2 The current Music and Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic has championed music as a catalyst for individual, environmental, and world change. I cannot say that music is the only thing that will save the world, but we have to put art somewhere far more central to the main sense of our society. In addition to a series of curated concerts, Maestro Dudamel will come to campus in three separate visits. Events open to the public, many of them free, include: Panel discussions, public talks and interdisciplinary colloquia on a range of current issues Events featuring students of El Sistemainspired music education programs across the United States - Gustavo Dudamel Visual art inspired by music Celebrations of Latin American culture, including Venezuelan folk music This schedule will continue to be updated. 3 PRINCETON UNIVERSITY CONCERTS GUSTAVO DUDAMEL, ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE Jorge Glem Cuatro/Mandolin DECEMBER 2018 Saturday, December 1, 2018 FREE OPENING CELEBRATION 9:00pm BETSAYDA MACHADO Opening Remarks at 7:30PM Everyone is invited for a musical party with venerated Afro-Venezuelan folk music singer Betsayda Machado the voice of Venezuela - and Grammynominated cuatro/mandolin virtuoso Jorge Glem. In a program called Aguinaldos y Parrandas, the duo, alongside Maestro Dudamel s colleagues special guests Diego Álvarez on percussion and Gonzalo Teppa on bass, gives us a taste of timeless holiday traditions that are to this day celebrated throughout Latin American villages in a performance described by NPR as one of the most joyful shows I ve seen in years. 4 ...a voice PRINCETON UNIVERSITY CONCERTS GUSTAVO DUDAMEL, ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE Quartet 212 Members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra hued like polished teak... arrestingly vulnerable - The New York Times Sunday, December 2, :00pm QUARTET 212 with EMILY D ANGELO, Mezzo-Soprano Musical Preview at 1:00pm by students of the Boston String Academy, an El Sistema-inspired program. An ensemble featuring principal members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra translate their extensive experience in the operatic world into a program that highlight s music s intimate relationship with the human voice. Works by Haydn, Respighi, Verdi and a new work written for the ocassion by Princeton University faculty composer Donnacha Dennehy. Emily D Angelo Mezzo-soprano 4:00pm ART, EDUCATION, & SOCIAL CHANGE IN LATIN AMERICA: A PUBLIC CONVERSATION Following the first residency concert curated by Maestro Dudamel, the conductor sits down with acclaimed musicologist and Harvard Dictionary of Music editor Don Michael Randel to discuss the issues closest to his heart. 5 JANUARY 2019 PRINCETON UNIVERSITY CONCERTS GUSTAVO DUDAMEL, ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE Buenos Aires Monday, January 7, :00pm MUSICIANS FROM THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC Musical Preview at 6:00pm by El Sistema students from the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles ( YOLA ) Conductor Sir Georg Solti once said Mozart makes you believe in God, and it s hard to disagree after listening to the absolute perfection of his Clarinet Quintet. As the luminous centerpiece of this program that explores the intersection of art and spirituality, Mozart s music will be placed side-by-side with that of living Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, whose holy minimalist works evoke a kind of meditative transcendence, containing oceans of feeling in their seemingly simple repetitions. A new work by Princeton University faculty composer Juri Seo rounds out this intense, introspective program. Wednesday, January 9, :30pm EL SISTEMA: A PANEL DISCUSSION El Sistema, a publicly financed music education program for underserved children founded in Venezuela in 1975, has now grown to provide music access to young students around the world. Its most famous alumnus is none other than Gustavo Dudamel. Join the legendary conductor for a panel discussion about El Sistema, moderated by Stanley Katz, Professor of Public and International Affairs and Director of the Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies. Panelists include individuals who have similarly devoted themselves to advocating for accessible systematic music education: Elsje Kibler-Vermaas (YOLA, Acting Director of Education), Anne Fitzgibbon (Harmony Program, Founder and Executive Director), and Lou Chen 19. MCCOSH 10 9:00pm 6:00pm ART & FAITH: A PANEL DISCUSSION Following the concert, panelists discuss the intersection between Art & Faith in a public conversation moderated by Gustavo Dudamel. MUSIC MADE VISIBLE: METAPHORS OF THE EPHEMERAL: A GALLERY RECEPTION An art exhibit by local artist Marsha Levin-Rojer responds to Maestro Dudamel s understanding that the power of music lies in its invisible beauty, the fact that sound, vibration, and harmony can create something in us. This exhibit is on view from November 30, 2018 to January 31, BERNSTEIN GALLERY AT THE WOODROW WILSON SCHOOL Both events are free and hosted by the Center for Arts & Cutural Policy Studies at Woodrow Wilson School.

6 PRINCETON UNIVERSITY CONCERTS GUSTAVO DUDAMEL, ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE APRIL 2019 Monday, April 22, :30pm 7:00pm THE LIBERATOR: FILM SCREENING Selected and with a score by Gustavo Dudamel, this film by Alberto Arvelo celebrates the life of Simón Bolívar as a beacon of freedom throughout South America. A Q&A will follow. PRINCETON GARDEN THEATRE Tickets on sale at the Princeton Garden Theatre Tuesday, April 23, :00pm MUSICIANS FROM THE BERLIN PHILHARMONIC Musical Preview at 6:00pm by El Sistema students from the Harmony Program of New York City Maestro Dudamel s relationship to the hallowed Berlin Philharmonic stretches back a decade and includes close personal connections with the orchestra s most recent Music Directors, Claudio Abbado and Sir Simon Rattle. For this concert Dudamel has chosen a handful of musicians from the august orchestra to perform a program that explores nature in all its forms from science to the environment to the very nature of humanity itself. Works by Schubert and Wagner, as well as a new work by Princeton University faculty composer Steven Mackey, paint a broad musical portrait of the physical world and beyond that is perhaps most elegantly encompassed by poet Heinrich Heine: When words leave off, music begins. The musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic will be joined by students from the elite KonstKnekt training academy. ART & NATURE: A PANEL DISCUSSION Following the concert, panelists including Nobel Prizewinner physicist Kip Thorne (CalTech), discuss the intersection between Art & Nature, in a public conversation moderated by Gustavo Dudamel. Milberg 53 visiting lecturer in Irish Letters at Princeton. The conversation will be chaired by Melissa Lane, Class of 1943 Professor of Politics and Director of the University Center for Human Values. A reception will follow. Panelists, including Professors Rachel Price and Javier Guerrero, will discuss the intersection betwen Art and Society. Maestro Dudamel picks up his baton for the first time in the residency and does what he loves most: inspiring and empowering young people through the power of music. He will lead the Princeton University Orchestra and Glee Club in a program centered around two great Shakespeare plays, Tchaikovsky s take on Romeo and Juliet and Mendelssohn s majestic Incidental Music to A Midsummer Night s Dream. Tickets will be released to the public on Monday, April 1, 2019 Sunday, April 28, :00pm COMMUNIVERSITY SHOWCASE Hundreds of students from El Sistema-inspired programs throughout NJ and their guests, Play on, Philly! and OrchKids of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, will come together for a day of shared music making: a seminario. The long-standing tradition in the El Sistema movement of bringing students together for a large-scale experience will include Maestro Dudamel working with the programs instructors, and sharing his invaluable experience of working with Sistema orchestras. 8 The overarching goal of Gustavo Dudamel s residency at Princeton University Concerts is to bring people together through music, to explore the impact and relevance of music both inside and outside of the concert hall, and to explore the role of the artist in our times.
