4 Picture Quality -REALITy PRO ENGINE The -Reality PRO Engine maximizes the picture quality of the full range of input sources, everything from dazzling 1080p Blu-ray Disc movies all the way to very low-resolution, highlycompressed web video. In particular, web video is extremely challenging for a video processor because of picture quality issues. It may look great on your cellphone and a little grainy on your laptop, but it can be nearly unwatchable when displayed on a 60-inch television at 1920 x The Sony -Reality PRO Engine starts with all the circuitry and all the benefits of the -Reality Engine, then adds Sony s original CA7 large-scale integrated (LSI) circuit. Unlike competing designs, the CA7 draws from a vast and exclusive Sony database containing thousands of pixel patterns that Sony collected from video images all over the world. Accumulated over more than a decade, the database enables the engine to know what a cloud, the edge a building or a tree looks like. The system also knows that a diagonal line is not a stairstep. The -Reality PRO Engine analyzes each pixel of the video signal, comparing it to neighboring pixels across the picture height, picture width and also pixels at the same screen location from preceding and following video frames. In this way, the system analyzes the picture across three dimensions: Width and Height (including diagonal) and Time. Because it analyzes vertical, horizontal and even diagonal motion from frame to frame, it knows that a white blob in the foreground of a building is actually a seagull flying across. Time Motion Capture the moving parts to longitudinal, landscape and diagonal directions of objects and analyze the motion to time axis direction and between frames by each pixel. Spatial and Temporal Analysis Every pixel is matched with the most appropriate patterns in Sony s vast database. The -Reality PRO Engine compares patterns in the image against patterns in the internal database to determine the best possible hue, saturation and brightness for each pixel. In this way, the system restores detail lost in compression and transmission. So fine texture in plants and clothes is optimized. The system also reduces noise and reproduces optimum contrast, color and sharpness. Screen image simulated. In addition, Sony Super Bit Mapping for Video (SBM-V) technology addresses the issue of false contours, where skin tones and areas of sky that should have smooth gradation are reproduced as distinct bands of color. Thanks to sophisticated error diffusion, SBM-V delivers amazingly smooth reproduction of faces, sunsets and other areas of subtle color gradation. No matter if you re watching a spectacular 1080p Blu-ray Disc movie or a low-resolution video off the web, the -Reality PRO Engine elicits the highest picture performance. 5 Picture Quality Picture Quality -REALITy ENGINE Blu-ray Disc movies, cable and satellite, HD and SD, even web video each place unique demands on a television s signal processing circuits. In particular, web video is full of picture quality issues. It may look great on your cellphone and a little grainy on your laptop, but it can be nearly unwatchable when displayed on a 60-inch television at 1920 x How do you get the best results from these very different sources? Sony s -Reality Engine is the answer. -Reality Engine -Reality Pro The -Reality Engine analyzes the scene and selectively applies three noise reduction processes prior to upscaling. Variable-level Intelligent MPEG Noise Reduction dramatically reduces two common problems in compressed video signals block noise and mosquito noise. Adaptive Random Noise Reduction addresses camera limitations while Adaptive Dot Noise Reduction corrects the dot crawl often found in old, composite video signals. After noise reduction, the -Reality performs Interlace-to-Progressive (IP) conversion and upscaling, as required. Film-based 24 frames-per-second content undergoes special IP conversion to reduce the stairstep jaggies that can form at high-contrast edges. Sony s Intelligent Image Enhancer analyzes four characteristics of each scene and selectively optimizes picture processing. (TV pictures simulated.) These characteristics not only influence our subjective impression of an image, they also have distinct mathematical properties. The Sony circuit divides the picture into these four parts, analyzes the quality of each scene and applies only the processing required for each part on that part. The result is a picture that s carefully optimized for natural image reproduction. One final refinement, Flat Tone Area Adaptive Processing, maintains image smoothness in areas of gentle gradation, such as sky and skin. 6 Picture Quality INTELLIGENT PEAk LED BACkLIGHT High contrast makes the image punchy and vibrant. Sony achieves spectacular contrast