1 PROGRAM Last Night at the Proms Fri 27 July 2018, 8pm Sun 29 July 2018, 2pm Perth Concert Hall
2 The West Australian Symphony Orchestra respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners, Custodians and Elders of the Indigenous Nations across Western Australia and on whose Lands we work. Welcome Welcome to WASO s very own Last Night at the Proms A Classical Spectacular that celebrates some of the best and most loved classical music, crowned with a Great British Proms finale. We begin with a right royal and regal affair, William Walton s Coronation March, Orb & Sceptre. Written for the coronation of King George VI in 1937, it was performed again at Queen Elizabeth s coronation in The title refers to the Globus cruciger (or, cross-bearing orb) held by monarchs through the ages and as you would expect it is filled throughout with joyful and glorious melodies fit for royalty. Once again we are thrilled that our Master of Musical Ceremonies Maestro Guy Noble has returned to Perth to conduct and guide us through this concert of favourite classical works. We re also delighted to be joined by one of Australia s greatest sopranos Emma Matthews as she treats us all to a taste of the golden age of late nineteenth century Vienna with music by Johann Strauss and Franz Lehar. We of course end the proceedings with all the patriotic anthems that we have come to expect from the Last Night of the Proms. So unfurl your flags and get your best voices ready to sing along with the WASO Chorus as we celebrate WASO s own Last Night at the Proms. Alan Tyrrell Program Manager WASO s 90th Anniversary Gala Tristan und Isolde Opera in Concert Thursday 16 August 6pm Sunday 19 August 2pm MATINEE Perth Concert Hall Join us for the classical event of the year. We are thrilled to welcome the greatest Tristan of our time, superstar tenor Stuart Skelton and world renowned soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek to headline the finest cast ever assembled for this ground-breaking opera. It s as impressive a cast as you d be lucky to find at Covent Garden or The Met. - Limelight Magazine For more information and to book, visit waso.com.au or call the Box Office at Asher Fisch appears courtesy of Wesfarmers Arts. 2

And was the Holy Lamb of God On England s pleasant pastures seen? And did the Countenance Divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among these dark Satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand Till we have built Jerusalem In England s green and pleasant land! Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 (Land of Hope and Glory) Edward Elgar ( ) Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free, How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee? Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set; God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet, God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet. 7
