Note the configuration of the connectors (on the childboard) and corresponding pin arrays (on the parentboard): 20 pins on the side toward the front edge of the parentboard and 8 pins to the rear. Note that the 2-wire Switched 56 DBM line-interface board is cut out to fit against the DBM childboard. Position the DBM line-interface childboard so that it fits against the DBM childboard and the circuit card holes align with the snaplock posts. For the 2-wire Switched 56 DBM, turn the DSU childboard over and, through the square hole in the circuit card, plug the other end of the flat ribbon cable into the underside of the lineinterface childboard. Then, turn the DSU over again. 14. Set the DSU hardware straps. (If adding the Switched 56 DBM, there are no hardware straps to set.) 15. Reconnect the keypad flat cable by inserting the cable into its connector as far as it will go, then push down on the latching mechanism. Reconnect the LCD flat cable by aligning and gently pushing the cable pins back into the connector. 16. Replace the DSU in its cover and base, carefully aligning the rear panel and four snap tabs over their corresponding slots (two in the front and two in the back). Applying pressure at the four tab-slot connecting points, press the cover and base together until all four snap tabs snap securely into their corresponding slots. 17. Reconnect the DTE and DDS interface cables and connect the dial interface cable. Then, connect the ac power connector at the rear of the DSU and apply ac power. Figure 2-4. Adding the 2-Wire Switched 56 DBM Option to a Model 3610 DSU 2-7

27 COMSPHERE 3600 Series Data Service Units Power-Up Routine When power is applied, the DSU: Determines what options (DBM) are installed, if any. Runs a Device Test on itself and each of the installed options. During the tests, all indicators on the DCP light briefly and the message Power-Up Tests appears on the liquid crystal display (LCD). Displays the results of each test momentarily as Pass, Fail, or Abrt. These tests take about 20 seconds to complete. (Abrt indicates that the Device Test was aborted because a network loopback was in progress during the power-up procedure.) If the DSU or DBM fails the power-up test: Procedure 1. Reinstall the factory configuration options (use the FacC configuration for a control or FacT for a tributary). 2. Confirm the installed hardware options (DBM). If the keypad and/or LCD functions fail, check that the keypad and LCD flat cables are installed properly. 3. Re-execute the Device Test. (Press the key to return to the top-level menu, then select Local Test DSU Devic). If the test passes, continue with the installation. Since the DSU is not connected to the network, the red Alrm indicator is lit, and the LCD displays No Signal, indicating a facility alarm. The LCD displays health and status information. When the DSU and DBM pass the power-up test: Procedure 1. Make any desired configuration changes in the DBM and Backup option sets, and enter the local telephone number and at least one directory entry for a backup call destination, as described in the Configuration Branch section of Chapter Connect the dial network cable to the dial network interface and to the jack provided by the telephone company or circuit provider. 3. Test the operation of the DBM by manually setting up a call to another DBM or modem listed in this DBM s Backup Directory, using the Dial command from the DCP or async terminal, or the dial command from an NMS. Adding the SNA Diagnostic Interface Option to an Installed Model 3610 DSU The SNA Diagnostic Interface option can be added in the field if not previously installed. The SNA Diagnostic Interface firmware (also known as the LPDA-2 firmware) can be installed in the field but must be activated by a qualified service representative. In addition, the firmware on your DSU must be Version 3.11 or greater. If the DSU has the correct firmware version and the SNA Diagnostic Interface firmware has been activated by a qualified service representative, proceed with the installation procedure described in this section. To install the SNA Diagnostic Interface option: Procedure 1. Make a copy of the Configuration Worksheet provided in Appendix B. 2. Access the Configuration (Confg) branch and record all the current configuration option sets (including the directories if a DBM is installed) for the DSU and its options. 3. Disconnect the ac transformer, first from the ac outlet, then from the connector on the DSU s rear panel (refer to Figure 2-5). 4. In the Model 3610, the EPROM is located under the front bezel. Remove the front bezel. 5. Using the proper EPROM extractor tool, carefully remove the EPROM from the DSU circuit card. Note the location and orientation of the notch at the one edge of the EPROM, then set the EPROM aside. 2-8 December A2-GN32-70

28 Model 3610 Option Installation WARNING When installing an EPROM on the DSU, ensure that the notch on the EPROM is pointing inward on the circuit card. Installing the EPROM in the opposite orientation will both damage the EPROM and cause it to overheat, resulting in possible injury to you. 6. Orient the replacement EPROM on the circuit card with the notch pointing inward on the circuit card, and insert the EPROM into its mating connector. When sure that all the pins in the EPROM are aligned with their respective mating connectors, press the EPROM into place and make certain it is fully seated. FRONT BEZEL COMSPHERE 3615 EPROM NOTCH Figure 2-5. Model 3610 DSU and LPDA-2 Firmware Installation 2-9

29 COMSPHERE 3600 Series Data Service Units 7. Reconnect the ac power connector at the rear of the DSU and apply ac power. (Refer to the Power-up Routine section of this chapter as needed.) 8. Request the DSU s device identity (ID) from the Status (Stat) branch to verify the DSU s firmware version (DSU SW ver). If the firmware version displayed is not the version specified to support your operation s application, follow these instructions to remove the EPROM and replace it with the original firmware, then contact your service representative. 9. Reinstall the factory configuration options (use the FacC configuration for a control or FacT for a tributary). 10. Make any desired changes in the configuration option sets, using the Configuration Worksheets prepared prior to replacing the firmware. Verify that the network address and the backup directories, if a DBM is installed, are still correct. If not, make the appropriate changes. Switched 56 kbps Network Connection WARNING Do not insert the 2-wire switched 56 kbps plug into an RJ11C jack. This type of jack is intended for analog public switched telephone network (PSTN) devices. Doing so may cause equipment damage and harm to the telephone network. To make a physical connection to the switched 56 kbps network: Procedure 1. Plug either end of the switched 56 kbps network interface cable into the DSU jack labeled BACKUP (refer to Figure 2-6). For the 2-wire Switched 56 DBM, use the 6-pin cable. For the 4-wire Switched 56 DBM, use the 8-pin cable. 2. Plug the other end of the cable into the modular jack provided for the switched 56 kbps network connection. NOTE Before connecting the DSU to the switched 56 kbps network, ensure that approved primary protectors have been installed on the circuit in accordance with Article 800 of the National Electric Code, NFPA 70, in the United States and Section 60 of the Canadian Electric Code, Part 1, in Canada. If the DSU is equipped with a 4-wire Switched 56 DBM, an 8-pin cable is provided; if a 2-wire Switched 56 DBM, a 6-pin cable is provided. Figure 2-6.