with the Intelligent Peak LED Backlight. This system varies backlight brightness according to the picture content. It shines brightly when the picture is bright, and can fall to black when the picture is black. An array of LEDs directly behind the screen divides the picture into numerous regions, each of which can be dimmed or boosted independently. In fact, individual segments can be boosted to roughly double brightness, for outstanding peak highlights. As a result, you'll see a powerful combination of intense highlights, bright whites and deep, rich, satisfying blacks. Intelligent Peak LED Backlight General Direct Type LED Backlight Picture Quality DyNAMIC EDGE LED BACkLIGHT High contrast makes the image punchy and vibrant. Sony achieves infinite dynamic contrast ratio with the Edge LED Backlight. This system adjusts backlight brightness according to the picture content. It shines brightly when the picture is bright, and can turn completely off when the picture is black. Dynamic contrast ratio equals the brightness of an all-white screen divided by the brightness of an all-black screen, which in this case is zero. In this way, dynamic contrast is effectively infinite. The Dynamic Edge LED system also improves static contrast, where black and white appear on the screen simultaneously. The system divides the screen into regions, each of which can be dimmed independently for powerful contrast within a single scene. As a result, you'll see an amazing combination of intense highlights, bright whites and deep, rich, satisfying blacks. In addition, high-performance light guides maintain uniform brightness across the face of the screen. Sony s Intelligent Peak LED Backlight uses local dimming and boost to achieve an infinite dynamic contrast ratio. Sony s backlight is also remarkably slim. (TV picture simulated. Direct LED backlighting tends to make for a somewhat thicker screen than edge lit LEDs. By replacing conventional light guides with advanced diffuser technology, Sony engineers were able to hold screen thickness to a remarkable 1-1/2 inches (3.7 cm). DRIVING 3D FROM THE LENS TO THE LIVING ROOM Just as Sony s involvement in high definition was total, Sony is helping drive 3D entertainment across the board. knowledge transfer from Sony s work on the sound stages of 3D Hollywood movies, the broadcast trucks of 3D HDTV sports and the projection rooms of 3D movie theaters gives Sony BRAVIA engineers a unique advantage in 3D HDTV design. Sony is empowering 3D from the studios of Hollywood and the arenas of pro sports to the local theater and the living room. 3D SOURCES 2011 will mark the launch of a world of 3D home entertainment. 3D Broadcasting. Over-the-air broadcasters will have the option of transmitting 3D. 3D Cable. Sony is working with ESPN on ESPN 3D and working with Discovery and IMA on the rollout of their planned 3D channel. 3D Satellite. DIRECTV has announced plans for three exclusive 3D channels. 3D Blu-ray Disc titles. If you liked 3D in the movie theaters, you'll love 3D on Blu-ray Disc. It delivers the highest picture quality for home 3D viewing: a full HD picture (1920 x 1080) for both left and right eyes. 3D Videogames. The PlayStation 3 game platform now supports 3D though you might need to update your PS3 s firmware via free online update. HOW BRAVIA 3DTV WORkS. To enjoy superb 3D at home, you ll need the following: 3D Content. 3D movies have enjoyed huge commercial success. This has created a powerful incentive for the television, home video, and videogame industries to jump in, providing 3D content. 3D Cabling. 3D requires a high speed HDMI cable, one that supports at least 10.2 Gbps (340MHz bandwidth). 3D Television. 3D Active Glasses. These are synchronized to the left and right images on the screen so that each eye only sees the intended picture. 3D active glasses can be supplied with the television or offered as an accessory required for 3D viewing. 3D Sync Transmitter. Active 3D glasses such as those used with BRAVIA HDTVs with 3D depend on an infrared sync signal, generated by a sync transmitter. This transmitter is built into all 3D capable TVs this year. 3D Home Theater System. (Recommended for 3D signal pass-through) While the depth effect of 3D is new to home entertainment pictures, depth has long been a fixture in home entertainment surround sound. Just as 3D pictures can place the subject in front of the screen or behind, a good home theater can immerse you, placing sounds anywhere in a 360 degree circle around you. Look for a system that supports high speed HDMI connections and Audio Return Channel. Sony s high frame rate technology enables the BRAVIA 3D HDTV to alternate rapidly between left-eye and right-eye images. Sony s active 3D active glasses include LCD shutters over each eye, synchronized with the television. This enables the left eye of the glasses to be open only when the left-eye image is displayed, and the right eye of the glasses to be open only for the right-eye image. Thanks to the persistence of human vision and the high frame rate of BRAVIA televisions, you get the effect of separate, continuous streams of pictures, one for each eye

