1 Friends of the Cloverdale Library President s Message Susan Clark Dear Friends, Well, we started off the year with high hopes of having a refreshed library by now. The good news is that the delay has resulted in the Commission approving a bigger budget for the refresh. We have our remodel fund of $75,000. that can be used during the refresh and we will be looking for meaningful ways to spend those funds. At this point buying the end caps for the shelving seems to be a good use of our money. The Art Show in May was well attended as was the Artist s Reception. The Art Committee provided 3 very talented artist to display; thanks to Sharon Kozel and Nancy Burres for selecting the art and setting up the show. Thanks again to Mary Larson and Kat Hinzman for organizing the reception. For about a year we talked about buying a market shade tent to use for various library events. Jane Snibbe went down to Ace Hardware to purchase the shade tent and Will Jopson of Ace Hardware donated the shade tent to the library. We have already used the tent and plan to use it for the book sale. Big thanks to Will and Ace Hardware. The Board has completed the revision of the by-laws. In early October we will have copies available for members to read and we will send them out in an . The plan is to have a vote for approval at the General Meeting. The General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 4th. We will meet in the Forum Room at 6:30 pm. We had a good turn out last year and I hope we continue the trend. So, please attend! It is open to all Friends members and to anyone who believes in libraries. There is no cost but please register so the organizers have a count of those attending. We believe in the value of the library to the health of our communities and to the quality of life in Sonoma County. If you do too, please join us for the Library Advocacy Summit. The Summit is an all-day workshop led by John Chrastka. John is a nationally-recognized leader in libraries and the Executive Director of EveryLibrary, a national organization dedicated to building support for libraries. 2 Treasurer s Report Linda Clapp Planning is well underway for the annual book sale in October. The 2014 sale netted $2852, the best sale in our history; we hope this trend continues for 2015 as the book sale provides over 25% of the Friends income. Forest Chambliss, aka The BookForest, works with many of the county libraries posting your donated books on Amazon.com and this year s sales (and awaiting August s check) are over $1600. Sales of paperback books and magazines at the kiosks are up by 10% to $5500 and generate approximately 50% of the yearly income. Finances within the county and our city are slowly improving and so is the Friends balance sheet. We have approximately $14,000 in income this year and $13,500 in expenses. Last fall, the Library put a tax request to the public and all Friends groups were asked to assist with expenses associated with an election. This summer, the Sonoma County Library management shifted how they track branch expenses and asked that our Library Manager submit a twelve month request for all programs supported by the Friends. Although our fiscal year is September 1 August 31, we have sent the first payment toward upcoming programs. Keep watch for posters announcing upcoming Saturday programs. Each year, money is transferred to the investment fund at Edward Jones where we hold a mix of CDs, municipal bonds and mutual funds. Growth has been slow the last three year, with interest rates hovering near 1%, but the account has increased to over $75,000. These funds will be used at some point for library remodel or expansion expenses. When the carpet is replaced and the shelving retrofitted to withstand earthquakes this fall, the Friends will be adding end caps to every row increasing display and shelving space. Books, Books, Magazines & Volunteers When you stop by the Library, doesn t matter what day, you ll find Friends volunteers busy at work stocking paperbacks, hardbacks and magazines. Sherian Coovert with the help of Linda Silva, Betty Kroseze and Sally Evans work a couple of days a week to sort donated hardback books and to keep the hardback book shelves in the lobby full. For the paperback kiosk, Ann Wilson is helped byjean Bennetts,Andrea Bergman, Mary Ann Hallock and Mary Larson. Jane Snibbe, a longtime paperback volunteer retired this year. Thanks Jane for your many years of paperback sorting. Have you notice the new arrangement for the paperbacks? Trade books are now shelved with the mass market paperbacks. We have drop boxes for books at Ace Hardware and at the Cloverdale Senior Center. Freya would like to remind people that when donating magazines recent issues sell the best. Freya has two new volunteers to help her with magazines. Jennifer Weiss and Lynette Chandler, We can also sell any unwanted 2016 calendars that you might get in the mail. Please remember when donating - items in good condition recent magazines AND please drop off at the Library during open hours. Penny Navone, the volunteer coordinator will be calling, rounding up volunteers to work the book sale in October. When she calls, please say yes. 3 From the Branch Manager Cindy Wilson In last fall s newsletter, I shared the exciting news that we were getting new carpet and updated shelving that is seismically safe. We have been patiently waiting since then. The long wait is because it was decided that it was foolish to tear apart the building for that work without doing other things necessary to update the Library. The Library Commission allocated more funds in this year s budget for that purpose and we anticipate the work will begin this winter. Thanks to the Friends, we are looking forward to offering an introductory computer class in October. This will be taught by one of your members, Art Trujillo, and will fill a real need that we see in our community. We are also putting together an adult conversation class for English language learners who want a comfortable, no pressure place to practice their speaking skills. Several of your members have expressed interest in being trained to facilitate the class. The next step will be training provided the Library s Adult Literacy Program. Not only do the Friends work hard to raise money for the Library to use for materials and special programs, but they also give of their expertise and time to support our mission. Children s Services: The Friends sponsored many wonderful programs for children this year: Jeremy the Juggler at Halloween; Star Tom s Sing-along for the preschool set; our ever-popular Gingerbread House program and a theatre production of the Christmas Carol over the holidays; and Uncle Jer s Traveling Bee show this last spring. None of these would have happened without your support. We just concluded a wonderful Summer Reading program. We kept 225 children reading over the summer with our Super Hero themed program take that, infamous Summer Slide! Participants also enjoyed weekly family programs and preschool storytime. For the first time the Library was also a site for Lunch at the Library. This was a collaboration between the Library and the Redwood Empire Food Bank to fill the summer gap for children who usually qualify for free lunch at school. It was entirely staffed by volunteers, several of whom are members of the Friends. Thank you for everything you do! Lucinda (Cindy) Wilson, Branch Manager PAGE 3

4 Adult and Teen Services Phil Hoeft, Adult Services First and foremost I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all the Friends your support makes much of what we do possible. Reflecting on this past year I can hardly believe how fast the time has flown it s certainly been a busy summer at the library! We hosted our first-ever Adult Summer Reading program and it was great to see the enthusiasm of our 60 participants. Several wonderful prizes were handed out, including the grand prize gift certificate to Tranquility Massage and Spa! This program was met with much enthusiasm and we look forward to continuing it again next year. We also hosted our annual TeenRead this summer, which not only encourages teens keep up the reading habit over the summer, but provides unique opportunities to explore crafts and creative endeavors at the library as well. Throughout the rest of the year we offered a variety of other stimulating events. Some of the highlights for me were musical performances by Chaskinakuy (Andean village music) and The Peter van Gelder Group (Sitar music of India), and talks by Gary Beaudoin (Navajo weaving) and Laura Kohl (Jonestown survivor). We ve got some great performances lined up for the fall and we ll be getting information about those out as soon as we have dates confirmed. I hope you find our offerings appealing, but please know that I am always open to suggestions. Is there a type of performance you would like to see in the library? Something you want to learn about? My partner and I moved to Cloverdale 15 years ago and love the quiet peace we have found here. The Library is part of it all. My career in libraries began with a little lending library in the local Market Basket run by my grandmother. I was four and my job was to follow the older ladies around, holding their books; then I could stamp them as they checked out. A year ago, I was appointed to the Sonoma County Library Commission representing Cloverdale Regional Library. The learning curve has involved being on several Committees By-laws (ad hoc), Finance, Revenue Enhancing, and the Public Relations - the Library Director s Community Outreach Group. I finally feel like I understand enough to do the work needed and what a pleasure it is.
