6 Notes on handling cable systems 6.1 Packaging The cables and cable systems are packed by HUBER+SUHNER for transport and storage in a manner that is appropriate for the specific product. The removal or damage of the packaging can cause a risk to safety or damage to the system in case of further transport or storage. Damage to the packaging or system must be notified to HUBER+SUHNER immediately upon receipt of the delivery. 6.2 Transport and storage The customer is responsible for safe and secure transport when moving and storing the goods. Appropriate auxiliary equipment must be used for transporting the goods. 6.3 Transport and storage Plastics tend to creep and age under mechanical, thermal and UV loads. This can cause lasting damage to the cable or cable system during storage. The following points must be observed with regard to the storage of cables and cable systems. The storage temperatures must not fall below or rise above the temperatures specified in the data sheet. The cables and cable systems must be protected against soiling and environmental influences, such as dust, UV rays, rain, snow, ice, hail, insects, rodents, etc. The cables and cable systems should therefore not be stored unprotected in the open air, but rather in a protected environment with appropriate protective cover. The cables and cable systems must be protected against harmful radiation. The cable reels supplied with the cables must not be stacked. The cable reels should in principle be transported and stored in a horizontal axis position, unless the system is delivered in a different position. The cables and cable systems must be protected against damage and environmental influences by means of suitable packaging. The cables and cable systems may only be repacked by HUBER+SUHNER. 6.4 Handling cable reels Improper winding or unwinding of cables and cable systems causes excessive loads on the cable fibers and reduces the material properties. This can have a negative impact on the optical/electrical performance or cause damage to the system. Cable reels with a stable flange must always be used. The cable reels must always be of the specified core diameter. The minimum core diameter can be found in the data sheet or checked with HUBER+SUHNER. Exception: Cables and cable systems delivered in the original packaging from HUBER+SUHNER may deviate from the specifications. The cables must never be wound or unwound under high tensile load. The cable should always be completely unwound. Any remaining winding on the reel can negatively affect the attenuation or cause increased temperatures to develop. The cables should always be wound onto the reel evenly. Criss-crossing windings, kinks, loops and knots must be avoided. Non-original HUBER+SUHNER cable reels must not be below the minimum core diameter. Original HUBER+SUHNER cable reels are deemed to be the reels supplied with the specific cable system. 10 6.5.2 Installation temperature The environmental temperature influences plastics greatly. Very low or very high temperatures can make the plastic hard and brittle or soft and pliable. Therefore, it is very important that the installation temperature range is observed. The installation temperature of a cable and cable system can be found in the technical data sheet or can be enquired about with HUBER+SUHNER Bending Improper bending of cables causes excessive loads on the cable fibers and can cause deviations from the data sheet to occur. This can lead to an altered insulation distance, the risk of disruptive discharge, increased line attenuation from radiation leakage and lasting damage to the cable. Do not bend the cable beyond its permissible radius. The minimum bend radius of a cable and cable system can be found in the technical data sheet or checked with HUBER+SUHNER. Do not bend or pull the cable around sharp objects. Prevent kinks and loops in cables by using kink protection. Avoid narrow bending radii by using bend protection. The risk of disruptive discharge from improper bending can cause electric shocks, which can result in injury or death Lateral pressure Excessive lateral pressure on cables causes excessive loads on the cable fibers and copper wires, and can cause deviations from the data sheet to occur. This can lead to an altered insulation distance, the risk of disruptive discharge, increased line attenuation from radiation leakage and lasting damage to the cable. The cables must not be stressed beyond the permitted limit for lateral pressure. The maximum permitted lateral pressure forces can be found in the technical data sheet or checked with HUBER+SUHNER. Do not clamp cables between sharp objects. Do not fasten cables with cable ties or hose clamps. Prevent stress on cables that is caused by loads (e.g. heavy objects, driving over with vehicles, etc.). The risk of disruptive discharge from improper lateral pressure can cause electric shocks, which can result in injury or death.. HUBER+SUHNER User manual for cables and cable systems 10