11 Picture Quality Picture Quality FULL HD IN 3D There are two main strategies for home 3D viewing: active and passive 3D glasses. Flat panel televisions with passive 3D glasses use on-screen filters to polarize half the pixels for left-eye viewing and half the pixels for righteye viewing. This means that each eye will only be able to receive half resolution 3D, at best. Even if you re watching a 3D Blu-ray Disc that supports full HD to both eyes, a 3D television with passive glasses will only deliver half the resolution of the original picture to each eye. OPTICAL FILTER WITH PASSIVE GLASSES To display 3D, LCD shutters in Sony s active glasses alternate between left-eye and right-eye viewing. EVERy BRAVIA 3D HDTV IS ALSO A SUPERB HDTV BRAVIA HDTVs with 3D are fully prepared for those times when 3D is not on the air. 2D Viewing. Every BRAVIA 3D HDTV is a fully functional HDTV so you re ready for everything, including standard definition, high definition or 3D. 2D-to-3D Conversion. BRAVIA HDTVs with 3D will also convert conventional, 2D personal content into simulated 3D. The effect will vary, depending on the scene content. The conversion has three levels of adjustment, plus off. Passive Glasses Flat panel televisions with passive glasses cannot reproduce 3D in full HD resolution. To overcome this limitation, Sony chose 3D active glasses. These have LCD shutters that open in turn to enable lefteye and right-eye viewing. Because pictures for each eye are displayed in sequence, BRAVIA HDTVs with 3D can support Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution to both eyes. It s the highest 3D resolution available in consumer television. HIGH FRAME-RATE WITH ACTIVE GLASSES L and R frames need to be synced using IR transmitter. 12 Picture Quality 3D PICTURE QUALITy While 3D HDTV is still in its infancy, Sony s high-quality approach to 3D already stands apart. Bright images. To compensate for the light lost when the LCD shutters of the 3D active glasses are closed, Sony boosts the LED backlight in highly precise synchronization with the periods when the shutters are open. Minimum ghosting. High contrast in the LCD shutters of the glasses minimizes the unwanted ghosting that can occur when the left-eye sees the right-eye image or vice versa. you get crisp, vivid 3D. Sony also minimizes ghosting by precisely controlling the time interval when each shutter is open, so that each eye only sees the intended image. Long battery life. Sony glasses are powered by a highcapacity CR2032 battery with up to twice the battery life of some competing active 3D active glasses. Natural 2D-3D conversion for personal content such as digital pictures and home videos thanks to Sony s advanced algorithm. Graceful tonal gradation. Plasma televisions can sacrifice smooth transitions in tonal values when you switch into 3D mode. This can create unwanted banding or contouring on expanses of skin and sky. Sony LCD televisions deliver full tonal gradation in 3D. Wide viewing area. Sony s high-output infrared transmitter system uses multiple LEDs, for excellent coverage across your room. Picture Quality 3D SySTEM There s a huge difference between 3D 1 television and great 3D television. Some models can t deliver full resolution. Some exhibit 3D crosstalk or ghosting when the left eye image leaks into the right eye and vice versa. This problem can substantially degrade 3D enjoyment. Some 3D televisions exhibit motion blur. During right-only and left-only picture display, the system also performs Backlight Scanning, illuminating the backlight in horizontal bands. This promotes maximum picture sharpness with minimum motion blur. Shown at left, carelessly implemented 3D is easily degraded by image ghosting crosstalk between the left and right images. When off, the television appears to be a single, uninterrupted sheet of black glass, a sculptural presence in any room. When on, the picture emerges bright and vivid, thanks in part to Sony s OptiContrast panel. Another important component of the Monolithic Design is Sony s OptiContrast Panel. This replaces the air gap between the LCD and the glass with a carefully formulated resin. The resin reduces ambient light reflections, contributing to spectacular picture contrast. The OptiContrast panel also contributes to the uninterrupted sheet-of-glass look when the television is off. And the resin causes the image to appear to float on the surface of the glass when the television is on.
