Hype (15- & 30-Minute) Create an atmosphere of anticipation in the room through your lighting, music and interaction with the hosts or worship leaders. Begin the music before the audience enters. Choose highenergy music. Opening Music (30-Minute only optional for 15-Minute) Lead kids and parents in singing the following songs. You can use teen and kid singers on the stage to do motions to the songs and facilitate worship, but you can go as simple as a CD player with one of your hosts leading. You may want to introduce the motions to the audience at the beginning of the song. SFX Music Turn It Up from the Turn It Up CD SFX Music This Love from the Jump! 3 Welcome/Intro (15- & 30-Minute) Credible Host enters. Hello, and welcome to [name of your FX]. It s great to see all of you! This is the place where kids and parents come together to learn about a new Life App every month. A Life App is something that s part of who God is or that reflects a little piece of His character. We believe that God works these out inside us to change the world around us. How cool is that? Now, if we can just get [Comic Host s name] out here, I d like to show you the new Life App for this month. (CONT D) [Comic Host s name], what are you up to? Comic Host enters. He s wheeling the covered catapult. The chocolate bars are loaded in the catapult. Comic Host stops next to Credible Host. I m preparing for battle! For battle? What battle? Comic Host puts his hands on his hips. I have declared war on my neighbor! (Sighs.) I thought you had settled things with your neighbor. What was that problem again? They didn t like that I was training seals in my backyard pool. They said they couldn t sleep because the seals liked to play Marco Polo all night. Gee, I wonder why they didn t like that? Comic Host demonstrates by clapping his arms like a seal and making seal noises. I don t know! Anyway, this is my neighbor who lives across the street from me. 3
Ohhhh. And what s the problem with him? Every day he walks his dog around the neighborhood. And every night I come home to pooch presents on my lawn. Pooch presents? Yeah! You know hound mounds! Understood. Doggie donuts! Mutt muffins! Okay, okay, I think we get it. Have you tried talking to him? Oh, I ve tried. It s pointless though. Why? The dog doesn t understand English. Pffffft. Hello! Um, I meant the neighbor himself. Of course I ve tried that! But I still keep finding beagle bagels all over my yard! So, if it s a fight he wants, a fight is what he s gonna get! [Comic Host s name], that s not (interrupting) Stand back as I unveil my latest invention! I call it the BM#2! Or, as it s also known Comic Host takes the sheet off with a flourish. 4
the Dogapult! (CONT D) Dogapult? Don t you mean catapult? Why would I call it a catapult, when it s meant for Schnauzer schnausages? That would make me look foolish! Yeah, you don t want that. What? (to himself) Nothing. So, what are you planning to do with this Dogapult. Yeah, that. The next time that dog leaves any direct deposits in my yard, I m going to put it in my Dogapult Comic Host pulls back the catapult to launch it. (CONT D) and launch it back into my neighbor s yard! INCOMING, Sanderson! Whoa, whoa, whoa! [Comic Host s name], this is not the way to handle this! Credible Host stops Comic Host from launching it. Why not? He started it! I m just giving him a sample of what he s dished out! Comic Host tries to launch it again, but Credible Host stops him again. 5
[Comic Host s name], if you do do that Comic Host giggles. (CONT D) you re just going to make it worse. Trying to win this argument isn t going to get you anywhere. Comic Host puts his hands on his hips. Oh, we ll see about that! Okay, I know what we need to do. We need to reveal this month s new Life App right now. It ll help you, too. Comic Host starts to say something, but doesn t. (CONT D) All right, everybody. Make a drum roll on your legs and repeat after me. CG Life App Definition (CONT D) Peace is proving you care more about each other than winning an argument. Awesome job, everyone. Well, [Comic Host s name], what do you think? I think it doesn t apply to me. How can you say that? Cuz I don t give a rip about Scooby Doo-Doo! He s a furry fertilizer machine! Tell you what. I ll make you a deal. (Holds up Solution Spinner.) If we use the Solution Spinner to help you with this conflict, will you do what it says no matter what? Solution Spinner? 6
Yes. It s this month s widget. It s a game spinner that has six different approaches to dealing with conflict. Is it a deal? Comic Host thinks for a couple of beats and then reaches out to shake Credible Host s hand. Deal. But I call spinning it! Okay, [Comic Host s name]. Comic Host spins the Solution Spinner. They both watch it spin. Come onnnnnnn, Dogapult! It stops spinning and they both stare at it for a beat. Best out of three? (CONT D) No, no, no. You made a deal, and the Solution Spinner says, Walk away from a fight, and dismantle the Dogapult. Hey! It doesn t say dismantle it! Okay, I threw that in there. But you re going to walk away from this, to prove you care about your neighbor, right? Yeah, I guess so. Under one condition! (Sighs.) What is it? I wanna try out the Dogapult right here! It s already loaded and ready for launch! Loaded? With what? 7
Comic Host holds up a chocolate bar. A couple of chocolate bars. Can I launch them? Please, [Credible Host s name]? Please-ohplease-oh-please?! Okay! Just be careful, all right? Of course! Okay, everybody! Count this down with me. Ready? Three, two, one, launch! Comic Host launches the candy bars into the audience. (CONT D) Yes! It worked! Man, I bet it could have launched those canine cannonballs onto Sanderson s roof! That s a lovely picture. Now then, bring your Dogapult with you, and I ll help you take it apart backstage. They both exit with the catapult. SFX Music Clip from Atomic Dog by George Clinton (play the bow wow part a few times). 8
