2 About Colburn Community School of Performing Arts The Colburn Community School of Performing Arts (CSPA) serves students of all ages with classes in music, dance, drama and early childhood arts education, taught by acclaimed faculty committed to providing the highest quality teaching on a modern campus designed solely for excellence in performance and education. Founded in 1950 as an open-enrollment school, the CSPA covers a broad range of styles, age levels and degrees of difficulty. Music classes include applied musical instruction, music theory, chamber ensemble and orchestral opportunities. Dance classes through the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute offer a wide range in disciplines from ballet, tap, modern, creative, jazz and musical theatre dance. In addition to their individual studies, Colburn students participate in a variety of community outreach programs and perform in more than 300 concerts and recitals each year, many of which are free and open to the public. The Colburn Community School of Performing Arts has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1980 and is also a member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education. Adaptive Music Program/Lessons for Individuals with Special Needs The CSPA provides a special program for adults and children with academic or learning challenges. The Adaptive Music Program (AMP) provides individualized music programming and adapted music instruction by qualified specialist Ms. Francesca Bori. Students with special needs have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument within a therapeutic environment designed to develop one s own potential. This process begins with a structured music-based assessment of motor skills, behavioral, social and emotional levels, attention and communication ability. Monthly meetings with parents and yearly written summaries provide an opportunity to review the progress of the student. For group classes, New Students must register in person during open enrollment in order to receive student ID badges/key cards. Partial payment is mandatorily due upon registration. All students must register before they can attend class. Space is available on a first come first served basis. Continuing students have two weeks of priority registration. 3 Welcome to Colburn's Community School We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Susan Cook as the next Dean of the CSPA. Susan has over 25 years of experience in arts administration. Her career began in the Chicago area where she held progressively more senior positions at the Merit School of Music, Sherwood Community Music School at Columbia College Chicago, and Midwest Young Artists. Prior to her appointment at Colburn, Susan served as Dean, The Royal Conservatory School (RCS), in Toronto. Working closely and collaboratively with her staff, Susan reinvigorated the community school by growing and developing an extensive and holistic music education model for music lovers of all ages, with a clear continuum of instruction from infancy through adulthood. Susan Cook Dean She received her Master of Music Performance from Northwestern University, and Premier Prix du Saxophone at the National Conservatoire of Bordeaux. Susan also served on the faculty of DePaul University from and Carthage College for seven years. She has toured with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Riccardo Muti, and performed with many of Chicago s premiere orchestras including Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, Joeffrey Ballet, and Chicago Opera Theatre. It has been wonderful to see the continued growth of our student population over the years. Not only are families returning year after year, but many of you promote our school to your fellow friends and neighbors. And for that, we thank you for your endorsement. To help us manage the 1,800 + students and each of their unique schedules, we will be launching a new online registration platform. This will improve upon our current system, which will allow family accounts, online payment plans, and much, much more. Please help us streamline our registration processes to make the experience more efficient by registering online this year. 4 Private Music Instruction All Private Instruction must take place on the Colburn School campus. Individual lesson schedules are arranged between the instructor and the student. All new students must first submit an Online Inquiry Form through our website. The information will be transferred to the appropriate department chair who will then contact the student to schedule an informal interview/audition within two weeks of receipt. Upon completion of the interview, the department chair will determine which instructor, if any, the student can be placed with. Please go to to submit your inquiry. Fall Private Instruction will run from Aug 24 - Dec 20; all meetings must be arranged with the instructor. Scheduled dates and times for juries will be coordinated by each Department Chair for the String, Voice, Piano, and Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion Departments and the Dean s office. The jury experience will be in lieu of one lesson for the academic year and feedback from the jury as well as the private teacher will be provided to both students and parents. The Colburn School greatly values this as an important learning experience for each student. Page 4

5 Early Childhood 2018 Fall - Semester Enrollment The Early Childhood Program introduces young children to music and the performing arts. The curriculum is skill-based and is designed to explore music, theory, voice, movement, and drama. Enrollment in classes is strictly determined according to the age of the child and classes themselves may be repeated if the faculty determines it would be beneficial to the child. Classes are in high demand, and enrollment closes very quickly; waitlists are maintained once a class is closed. If your child is new to Colburn, please contact the CSPA office to learn more about registration procedures. Please note: An adult must accompany the child for the entire duration of the class. In most classes, parents are invited to participate at the level of involvement determined by the teacher. The class provides musical experiences in the development of motor and ear-training skills, hand-eye coordination, a sense of keyboard geography, finger dexterity, and concentration. This course offers prereading exercises to develop the child's keyboard sense. Students must have access to an acoustic (not electronic) piano for daily practice. Early Childhood Registration for New Students On WED, AUGUST 15 new parents are required to enroll in-person. 8 Suzuki String Program Year-long Commitment The Suzuki method, founded by Japanese violinist Dr. Shinichi Suzuki ( ), rests on the philosophy that every child is born with musical ability that can be nurtured and developed to a high level. The method requires parental participation in every lesson and in-home daily practice, and a major commitment of time. Prior to enrollment, an extensive application process begins with submitting an Online Inquiry Form. Student placements have already been determined for the academic year. New students must inquire before January 15, 2019 for consideration for the following academic year. Children must be at least 4 years old and no older than 6 by January 15, 2019 to be eligible. Dalcroze for Suzuki Dalcroze Eurythmics is the exploration of movement, solfege, and improvisation. The class encourages students' active listening skills and immediate physical responsiveness. Through class activities, students internalize the music which promotes confident and accurate music learning experiences. This class is designed specifically for students in our Suzuki Program and will expand on both Suzuki and outside repertoire. 12 Music Theory Year-long Commitment Courses in music theory are critical to every student's musical education. The CSPA offers a progression of courses ranging from the most basic concepts such as reading pitches and rhythm in the treble and bass clefs, to the most complex analysis of ultra-chromatic harmony of the 19th century. Community School of Performing Arts Policies PLEASE READ THE NEW SCHOOL POLICY BELOW REGARDING THE DROP PROCEDURE FOR COURSES THAT REQUIRE JURIES FOR PRIVATE LESSONS At the Colburn School, we strive for open communication between faculty, students and administration and ask that you familiarize yourself with the summary of our school policies below. The complete school policy can be found on our website at colburnschool.edu Registration Procedure The registration procedures at The Colburn School are designed to place students in appropriate courses through interviews, a uditions, and other screening methods. These procedures help to minimize enrollment in inappropriate courses, and to minimize the need to d rop lessons and classes. Registration must be completed during the Formal Registration period listed on page 1 of this Schedule of Classes to avoid a late fee. Any student who registers after the Formal Registration period will be subject to a $25 late registration fee. Students beginning group classes after the start of a semester will be charged tuition on a pro -rated basis, as follows: Weeks 1-4: 100% of tuition, Weeks 5-8: 75% of tuition, Weeks 9-12: 50% of tuition, and very rarely may students begin during Weeks 13-16: 25% of tuition. Class fees are not pro-rated for the summer session Jury Requirement: As an important component of the learning experience for all students who take private lessons, a jury examination is required for all students in CSPA. Scheduled dates and times for juries will be coordinated by each Department Chair for the String, Voice, Piano, and Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion Department. The jury experience will be in lieu of one lesson for the academic year and feedback from the jury as well as the private teacher will be provided to both students and parents. 14 Community School of Performing Arts Policies (continued) Drop/Withdraw Procedure The parent/student must complete and submit the Drop Form either in person, via or fax, prior to the first day of the s emester. Once receipt is confirmed by the CSPA office, prior to the first day of the semester, the request to drop the class, ensemble, and /or private instruction will be reviewed by the Dean. Upon the Dean s approval, 100% of the tuition is refunded. Anytime during the first week of the semester, 75% of the tuition is refunded. After the first week through the second week, 50% of the tuition is refunded. After the second week through the third week, 25% of the tuition is refunded. After the third week, there are NO REFUNDS. Informing an instructor of a decision to withdraw, stopping payment, or not attending class does not constitute a withdrawal. Exceptional requests for refunds due to a family or medical emergency may be made in writing to the Dean within 14 days of the missed cla ss and must include appropriate documentation. There is no guarantee that a full refund will be approved due to a family or medical emerg ency. For classes and ensembles that require a year-long commitment, students may request to drop the spring semester during the formal drop period. The formal drop period for the academic year is defined as December 1, January 12, 2019, which will prove the necessary time for the ensemble director/faculty to plan accordingly. A drop form must be submitted first to the faculty or ensemble di rector, as appropriate, for their signature and approval. The second step is for the student to submit the signed drop form to the CSPA Registration Office for approval by the Dean. All Year-Long required registrations for the classes and ensembles listed below require a completed dr op form to be submitted to the CSPA Registration Office within the formal drop period to avoid any further Spring Semester Tuition Charges. Absence Policies Students must notify faculty of anticipated absences as a courtesy to the faculty members; however, this does not exempt the student from payment as contracted. There will be no makeup lessons for student absences. If a teacher is absent from a scheduled lesson, a make-up lesson shall be scheduled at a mutually convenient time. If the student misses a make-up lesson, there will be no second make-up opportunity. In cases of sudden illness on the part of the teacher, the teacher and The School shall make every reasonable attempt to notify studen ts. Suspension Delinquency in payment of tuition and fees may result in suspension of a student's enrollment. Suspended students shall not b e allowed to attend classes, rehearsals, or lessons; instruction shall be resumed only upon full payment of any balance due and with appro val of the Registrar. There will be no credit or make-up for any lessons or classes missed because of suspension. Payments Payment must accompany the registration form. Payment of tuition and fees is expected in full at the time of enrollment unles s a payment plan is requested. Upon approval of a payment plan, all payments are due on or before the 15 th of the month. All payment plan arrangements must be made directly with the Cashier s Office. Any payments received after the 15 th will be automatically assessed a $25 late fee. Subsequent late fees will be charged every month until payment is received. Private Instruction All private instruction must take place on campus at The Colburn School at 200 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA Key Card Access/Student ID Badges In an effort to enhance campus security, each family will be given two key cards to access the building at all times. All stu dents must request a key card at the security desk on Grand Avenue and show proof of current enrollment. Key cards will be required to enter build ings, access elevators and use of the library. Please pay attention to posted signs and requests made by security guards to show your card key. Lost card keys can be replaced for a fee of $25. Parking With a student population of 1,800 students, parking at the Colburn School is not guaranteed. A limited number of spaces are available to CSPA families on a first come first served basis. Families can receive up to two parking decals upon completing registration. However, a parking decal does not constitute a guaranteed parking space. On a busy day when there is a line of cars waiting to enter the garage, students may be dropped off in front of the school on Grand Avenue. There is a loading area in front of the doors across from the Broad Museu m. After dropping off your student, please make your way to Lower Grand and patiently wait in line for a parking space to open in the garage. I f you do not wish to wait for a spot to open, offsite parking at a discounted rate is available at Lot #3 on the southeast corner of Olive and 2 nd Street. Please inquire at the Cashier window to purchase validations in advance. Emergency Alert System The Colburn School notifies its community of emergency situations through text messages using an alert system called InformaC ast. In the event of an emergency, such as a fire, active shooter, or earthquake, messages will inform the community of the nature of the emerg ency, what to do, and when the situation is clear.
