1 Inspiring. Creating. Performing About Us The Eastman Community Music School offers music lessons, ensembles, classes, and workshops to community members of all ages and backgrounds. With 150 teachers including a topnotch mix of artist-educators, collegiate faculty, and Eastman undergraduate and graduate students ECMS serves approximately 1,600 community members during the school year and hundreds more each summer. From pre-school and early childhood programs to college prep and diploma programs to adult ensembles and classes, ECMS nurtures and inspires students at all levels. Offerings Within each age group, ECMS offerings are divided into lessons, classes, and ensembles. PRIVATE LESSONS are available on all instruments and in voice, composition, and jazz improvisation with ECMS instructors and interns. For most instrumentalists, the recommended age for beginning private study is age 7. Pianists and violinists may start at a younger age; for vocalists, the recommended age is about 10. GROUP CLASSES include a variety of topics from early childhood music classes to music theory, aural skills, technology and history to group voice and instrument instruction. ENSEMBLES provide students with the opportunity to rehearse, create, and perform music together in a supportive, nurturing, and inspiring environment. While most ensembles can be taken with or without concurrent private instruction, they offer a venue for students to apply the skills learned in individual lessons to collaborative music making. Throughout the year, ECMS offers a wealth of additional learning experiences, including workshops, masterclasses, recitals, and summer programs. Please visit our website for complete and current details:

2 Tuition and Fees REGISTRATION FEES A nonrefundable registration fee of $15 per semester will be charged to all students on the first bill of each semester, except those in Bridges and Early Childhood Music classes. These fees help to offset the cost of ECMS staffing, security and ID cards, concert recording and live-streaming, and accompanist services. PRIVATE LESSONS Lesson prices vary based on the length of lesson and whether studying with Instructors or Interns. Tuition for all ECMS offerings, including lessons, is billed by the semester. Fall and Spring semesters are 17 weeks long each. This variety is the Eastman Advantage, which we support through our Diploma Program and through course discounts for students enrolled in private lessons. See chart for details. Students! Receive an additional 25% off FUNDAMENTAL MUSICIANSHIP CLASSES Additional Discounts Must be enrolled in lessons to receive discount. (value of approx. $100 off!) FAMILY DISCOUNT For multiple students residing in the same household, ECMS will waive registration fees for the second and subsequent student(s). Students must indicate family members names on the registration form or, send an to community@ esm.rochester.edu. UR TUITION WAIVERS University of Rochester employees and their dependent children may be eligible to receive a 25% tuition waiver off ECMS tuition. Tuition waivers are good for one year from July 1-June 30, and must be renewed annually. For complete details, please consult the University of Rochester Human Resources webpage. The Benefits office makes all determinations regarding eligibility. FREE MUSICIANSHIP CLASSES FOR ENROLLMENTS IN CHILDREN S CHORUSES Elementary musicianship classes are free for Eastman Young Children s Chorus and Eastman Children s Chorus members in grades 2-8. These classes are conveniently scheduled back-to-back, with teachers leading students between the classes on the chorus train. Students in Children s Chorus who complete all levels of Elementary Musicianship may go on to take Fundamental Musicianship: Dalcroze and Fundamental Musicianship I free of charge. NEW HORIZONS DISCOUNTS Those registered in a core ensemble receive a 25% discount on all other New Horizons Ensembles. Core ensembles include Green Band, Intermediate & Advanced Band, Beginning Strings, Full Orchestra, Advanced String Orchestra, Chorus, Big Band, and Vintage Jazz Band. New Horizons tuition is FREE for those who are 90 or older. Snowbird Policy: New Horizons members who are gone four or more consecutive months during the winter are asked to notify the ECMS office by December, and they will be billed for the fall semester only. All are welcome to attend rehearsals for the balance of the school year at no additional charge when they return. Complete policy details are available at esm.rochester.edu/community 2

3 Financial Policies Billing: Bills are sent before the beginning of each semester, and are due on the 10th of the following month. Subsequent outstanding balances will be assessed a monthly fee of 1% of the amount past due. The University of Rochester Bursar s Office places holds on accounts with balances greater than $25. These holds prevent students from registering for additional courses until tuition is paid. Payment can be made by check, cash, VISA, MasterCard, or Discover. We cannot take payment over the phone. Scholarships Financial assistance for regular academic year study is available to ECMS students for lessons, classes and ensembles. Assistance is awarded on the combined basis of merit and financial need, with preference given to students enrolled in the diploma program. Applications are accepted on a continuing basis throughout the year, but awards are determined twice each year after August 1st and December 1st deadlines. Applications are available online at or by calling the office: (585) FREE ENSEMBLES Thanks to the generosity of ECMS donors, we are able to offer the following ensembles tuition free*: Honors Chamber Ensembles (Winds, Brass, Strings, Krustenjerna Scholarship Flute Choir) are free of charge to students who successfully audition for and are placed in these groups. Honors Large Ensembles (Eastman Youth Chamber Singers and Eastman Youth Jazz Orchestra) are free of charge to students who successfully audition for and are placed in these groups, and are simultaneously enrolled in private lessons. Rochester City School District students are eligible to participate in the following free ensembles: Eastman-RCSD Jazz Ensemble, Pathways Clarinet Ensemble, Pathways Flute Choir, and RCSD Percussion Journey. Area music teachers may register for the following free ensembles: Music Educators Jazz Ensemble, Music Educators String Ensemble, Music Educators Wind Ensemble. * please note that free ensembles are subject to the normal registration fees of $15 per semester. Missed lessons and make-up policy: Students are charged for all activities for which they register, including those missed through student absence. As a courtesy, students are expected to notify their teachers of any impending absences. Instructors may offer make-up lessons, but they are not obligated to do so. If a teacher is absent for a lesson, a make-up will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time, or a substitute may teach the lesson. Missed music theory classes can be made up by attending alternate sections of the same class with permission of the instructor. Class cancellation policy: All classes are subject to cancellation if under-enrolled. Cancellations will occur by the end of the third week of the session. Classes or rehearsals cancelled due to weather or other emergencies are generally not made up or refunded. Withdrawal and Refunds Any request to withdraw must be made online at: Private Lessons: Students who state their intention to withdraw before the beginning of the term (Fall: Sep. 9, 2018; Spring: Jan. 22, 2019) will receive 100% refund or tuition credit. 50% refund or tuition credit will be granted when notification is received before the end of the sixth week (Fall: Oct. 20, 2018; Spring: Feb. 26, 2019). Classes or Ensembles: Students who withdraw during the first three weeks of a semester will receive 100% refund or tuition credit (Fall: Sept. 29, 2018; Spring: Feb 11, 2019). Those who withdraw during the fourth to sixth week of classes will receive 50% credit or refund. Students receive no refund if they drop after the sixth week of classes (Fall: Oct. 20, 2018; Spring: Feb. 26, 2019). Early Childhood Classes: Because of the popularity of these classes and the competition for placement, full refunds will be made only if notification of withdrawal is received at least one week prior to the start of the session. After that time, no refund will be made. In extreme cases involving serious illness, death, or relocation, arrangements for credit or refund can be made at the discretion of the Associate Dean. 3 esm.rochester.edu/community