6.5.5 Tensile load Excessive tensile loads on cables cause excessive stress on the cable fibers and copper wires, and can cause deviations from the data sheet to occur. This can lead to an altered insulation distance, the risk of disruptive discharge, increased line attenuation from radiation leakage and lasting damage to the cable. The cables must not be stressed beyond the permitted limit for tensile load. The maximum permitted tensile forces can be found in the technical data sheet or checked with HUBER+SUHNER. Do not wind cables without load limitation. Do not create loops in cables in order to draw in the cable/cable system. Do not use rope clamps to draw in cables. Tensile forces must never be applied via the connector. Never pull cables over sharp objects. Apply tensile forces over some windings around a mandrel with a diameter of at least 20 times the cable diameter. In the case of a cable system with a protective tube or lifting aid, apply tensile forces via the eyelets of the protective tube. Prevent stress on the cable that is caused by loads (e.g. heavy objects, driving over with vehicles, etc.). The risk of disruptive discharge from improper tensile loads can cause electric shocks, which can result in injury or death. 7 Cleaning the cable systems 7.1 Cleaning plastic parts The material properties of plastic parts can be altered through contact with fats, oils or acids. The deterioration of plastic or plastic parts in the presence of aggressive chemicals cannot be ruled out. Therefore cleaning chemicals must not be used. Clean the plastic parts using only a lint-free cloth moistened with water. 7.2 Inspection of fiber optic connectors See separate document (DOC ) 7.3 Cleaning instruction fiber optic connectors See separate document (DOC ) HUBER+SUHNER User manual for cables and cable systems 11

8 General information on the installation of cable systems 8.1 Removal of packaging The packaging and transport safety devices must be completely removed before installation. Removal of the packaging using sharp instruments (knives, scissors, etc.) can damage the product. Utmost care is therefore required. 8.2 Winding and unwinding reels When winding and unwinding cable and cable systems, in addition to the information provided in section 5.4, the following points should also be observed: For winding and unwinding, place the reel flanges on a readily mobile base with wheels or use a suitable winding device with axis in order to ensure that the cable is not exposed to high tensile forces. Unwind the cable in the same direction shown by the cable winding. Lay longer sections of cable with roller devices. The roller devices should be positioned at regular intervals along the entire cable-laying length in order to minimise cable friction and the tensile force. The cable reel must be positioned in front of the installation object, so that the angle between the cable (direction of pulling) and installation object is as small as possible. Non-observance of these points may result in damage to the cable. HUBER+SUHNER User manual for cables and cable systems 12

8.3 Lifting gear The installer is responsible for ensuring that only inspected and appropriate lifting gear (crane, cable winches, lifting accessories, etc.) is used for lifting loads. The cables and cable systems may only be lifted at the lifting points intended by HUBER+SUHNER. An incorrect application of force can cause damage to the cable, the cable system and to the installation object. Incorrect or unsuitable lifting gear can cause damage to persons and objects, and even cause death. 8.4 Cable fastening Improper cable fastening can cause excessive loads on the cables. This can lead to an altered insulation distance, the risk of disruptive discharge, increased line attenuation from radiation leakage and lasting damage to the cable and multi-connector cable. Cable ends must be fastened in such a way that high loads cannot be applied to the cable cores and optical transmission conductor. Fasten the cable sheath with special cable clamps that hold the cable in the proper way. Clamps without a defined maximum clamping force, e.g. hose clamps and cable ties, must not be used, as the cable can be crushed too tightly without being noticed and therefore damaged. In case of tight cable entries, do not constrict the cable too much through the cable gland. The cable clamps must be able to withstand the applied forces. The appropriate installation must be chosen so that no forces are exerted onto the cable system housing by the cable. The risk of disruptive discharge from improper cable fastening can cause electric shocks, which can result in injury or death. HUBER+SUHNER User manual for cables and cable systems 13

8.5 Position of cable fastenings The offset (angle ) between cable clamp and cable entry or cable exit (distance A) must be kept as small as possible, ideally 0. The input and output cables must be fastened with a suitable cable clamp after a maximum of 1 metre of cable length from the housing (distance B).The distance between the below cable clamps is usually 1 metre. The minimum bend radius must always be observed. A 0.5 metres, B 1 metre HUBER+SUHNER User manual for cables and cable systems 14

8.6 Laying cable cores (single and/or multiple cores, fiber optic and/or copper) The cable cores must be protected against excessive loads. Lay the cable cores along the cable channel or duct without applying tensile force. The cable channel should have radii that at least meet the minimum bending radii specified for the cable cores Ensure a sufficient excess length of the cable cores so that the cable cores can adjust without any load in case of changes in the environmental conditions (e.g. temperature). Keep the cable away from the cable cores so that the cores cannot be crushed. The cable cores must not be twisted when they are being laid. Do not crush, damage or kink the cable cores, or pass them over sharp edges. Prevent laid cable cores from moving to inappropriate positions with, for example, Velcro fasteners, ensuring that the multi-connector cable can still move freely. When connecting the connectors, turn these into the correct position by the smallest necessary angle only. Direct the cable cores at the rear of the connector away in a straight position or with a generous bend. When unplugging the connector, ensure that the cable cores are not pulled and are not bent. Immediately after unplugging, protect the end surfaces of the connector with the corresponding dust-free protective cap. The risk of disruptive discharge from improper laying of cable cores can cause electric shocks, which can result in injury or death. HUBER+SUHNER User manual for cables and cable systems 15
