drama in this city. She typically directs, or music directs, or acts and sings in a dozen productions a year in this area and beyond. As a voice major, Maggie s undergraduate degree is from High Point University. She went on to receive the Master of Music degree under the tutelage of Dr. Lara Hoggard at UNC-CH. Her first major role on the opera stage was as Baby Doe Tabor in the American opera The Ballad of Baby Doe. Maggie taught choral music in the Guildford school system for 30 years. In demand as a vocal soloist, Maggie has sung leading roles in such works as the Brahms Requiem, Fauré Requiem, Poulenc Gloria, and many other masterpieces. Maggie is now retired from teaching with the school system but continues to teach voice privately and directs/music directs/sings/acts in many productions for area theatres. 7 Body Mind Spirit Voice It takes the WHOLE PERSON To Sing and Rejoice! Our Children s Choir Leaders: believe that all people, created in God s image, are gifted with unique skills, talents and abilities. Therefore we seek to help our children to be reflections of God s creativity and imagination in worship and the world. believe that the Creator deserves the best people have to give and the best that they can be. Therefore, we strive to help our children develop their skills and grow in understanding so that their music making and worship are both meaningful and Spirit-filled. believe that the music and the arts provide vehicles for the heart and whole person to encounter and respond to God s grace and goodness. Therefore, we seek to provide a variety of worship and learning experiences that invite our children into the embrace of God and allow them opportunities to respond as they are able. Led by Knollwood Composer-in-Residence Dr. Susan Borwick, the Knollwood brass ensemble brings great energy and excitement to our worship, especially on festival Sundays. Dr. Borwick, Professor of Music at Wake Forest University, leads the group in sacred repertoire for brass ensemble, works for brass and choir, and arrangements from her own pen. The group is open to any intermediate level and above brass players, including advanced high school musicians. The Ensemble rehearses most weeks on Sunday morning at 8:45, and plays for worship periodically throughout the year typically on World Communion Sunday, All Saints Sunday, Thanksgiving Sunday, Christmas Festival, Founder s Day, and Easter Sunday. The performance dates for this year are listed on p. 25. believe that everything in a child s environment speaks to the child. Therefore, we seek to offer materials that are engaging, of the highest quality, and worthy of the child s time and attention. In addition, our music ministry for children strives to present those materials through a whole person approach to learning --- body, mind, spirit, and voice. believe children learn through play. Therefore, we seek to facilitate learning through thoughtfully planned games and activities appropriate to their ages. Teach them well and let them lead the way. 9 Christmas Festival 2014 A Light Unto the Gentiles December 14 10:55 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Combined Choirs, Bells, Instruments Each December Knollwood choirs and instrumentalists join forces to present a festival celebrating the coming of the Christ Child. This highly-anticipated concert of Advent and Christmas music will be presented by the Carol Choir (1st-2nd graders), Chapel Choir (3rd-5th graders), Youth Choir (6th-12th graders), Chancel Choir, Middle School, High School, and Chancel Bell Choirs, Knollwood Youth Guitar Ensemble,, and various other guest musicians. The theme for this year s festival, A Light Unto the Gentiles, is drawn from the Song of Simeon (Nunc Dimittis) Good News is proclaimed for all peoples, the world over. The festival will be a feast of carols from many nations. The concluding work will be the Conrad Susa score Carols and Lullabies: Christmas in the Southwest. This collection of carols from Mexico, Spain, and other parts of the Latin world is accompanied by marimba, classical guitar, and harp. We hope you will mark your calendar now to be a part of this annual festival! Handbells at Knollwood On most Sundays, September - May, worship at Knollwood is enriched with the music of one or more of our five handbell choirs. Children as young as second and third grade begin in Chimers, learning fundamentals of music reading and ringing. As ringers become older and more experienced, the repertoire becomes increasingly more challenging through Children s Bells, Middle School Bells, High School Bells, and Chancel Bells. Each group rings regularly for worship, usually once per month. This year, Chancel Bells will participate in the OctoberRing Festival in Mount Airy as well as perform in a joint concert with ringers at First Christian Church here in Winston-Salem. Musical offerings include hymn settings and classical music transcriptions that complement the worship service with a spirit of praise, contemplation, or communion. One unique aspect of handbell ringing is that players are solely responsible for their notes, so each ringer must learn to hold their part while at the same time playing as part of a unified ensemble, much like playing a position on a sports team. We strive for skillful excellence during weekly rehearsals in order to give our best to glorify God in worship. The choirs are supported by three sets of handbells spanning more than five octaves plus five octaves of handchimes. Choirs are often combined with each other or with singers, brass, and/or organ, particularly on festival Sundays. Interested in ringing handbells? Contact Lauren Winkelman, lauren@knollwood.org

11 Hymns for a lifetime Children s Hymn Memorization Program A singing faith is a shared faith. Each week the most important congregation of all, the gathered people of God, sing Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Colossians 3:16) in worship. This singing is the epitome of All of God s Children joining in one accord to praise God it is a village raising a child in our own sanctuary. We church music leaders prepare our children to participate in our village hymn sing each week by teaching them a basic repertoire of hymns. So far, about forty Knollwood children have joined the ranks of the Hymns-for-a-Lifetime All-Star Team, by memorizing and passing off the first stanza of sixty hymns. Once a child has learned to sing sixty hymns she or he is set for learning new hymns the rest of her or his life. From hymns children learn about God, about worshiping God, about God s love, about Jesus and his love for us, about our need to minister to others, and about our need to share our faith. Boys and girls are invited to learn and pass off these sixty hymns. (A listing of the hymns is posted at The immediate reward is a new hymnal, or a trophy, or their name on the permanent plaque in the choir room. But a far more important reward is the seed of the Word of God planted in these children s minds and hearts. We hope that each family will have a hymnal in their home for use in devotions and family singing. New hymnals are available in the music office. Composer in Residence at Knollwood For a number of years Knollwood has been honored to claim Dr. Susan Borwick composer, musicologist, music theorist, teacher, ordained minister, and Professor of Music at Wake Forest University, as our Composer-in-Residence. In this position she has supplied our congregation and our musicians with a wide variety of worship music carefully crafted for our unique worship needs. Her Benediction, recently republished by MorningStar Music, has been a staple in the Knollwood worship repertoire for over 25 years. Her music gifts to the congregations are many: anthems and carols for Christmas festivals, anthems for our Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration, orchestrations, music for variety shows, music for Jack Noffsinger s retirement party, for Sunday School class dinners, and even jazz charts for our brass group to use in the annual Christmas Jazz program all represent a gift of love that has enriched our life together. Thank you, Susan! A listing of Susan s compositions, complete with annotations from the composer, can be found at:
