My first contact with S[quadrat] was when we were looking for a company to help us with the steel supply and integration of 2 large displays in the Telenor Arena, in Oslo, Norway. From my experience with Jumbotrons at Sony, I knew that there are only a few companies offering both the right quality of steel structure and the ability to implement LED displays. In addition, Sony and S[quadrat] worked closely together to design complete audiovisual solutions using S[quadrat] LED components, specifically designed for our stadium and venue customers. 6 quality management Bryan Böhme, Quality Manager of S[quadrat]: Hand in Hand with our OEM manufacturer After launching the SX controller family this year, our next step was to increase the quality level for all our existing products. We are very proud, that we design and produce the complete production of the SX controller components in Germany. The final programming and the reliability tests are all done in our headquarters Schwanstetten/Germany. This ensures that only 100% tested and functional SX components reach our customers. To make it short the quality of our SX components is a state of the art. Are all products produced by S[quadrat] or do you have a main supplier? Of course not all components are manufactured by us. This would overreach our workforce capacity. Because of this, we need a good and reliable partner, to overcome the massive demand what we got at present. Our main OEM manufacturer for our LED-Video-Screens is Retop and is located in the People Republic of China, Shenzhen. Retop and S[quadrat] are partners for more than 5 years. This good relationship helps us to push our demands with the certain diligence we need. How can S[quadrat] take effect on the quality of your OEM manufacturer? First I need to start with our design here in Germany, before I switch over to our OEM manufacturer in China. Launching a new product always starts with a prototype, which is produced in Germany. This will give us a great and fast feedback about the design. After the function test, the new product goes into the EMC-Laboratory for further testing (Newsletter PALME 2011). With all these information we can adjust our design and fulfill all requirements for our customers. After we have achieved the necessary requirements, we can start the production in China. For new designs which are produced in China, S[quadrat] will overview each production step. Therefore Rainer Beerhalter (R&D Director) and I will be during the complete production time on site and work with the production managers hand in hand. Upcoming problems can be then solved in a very early production status. I also need to mention, that we have a fully equipped Office at Retop. The most tools and test equipment are from Germany and guarantees us the best result when investigating the running production. As an example we have developed a new PCB-Test-Device. All these steps take time and are very work intensive. But this extra effort and expense is worth the work. There are no big problems which we need to solve at the end of the production and have no additional costs either (Illustration 1). Illustration 1: Error cost development Bryan Böhme Quality Manager Technical Could you explain the function of your PCB-Test-Device in more detail? As written above, we need to make sure that every step is done 100% accurate. For this we have developed a PCB- Test-Device. After the SMD process the PCB-Board can be tested in this device. In addition to that you take one PCB-Board and place it into the device. Several markers show, if it is placed in the correct position. Over a handle the device can be closed and dozens of gold-pins contact the PCB-Board with the LED s which are on the top. A test pattern changes each two seconds automatically and the user can see easily if there is something broken on the PCB-Board or not. We got several benefits with this PCB-Test-Device. First we have a genius and easy Test-Device for the SMD mounted PCB-Boards. This is unique for the complete test process, because we don t need to insert the LED s to see if it works or not. Another important issue is the handling of the PCB- Boards. The mechanical resilience will be much lower than testing the PCB-Boards in the common way. The last, but also important benefit is we can easily use the Test-Device for other projects. We only need to change the top cover and then can test different PCB-Boards. All things conspire to a superb PCB-Test-Device which will push the quality to another level. How does S[quadrat] do the final test before shipment? Report Before our OEM manufacturer assembles the cabinets, each single pixel card will have a Burn-In for at least 72 hours. Usually problems with the LED s will occur in this time period and can then be repaired. After assembling the LED-Video- Screen there will be a second Burn-In. This is again necessary to make sure that the pixel cards are all working fine. If this step is okay, the final check together with the quality department of Retop can start. For that I have created a special check list which covers all important parts of the cabinet. First when the checklist is fulfilled to 100% we can pack the cabinets and start the shipment. What is the goal of S[quadrat] products in the future? The goal is very easy. The quality output of each LED-Video- Screen should be all on the same, high level. Another very important goal is to standardize our products. This will also help to increase the quality on one side and on the other side we can achieve a benefit for our costs and give this benefit to our customers further. Another goal is to work closer with our OEM manufacturer and optimize the production line. This will take effect in the beginning of next year. There is a lot to do in the near future and things will take time, but I think the requirements what we have are very good and we can obtain and even increase our quality.

7 technical report Rainer Beerhalter, R&D Director of S[quadrat]: The Importance of EMC Design in LED Displays Rainer Beerhalter, R&D Director of S[quadrat]: S[quadrat] acquires Radiant Imaging Color Calibration System EMC compliance (IEC60950, EN55022) is not only a required feature for market entry but is becoming a design target in the development process of new LED displays. With pricing of LED systems going down, and sizes and pixel count of LED screens becoming higher, the color depth and refresh rates are going up. This result in current LED switching speeds of 25 MHz and beyond. These market requirements make it more and more difficult to keep radio frequency emissions below the limits of the standards for EMC. When analyzing the existing LED solutions in the market several years ago, there have been various approaches to prevent EMC radiation by extensive use of shielding techniques. This is becoming insufficient anymore. Investing large design resources and material in shielding construction to prevent radiation from components and electronic devices is not the solution. Putting our design resources into avoiding radiation at the source is Squadrat s strategy and vision. Results of our R&D confirm this vision. From the S[quadrat] SX [Master] control system and it s subsystems down to the LED driver are designed to minimize any possible source of radiation and fulfill EMC requirement like EN This is not only approved by measuring single LED cabinets inside a EMC measuring chamber at a certified lab (like LGA Nuremberg, Germany and Hummel Electronics, Fellbach, Germany) but also by performing field measurements for entire display systems. Let us take our installation in Audi-Sportpark (Ingolstadt, Germany) as an example. Our EMC partner Hummel Electronics has set up the emission measurement according to EN55022 on each of the two 35m² SO [10/20] NT displays. Both displays are measured to be EN55022-compliant. As a matter of course S[quadrat] not only follows emission requirements but also comply with irradiation and conducted emission requirements. With our EMC improvements by design we benefit from higher system stability, as emissions not only interfere with external services (security, ATC, mobile, radio, TV) but also inside large systems like LED walls. Another positive factor of our approach is reduced requirement for cabinet as a HF device (ie. proper shielding) and improved power efficiency. We are very satisfied with the results of our research. EMC compliance has been achieved by proper system design. By offering system field measurements to our valuable customers, we can prove our EMC compliance rather than stating these results on our product datasheets. S[quadrat] has invested more than 100k$ in a color calibration system from Radiant Imaging. With the new color calibration system we are able to measure and to calibrate our LED displays, either as service to existing systems or as part of factory production for new displays. How does this work? Simply spoken we take some photos of the LED display showing special test patterns. The camera is very similar to common DSLRs from Nikon or Canon, except that it has a cooled image sensor for superior noise performance and calibrated optics and signal processing. The resulting images are analyzed with the operation software of the color calibration system, to exactly determine brightness and color coordinates of each single LED in the display. With this data, the software computes correction coefficients for each LED and pixel used by the LED control system to compensate brightness and color variation, resulting in perfect homogeneity and color reproduction. What are the benefits? Even by using tight bin selection of LEDs used in production, the test can narrow the resulting speckled pattern (i.e. grain, block building) down to invisibility, making perfect image quality. With this test, we not only work in luminance but also with color. The display will have welldefined white point and color representation. Depending on used LED types the display will have support for full PAL, NTSC and Adobe srgb color gamut. This will reproduce customer s corporate logos and branding in perfect color matching. Calibrating the LED display every one or two years will compensate non-uniform aging of the LEDs, bringing back the quality to the first days display at the cost of a small percent of display brightness. Our new control system SX [Master] supports color calibration as built-in feature. The old S[quadrat] systems and even other brand display can be upgraded to color calibration feature using a preprocessor device that is connected in between the video source and the display controller. Calibration services are either offered in the field at customer s location. This service can be offered to S[quadrat] displays. This improves the quality of old systems to a significantly higher quality level.

8 sports Arena Nürnberger Versicherung Lia Manoliu Stadium Bucharest The installation of this project has to be timed together with the big lift, so that the main support could be attached to the right connecting hub on the support structure. That is incredibly important as a video cube with a machine platform of this size weighs at least 50 tonnes. 9 sports BMX Centre Manchester Wildpark Stadium Karlsruhe We installed one of the largest LED video displays in the German Soccer League! The 81.1 m² S[quadrat] SO [19/20] NT LED video display was equipped with the SX [Master] actuation. Real-time transmissions with virtual pixel support and colour calibration are guaranteed. The integrated content management software caters for simplest operation and playing. The challenge was to get the construction ready in time, cause the BMX Centre in Manchester wanted to start its operations real quick. We installed the super-flat S[quadrat] SO [16 SMD] NT LED video display with a depth of a mere 30 cm. Equipped with the best first range Nichia SMD LEDs in the world and with both a horizontal and a vertical angle of viewing of 140 degrees each. The display consists of 17 x 10 lightweight modules of our own S[quadrat] design, actuated via the S[quadrat] SX [Master] and S[quadrat] SX [Lyerbird]. 1 x S[quadrat] SO [16 SMD] NT Dimension: m² As a result of terribly and affecting weather conditions caused by mixture of snow, ice and hurricanes with a wind force of 12 we decided to use our latest developed new SOR [6/12] NT Rental module. 12 information design PalaisQuartier Frankfurt LED Cylinder DMG / MORI SEIKI The 16 m² LED cylinder was one of the centerpieces of the 7,600 m² DMG / Mori Seiko booth. It was used to present company and product information to visitors across the entire trade fair site, even without visiting the booth. The cylinder, consisting 8 panels was mounted on a special substructure so that it could be placed on the existing hexagonal corpus. As the system was to be installed directly in front of a brushed glass wall, servicing had to be possible from the front. SOC [30 DOT] brings big city lights to large buildings. It was developed especially for outdoor use and was designed precisely for implementation in very large building façades. SOC [30 DOT] is thus ideally suited to turn grey buildings into breathtaking design objects or colourful modern art sculptures. In the same manner they are also put in perspective by the placement of 10 each red, green and blue LEDs per DOT with an intensity of 60 cd per DOT.
