1 Teachers: Lori Garbe AP Lesson Plans English IV Renaissance/Restoration ( ) Week of: October 29 th November 2nd, 2012 Week One Exemplar Lesson 02: Inquiry Writing Hamlet (13 days) Students further link comprehension of reading to related topics or direct literary analysis of the text. Connecting these threads culminates in a written paper, demonstrating synthesis of ideas, finding outside resources and selecting appropriate support from those sources, and following format for documentation. Monday, October Vocabulary Definitions Literary Terms Students will work on AP Multiple Choice Questions from Hamlet 3. Identify soliloquies that Hamlet speaks. Students will begin choosing which soliloquy they will memorize. May work in groups and create their own modern version of a soliloquy. 4. Students will continue reading the play Hamlet Act IV out loud by being assigned parts. 5. Study famous lines and soliloquies from Hamlet. HW: Students will work on their Topic B (College Essays) Rough Drafts. Tuesday, October AP Multiple Choice Worksheet Practice Questions from Hamlet - Acts I-III. 2. Students will continue reading Hamlet Act IV and complete questions. 4. Students will decide which one was their favorite and why...(lighting, wording, tone, character performance) 5. Students will get ideas to help them perform their own soliloquy (Dramatic Interpretation) HW: Work on Topic B College Essay Rough Draft. Wednesday, October Journal Do you think Hamlet is mad or pretending to be mad? EXPLAIN. 2. Students will continue reading Hamlet Act V. 2. Complete analysis questions over Acts IV for Hamlet. 4. Continue with analysis of Hamlet character analysis, study of soliloquies. 5. Students will continue to work on their soliloquies for presentations. HW: Soliloquies, Voc. Def., Final Draft Topic B Tuesday, November 6 1. Students will work on AP Questions from Hamlet. 2. Students will review their soliloquies from Hamlet, choosing one to memorize and perform in front of the class. 3. Finish reading Hamlet by Shakespeare; Act V. 4. Complete questions from Act V. 5. Students will continue working on their soliloquies with their groups. 6. Students will videotape their soliloquies. HW: Soliloquies, Voc., Final Drafts Topic B Wednesday, November 7 1. Students will write in their Journals. 2. Begin Open Ended Essay Review for AP Exam. 3. Students will read over sample essays and score them. 4. Students will continue videotaping their Soliloquies which are due next Friday. HW: Voc., Final Drafts Topic B Due Monday. Thursday, November 8 1. Students will write an Open Ended Essay over Hamlet. 2. Students may work on the essay in class or at home. It will be due Friday. 3. Students will finish videotaping their Hamlet soliloquies for the class. HW: Final Draft Topic B Due Monday. Friday, November 9 1. Vocabulary Quiz SAT 1 2. Students will read their SSR Novel. 3. Students will continue presenting their Hamlet soliloquies to the class. HW: Topic B Final Drafts College Essays Due Monday.

Collect Topic B Final Drafts HW: Voc Def./Soliloquies Tuesday, November The students will continue presenting soliloquies to the class. 2. Students will continue their Hamlet Movie Review. 3. Students will take notes over the movie for the Movie Review Analysis. HW: Voc. SAT 2/ Soliloquies Wednesday, November The students will continue presenting their soliloquy interpretations from Hamlet. 2. Students will finish their Hamlet Movie Review. 3. Students will continue taking notes over Hamlet for the Movie Analysis. (Soliloquies, acting, staging, lighting, etc and the effect the devices played in the performance) 4. Students will begin writing the Movie Review Analysis which is due Friday. Continue with the discussion over changes in the Restoration Period. 4. Read bio. Of Jonathan Swift pg Understand satire, irony, writer s stance pg 486, Eng. Lit. 6. The students will read A Modest Proposal - Swift, pg ; identify modest, irony, satire, connotations. Analyze speeches that have a tone of sarcasm in them or a use of satire. 4. Students will begin writing a speech to present over a topic of importance to them. Give out requirements for the speech write their own Modest Proposals. 5. Their must be a sarcastic tone, humor, and satire used in the speech. 6. Students begin brainstorming ideas for the Modest Proposal speeches. Tuesday, November The students will work on AP Multiple Choice Questions. 2. Begin reading Pride and Prejudice Chapters Read background of Jane Austen. Understand satire, irony, importance of marriage, proper etiquette. 4. Answer questions that follow the Chapters. Identify Satire, Irony, Theme. 5. Collect Resumes. 6. Students will continue working on their Modest Proposals. HW: Study Literary Term definitions Wednesday, November The students will write in their Journals. 2. Continue reading Pride and Prejudice Chapters , Complete Study Guide Questions. 4. HW: Study Literary Term definitions Tuesday, December 4 1. Review Pride and Prejudice Chapters Go over and complete Study Guide Questions. 3. Students will work on AP Multiple Choice Questions. 4. Collect/Present Modest Proposals. Wednesday, December 5 1. Students will write in their Journals. 2. Students will continue reading Pride and Prejudice, Chapters Answer Questions over chapters Begin to review for a test over Section 1 of Pride and Prejudice (Chapters 1-23). 5. Continue presenting Modest Proposals to the class. Thursday, December 6 1. Students will take a Timed Writing over the AP Poetry Prompt. 2. Students will write for 40 minutes and turn in their essays at the end of that time. Friday, December 7 1. Students will take a Vocabulary Quiz over SAT Words Students will finish presenting the Modest Proposals to the class. 3. Students will read their SSR Novels and may begin on their SSR Projects Open Ended Essay.
7 Restoration & 18 th Century ( ) Week of: December 10 th December 14 th, 2012 Week 7 Monday, December Students will take a test over Pride and Prejudice (Chapters 1-23) 2. Continue reading Pride/Prejudice (Chapters 27-30). 3. Go over Compare/Contrast Essay Timed Writing Poetry Prompt. 4. Work on SAT 5 Vocabulary Definitions. 5. Hand out information on Resumes for students to create. HW: Vocabulary definitions/resumes Tuesday, December Students will work on AP Multiple Choice Questions. 2. Understand satire, irony, parody, tone, and symbolism. 3. Continue reading/analyzing Pride/Prejudice (Chapters 31-35) in small groups to answer the Study Guide Questions. 4. Each group is assigned a chapter to read and analyze and complete the questions. Share with the class.