Media Time Video (30-Minute only) CG Discovery video from Get REEL 2.0, vol. 6 Rapid Response (30-Minute only) What s in the Bag? SFX Music Second verse of Papa s Got a Brand New Bag by James Brown Comic Host enters carrying a bag with a chocolate bar and Solution Spinner widget in it. Good morning, and welcome to a game we call What s in the Bag? Try saying that with me. (Leads audience.) What s in the Bag? Great job! I have something hidden in this bag that has to do with our Life App of peace proving you care more about each other than winning an argument. One lucky contestant will get the chance to try to guess what s in the bag. If you guess correctly, you win what s inside. Comic Host picks a parent contestant. (CONT D) Are you ready to play What s in the Bag? Okay, here s your first clue. It can be used as a flying projectile in certain circumstances. Contestant guesses. If the answer is correct, skip to Comic Host s last line. If the contestant needs another clue (CONT D) Need another clue? Okay, it s sometimes made of chocolate and some of them were launched into the audience a few minutes ago. Contestant answers correctly. (CONT D) That s right! It s a chocolate candy bar! Congratulations! You have won this chocolate bar! And as a lovely parting gift, you also get your own Solution Spinner! Comic Host thanks the contestant and exits. SFX Music Chorus of Papa s Got a Brand New Bag by James Brown 9
Word (script for 30-Minute) SFX Music Film noir music LIGHTING Sam Shovel lighting Note In Sam Shovel scripts, there should be a spot on one side of the stage that is Sam s monologue spot. At various times throughout the script he will step away from the other characters and talk to the audience. When he does so, play film noir music, dim the stage lights, and put a spotlight on Sam. Before today s Word begins, place the container with the water balloons, water gun, paintball gun, and NERF bat on stage. ANNOUNCER (V.O.) When you need help and you ve tried everything and I mean EVERYTHING there's one man you can call. You ll find him listed in the Yellow Pages between septic tank repair and sleep disorder treatment. He ll be ready to handle your case any time day or night because he always sleeps in his clothes. He's Sam Shovel, Private Detective. Sam Shovel enters and stands in his monologue spot. He s wearing a trench coat and fedora. Hello. I'm Sam Sam Shovel, Private Detective. I ll get right to the point cut to the chase get down to brass doorknobs! There s trouble a-brewin. It s brewin like barista at a long-haul truckers convention. Well, I aim to stop it! I ve been hearing that there s a new gang in town, and they re trying to take over. They re like a newlywed s mother-in-law or a flock of seagulls without the funny hairdos. Well, I ve put the word out that I m forming my own posse to stop them. SFX Knocking LIGHTING Stage wash SFX Fade music That was fast. (CONT D) Sam crosses and opens the door to reveal Isaac, dressed in biblical attire. (If possible, your actor should be a tall, strong man. 10
Can I help you? (CONT D) Hi, I m here to see Sam Shovel. My name is Isaac, the son of Abraham. Funny, you don t look like that guy on The Love Boat. On the what? Never mind. I m just too hip for the room. Come on in. Isaac steps inside. (CONT D) I m glad you re here to join me in fighting off this gang of marauders. Um, in a way I m here about that. But Well, if we get some more men like you in our group, that gang will scatter like my brother right before the dinner check comes. They ll see that they can t come around here and take over everything without a fight! Wait. You ve got it wrong. They don t want to take over everything. Let me explain. God blessed me so much that I had become very wealthy in the Land of Gerar, and the Philistines were getting jealous because of that. So some of them went and poured dirt into the wells that my father Abraham had dug. It stopped up the wells. That s SO like those Philadelphians to do that! No, it s Philistines, not Philadelphians. Anyway, King Abimelech finally told me that I had become too powerful, and I needed to move away from him. So I moved away. Moved away?! 11
Yeah. Packed up everything and left. I ll be right back. Sam crosses to his monologue spot. SFX Music Film noir music LIGHTING Sam Shovel lighting (CONT D) Moved away? I m not so sure I want this guy, Lunch Sack, Isaac. (interrupting) on my posse. Why didn t he stand his ground? It was fight or flee, and he fleed. He was gone faster than the donuts for visitors on Sunday morning. SFX Fade music LIGHTING Stage wash Sam crosses back to Isaac. (CONT D) Who does this King Big Mac think he is, making you leave? King Abimelech he s the king of Gerar. Anyway, I did what he asked, and I moved away to the Valley of Gerar. My servants dug the wells open that had been filled in earlier, and I gave them the same names my father Abraham had given them. Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold on there, imac! Isaac. You guys name your wells? 12
