1 Sacramento Public Library Authority September 28, 2017 Agenda Item 4.3: Summer Reading Challenge and Lunch at the Library TO: FROM: RE: Sacramento Public Library Authority Board Christie Hamm, Youth and Literacy Services Manager Summer Reading Challenge and Lunch at the Library RECOMMENDED ACTION(S): Receive and File BACKGROUND The 2017 Summer Reading Challenge had another record-breaking year, thanks to the support of the Sacramento Public Library Foundation and the Friends of Sacramento Public Library. Summer Reading participants numbered 36,901, with 20,428 of those finishing by reading five or more books. Participants of all ages read 396,697 books over the course of the summer. These figures all represent an increase over 2016 numbers, and would not be possible without the tireless work of staff in all library locations. Youth Services librarians provided visits to 1,250 classrooms to promote the Summer Reading Challenge, reaching an audience of more than 40,000 students. This year, in response to community demand, the Library was able to offer a book prize for adults, thanks to the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library, which gave each adult finisher a coupon good for a free book from the Book Den warehouse. This helped to bring new customers and increased traffic to the Book Den. A media partnership with CBS and Wells Fargo helped to spread the word about Summer Reading with the Sacramento community. Spots promoting the Library and highlighting Summer Reading Challenge successes reached a wide audience. Partnerships also helped to bring Summer Reading to special populations. Residents of the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility had a program tailored to their needs, with 28 residents completing the program by reading a total of 405 books. This year, the Library began a partnership with the Sacramento County Jail, with 7 participants from one women s unit completing the program and earning a free book bag. A partnership with Councilmember Larry Carr and District 8 allowed Summer Readers under 18 in two libraries (Martin Luther King, Jr. and Valley Hi-North Laguna) the chance to earn free swim passes to the City Pool. Readers earned 457 swim passes, thanks to this initiative. Summer Readers shared many stories of their successes, which can be seen on the Library website, LUNCH AT THE LIBRARY 2017 For the fifth consecutive year, Sacramento Public Library provided free summer lunches for kids 18 and younger. This year, the program expanded to include 10 library sites, (Arcade, Colonial Heights, Del Paso Heights, Martin Luther King Jr., North Highlands, Rancho Cordova, Rio Linda, South Natomas, Southgate, Valley Hi-North Laguna) served by three food partners (Elk Grove Unified School District, Natomas Unified School District, and United Way). With funding from the California Library Association, the Library recruited two teen lunch coordinators

2 Sacramento Public Library Authority September 28, 2017 Agenda Item 4.3: Summer Reading Challenge and Lunch at the Library for each site, and offered a stipend to provide an incentive. The libraries were able to serve 10,761 meals, and also helped connect lunch customers to other library services. Survey feedback from families stated that this is a very welcome service which helped families stretch their limited budgets, and provided access to nutritious fresh healthy meals in a welcoming setting.
