8 Question Character Descriptions Jennifer ran in the morning. In the morning, Jennifer ran at Setting The lovely, green park slowly came into my sight. The old library was filled with books of every kind. Who, did what, when? Humorous: I didn t mean to drive my teacher crazy, it just happened that way. Character Descriptions There once was a small boy called Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge and what s more, he wasn t very old either. Why are you eating a tarantula? my little sister asked. I unwrapped my sandwich, opened my notebook, and stared helplessly at the blank, white pages. Sound Effects (onomatopoeia) Crash! I knew I was in trouble as soon as I heard that sound. Tick, tick, tick the clock kept moving even though I wasn t. Don t you think every boy deserves to have a dog of his own? What was that noise? Character Actions Character thoughts I was a ten-year-old girl who felt all alone with no one to play with me.

18 Johnny Appleseed planted apple seeds all over the Midwest. Johnny Appleseed wanted to help his neighbors, and he did exactly that. Kind, thoughtful, and loving, Johnny Appleseed was trusted by all the forest animals. Quickly, quietly, Johnny Appleseed tiptoed near the fawn and mother deer. Behind the old barn, Johnny found a sack of seeds large enough to plant a 1000 trees!

19 As Johnny Appleseed planted his trees, people smiled and cheered him on. Johnny Appleseed, planter of appleseeds, was famous throughout the West. L.5 Sentence Variety Handbook Slowing his horse, Johnny Appleseed looked to see how he could help. Although only ten years old, Johnny Appleseed could wrestle with a bear and not get hurt. Planting all the apple trees is what Johnny Appleseed is remembered for today. If you want to read a great story, read about Johnny Appleseed!

(at least 2 sentences) #3 Closing Do I have a closing paragraph that has a take away which explains what this story meant to me and what I learned? (at least 2 sentences) #4 Transitions Do I have transitional phrases at the beginning of a new event and some #5 Supporting Details #6 Descriptive words & phrases #7 Emotions and Reflections #8 Dialogue or My Thoughts #9 Punctuation Capitalization Spelling #10 Grammar Correct verb tense transitions embedded within the paragraphs? Do I have supporting details for one or some events that give a step by step account about something that happened? Do I have adjectives or adjective phrases to describe people, places and events? Did I add figurative language: simile, metaphor, hyperbole, or personification? Did I use specific words and phrases? Do I tell about how a character thinks or feels? Did I use some media questions to make sure I show not tell how the person was feeling? Do I use dialogue (what a person said) at least twice in the story? Did I use dialogue when 2 people respond to each other? Did I add what I thought? Do I capitalize all proper nouns and beginning of sentences? Is my spelling correct, especially high frequency words. Did I use the correct punctuation with my dialogue, sentence endings, use of commas, etc. Do I use the correct verb tense (like all past tense verbs) in my story, unless I am writing dialogue? Does my subject and verb agree in each sentence? Total = 20 pts. 2 pts. 2 pts. 3 pts. 2 pts. 2 pts. 1 pt. 1 pt. 2 pts.