Yeah. Naming your wells that s crazier than using gum as a hair gel or naming a dinosaur after Keith Richards. May I continue? Oh, please do. My servants kept digging in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water. Unfortunately, some herders of Gerar came, and that s when the real trouble started. And it s trouble they ll get! Look at this arsenal that I ve collected. Sam takes Isaac over to the container. He takes out the water gun and a couple of water balloons. Check these out! (CONT D) Ummmm, I really don t think we need to use those. Are you kidding me?! Those philanthropists Philistines. will get soaking wet! And then their wet clothes will cause chafing! They ll waddle back to where they came from like penguins with arthritis. I really don t think those will be needed. Sam takes the bat out of the container and wields it like a sword, whipping it around as he makes noises as if the bat is cutting the air. He finishes 13
with the end of the bat barely touching Isaac s nose. He leaves it there as he talks. I am considered to be an expert at this. Like I said, those won t be necessary. Sam continues to softly poke the end of the bat around Isaac s face as he keeps talking. (CONT D) Anyway, these shepherds argued with my servants and said the well was theirs. So (slight pause) could you please stop doing that? Sam takes the bat away from Isaac s face with a flourish and acts like he s putting it in a sheath. Expert! Sooooo, I named the well Esek Of course you did. and we moved on to another place. My servants dug another well and the same thing happened. Ah-HA! So that s where you made your stand against those lepers from the garage! That s not what happened. First, they were shepherds from Gerar, not lepers from the garage. And no, we didn t make a stand there. We moved on. Sam picks up the water gun. If you d had some of these weapons of mass soaking, you wouldn t need to move on. 14
No, we didn t need those. We found another place and dug another well. But they showed up again, argued with us again, and claimed the well was theirs again. So THIS is where you No, we didn t. We moved on again. (interrupting) So you dug three wells, they claimed all three wells, and you walked away instead of trying to prove that YOU were right. Yeah, that about sums it up. Excuse me for a second. Sam crosses to his monologue spot. SFX Music Film noir music LIGHTING Sam Shovel lighting Well, well, well. (CONT D) Sam pauses for a beat as if he s going to keep talking. Then he turns and heads back to Isaac. SFX Fade music LIGHTING Stage wash (CONT D) See what I did there? Huh? Well, well, well? Yeah, I ve never heard that one before. 15
I just don t understand why your servants didn t stand there and prove they were in the right. That makes as much sense as an ice sculpture in the Sahara Desert or a book about how to read. Well, that won t happen again because I have my arsenal! Sam pulls the paintball gun out of the container. (CONT D) We ll fight them off with paintball guns until they look like a t-shirt from a Grateful Dead concert! No, that s okay. It s pretty simple, Sam. Other people are more important than winning an argument. In this case, walking away from a fight was the right thing to do. Yeah, that and a nickel will get you a lukewarm cup of Joe. After all of that, we ve ended up in a place where God has given us plenty of room and we ll do just fine. Be right back. Sam crosses to his monologue spot. SFX Music Film noir music LIGHTING Sam Shovel lighting (CONT D) Well, I still don t understand why Aflac Isaac. names his wells and why he didn t try to win the argument! Anyway, he said this peace thing works, so maybe I ll give it a try. I m Sam Shovel. SFX Fade music LIGHTING Stage wash They exit. 16
Storyteller enters. STORYTELLER Man, I don t know if I could ve handled all of that like Isaac did. I m not talking about how he handled Sam Shovel. I m talking about when King Abimelech told Isaac he was too powerful and had to leave. Isaac could ve argued and maybe used some of that power so he could prove he was in the right and stay put. But instead he chose to walk away from a fight. He cared more about others and making sure no one got hurt in a fight than he cared about winning the argument. That can be tough, especially when you just KNOW you re right! Like when you let your little sister borrow your book and she tears the cover well, you could blow up and yell at her. It IS your book, after all. But you can prove you care about her even when she drives you nuts by letting go of it. Let s say our Life App definition again. CG Life App STORYTELLER (CONT D) Peace is proving you care more about each other than winning an argument.. Let s pray. SFX Music Your prayer music STORYTELLER (CONT D) Dear God, thank You for proving how much You care for us by giving Your life to make peace with us. You made us and You know that choosing to let go of winning an argument is tough! Please help us to make peace and show that we care more about each other than proving that we re right. In Jesus name, amen! SFX Music Your Word music 17
Landing & Announcements (15- & 30-Minute) Letting go of the need to win an argument can be an incredibly difficult thing, especially when you just know that you re right. But sometimes it is the best possible way to show how much you care about others. So what do you when someone s pushing your buttons or your brother or sister is bugging you? Or what about when that person at work just won t get off your back? When that happens, in the moment, ask God for the strength to prove that you care more about others than winning an argument. That s our Life App. Say it with me. CG Life App (CONT D) Peace is proving you care more about each other than winning an argument. Sometime at dinner or in the car this week, discuss some of the things that bug you and make you want to fight back, whether it s from someone in your family or someone outside. Then help each other think through how you could prove you care about that person more than winning. Credible Host invites parents and kids back and promotes resources.
