1 Jimenez/1 Plan an Expedition DUE: 10/14 Explorers open our eyes to the connections between people, events and the past. The Mirriam- Webster Dictionary defines exploration as the looking at (something) in a careful way to learn more about it: to study or analyze (something). In language specific to the discipline of history, exploration is the travel over or through (a place) in order to learn more about it or to find something. Choose an explorer from The Age of Exploration and analyze their motives for exploration and their struggles (reading their journals as a primary source is recommended). Determine the main channels of trade that opened as a result of their voyage? Research the items which are currently traded along these channels, and following the modern trade routes, using current technologies, plan an expedition. You will create detailed maps of their actual voyage and your planned modern route. You must determine which items will be traded (research based on current main imports and exports) and the specific FOB (freight on board) port along with the port of delivery. You must determine the best time to sail using scientific analysis, cartography, funding needs, supplies, human resources, and management (leadership). Remember, your plan must be research based (you will create an annotated bibliography see sample) not only as to the explorer and their route, but also as to the 21 st century actualization of their voyage. Working in teams (or independently), you will create the expedition plan using whatever mediums or media you embrace; you are encouraged to make this a multi-medium and media project which shows the very best of your creativity and collaborative skills. You must be prepared to orally and visually present the voyage and expedition recommendations to the class. You may choose from but are not limited to the following list of explorers: Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, Juan Ponce de Leon, Ferdinand Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, John Cabot, Jacques Cartier, Henry Hudson. Reflect upon the funding needs for this modern voyage and write a detailed explanation of at least one page typed in proper MLA format (think of it as a business proposal for funding). A rubric is attached to help you ensure you have all the required components.

Reflection Consists of substantive analysis of funding needs, not simple superficial responses, with few or no errors in CUPS. Presentation Employs multimedium and/or media in visualization of voyage. Student(s) have command of all elements of the expedition. Overall Layout is visually appealing: organized, interesting, eye-catching, demonstrates creative use of color and design, and evidences deliberation and careful crafting.

4 Jimenez/4 THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY The following are the requirements for an annotated bibliography entry which is different from a works cited page. 1. The MLA heading with your name and class information appears on the first page only. Subsequent pages contain a header with your surname and the page number. 2. Give the annotated bibliography a title that identifies the common topic/historical figure that all the sources share. Note that you do not need to nor should you label this "Annotated Bibliography" since it's obvious from looking at the page that it is, in fact, an annotated bibliography. 3. Sources appear in alphabetical order by author surname or title. Note well that each entry begins with an MLA-style works cited citation. Check the specific source format information for details of the entry. 4. Annotations vary in length depending on the complexity of the source; however, annotations of even the longest sources are brief, but in three small paragraphs that each serve a different purpose: summary, evaluation, reflection. 5. Note the "inverse paragraph" format: The first line of each entry is flush left at 1 while subsequent lines are indented 1.5 inches. The right margin is not justified. The entire document is double spaced from the title to the last line. A SAMPLE for the first page and entry of an annotated bibliography follows.

New York: World Wide Books Inc., Print. Lamott's book offers honest advice on the nature of a writing life, complete with its insecurities and failures. Taking a humorous approach to the realities of being a writer, the chapters in Lamott's book are wry and anecdotal and offer advice on everything from plot development to jealousy, from perfectionism to struggling with one's own internal critic. In the process, Lamott includes writing exercises designed to be both productive and fun. (summary) Lamott offers sane advice for those struggling with the anxieties of writing, but her main project seems to be offering the reader a reality check regarding writing, publishing, and struggling with one's own imperfect humanity in the process. Rather than a practical handbook to producing and/or publishing, this text is indispensable because of its honest perspective, its down-to-earth humor, and its encouraging approach. (evaluation) Chapters in this text could easily be included in the curriculum for a writing class. Several of the chapters in Part 1 address the writing process and would serve to generate discussion on students' own drafting and revising processes. Some of the writing exercis-

6 Jimenez/6 es would also be appropriate for generating classroom writing exercises. Students should find Lamott's style both engaging and enjoyable. Make sure your sources are listed in alphabetical order, and that each source indents at only one (1) inch while all subsequent lines to the entry indent at one ½ (1.5) inches.
