2 Objectives: To be aware of the different types of books and genres. To know the basic ideas of visual literacy. To be able to motivate and engage children in reading.

5 What is a Literary Genre? A genre is a particular style or type of writing.

6 WHAT? Visual Literacy (VL) ability to send and receive message through visual images WHY? VL a tool to mainstream academic literacies of listening, speaking, reading and writing HOW? 1- Understand basic artistic elements and design features of picture books. 2- Use the scaffoldings and apprenticeship model of conversation.

13 TEXTURE Gives illusion of wood, cloth, stone, fur, cloth, etc

16 DESIGN AND MEANING IN PICTURE BOOK Tension- interaction between text and illustration; heightens interest Words in picture books Indicate how we are to interpret the emotional and narrative content of the pictures Point out cause-and-effect relationships Explain what is important and what is not

17 DESIGN AND MEANING IN PICTURE BOOK Page Layout/ Book Layout Most picture books are wider than they are high, suited to the narrative illustration. Characters tend to be taller than they are wider to give ample space for artist to depict the setting around the characters, expanding the narrative quality of the pictures.

19 Because pictures speak a thousand words Emergent readers can generate a story based on the images they see. Early readers can read their own verbal text. Independent readers can add details with plot, characters and setting.

21 How can we motivate and engage children to read books? - Select a suitable book that meets their ability The five finger rule -quick and easy way for your child to check if a book is suitable to read on their own.

22 FIVE FINGER RULE Use the following guidelines according to how many fingers they held up: 0 or 1 Most probably too easy for your child. 2 A good choice that will give your child a reasonable challenge and allow them to learn new words. 3 Your child might need some help, but still a good choice if they re up for a challenge. 4 May be too difficult for your child to read on their own. If you are on hand to give them help or read along with them it can be suitable, but if they are reading on their own, choose a different book. 5 Most probably a bit too advanced, try a different book.

23 How can we motivate and engage children to read picture books? Create a cozy corner at home for reading Be a reader yourself! (PARENT MODELLING) Be aware of some visual literacy skills so that they you can interact with your child more effectively Do not stop them from reading Interact with the child
