1 Dear Parents World Book Day Matt Buckingham shows his sketch book and explains to the children how he goes from an idea to a published book. The photographs above show the children listening avidly to our visiting illustrator and author, Matt Buckingham. He came to join us to celebrate World Book Day and explained to the children how his sketch books evolve from the tiniest idea of a potential story in a thumb nail picture to the finished book. The children were inspired and went home that day practising their artistic and literary skills. The FODs Quiz Night last Friday was a great success. The atmosphere was competitive but entertaining and the Year 1 parents were crowned the winning team. A huge thank you must go to Alissa and her team of wonderful reps for organising the evening from devising the devilish questions to the Spring flower arrangements and very generous raffle prizes. Rob Walton was a superb question master, easily throwing the heckling into touch whilst preserving his control and wry sense of humour... a great evening and one not to be missed the next time. We have a young volunteer currently working in the Nursery called Flora. Next month she is going out to Zimbabwe to work with an organisation called Progressio, an international development charity, where she will be helping poor and marginalised people. Flora spent the weekend baking to raise money towards getting out to Africa and we all thought she did an amazing job and raised 85. Thank you everyone for supporting her. Red Nose Day is tomorrow and we do want to raise as much as we can to help children here in the UK and in Africa. To do this the children can come to school looking funny for money and popping 1 (or a donation) in the collection box. We also have a limited edition of the Dunannie Joke Book ( 2) filled with masses of jokes that are sure to make you smile. Please come to school with lots of cash to support this brilliant charity! FRIENDS OF DUNANNIE Thank you so much to everyone who came to the quiz night. It was fun and we managed to raise lots of money. Thank you to everyone who donated prizes for the raffle which raised 350: Zara Merricks, Jane Parnell, Lucy Rose, Jo Russell, Trish Sterling, Marcelle Delahaye Camping, Anna Lobbenberg and Lucy Freeborough. Forgive me for my Oscar thanking here but so many people contributed to make the evening run so smoothly: Anna Lobbenberg for question writing and Nic Lobbenberg for organising the drinks. The class reps for selling tickets, Joe and the kitchen staff who cooked us a great curry, Tracey who is always happy to help with what needs doing, Jo for marking the maths questions! and for creating the round about her. Ruth Tarrant for the maths questions, they were truly fiendish. Rob Walton for his lovely question reading. Finally, everyone who helped clear up at the end of the evening. We could not believe how quickly it was all done. So thank you.

5 NEWS FROM BEDALES ARTS Dunhurst s exuberant and accomplished Art & Design exhibition runs at Bedales Gallery until 24 March (but is closed this Saturday 14 March). Opening hours are Mon-Fri 2-5pm and Sat 10am 1pm. There is a noble tradition of serious, important ideas being put across with humour and playfulness. The Origin of Species, written and performed by John Hinton and visiting the Olivier Theatre next Tuesday evening, 17 March, does this for Evolution. It s a show packed with big ideas, terrible puns, brilliant physical comedy and six cracking original songs about everything from blasted boring barnacles to the perils of marrying your cousin. Witty, clever, absurd... Comic genius... Grown-ups will love it. Kids will adore it. A gem. (Broadway Baby). Tickets 10 / 8 conc. The following week takes us into a pre-darwinian age. The Spring Concert in the Quad on Wednesday 25 March offers a wonderful opportunity to engage with Handel s majestic oratorio Messiah, directed by Nicholas Gleed, in a performance carefully representative of all three sections of the work. Well over eighty musicians drawn from the whole school community will take part and most of the soloists will be current We are delighted to offer a few remaining pieces from the Emma Bridgewater Pop-up shop at the Fundraising Lunch last Saturday. 100% of the proceeds are in aid of the Art & Design building. 6 On Saturday 7 March a fundraising lunch, hosted by Emma Bridgewater and Sophie Conran, was held in the Bedales Dining Room to raise funds for the Art and Design building. Guests were greeted by former parent, David Deane, with a glass of wine or elderflower cordial and were able to browse a wonderful selection of pottery and kitchenware designed by Emma Bridgewater and Sophie Conran in Pop-up shops, before eagerly taking their places (and goody bags!). A delicious lunch served of Ottolenghi inspired free range chicken followed by blood oranges with rosemary and maple syrup was served on Bridgewater crockery by a student team, assisted by Matthew Rice and Keith Budge. Over coffee served in Conran cups, Emma and Sophie gave a fascinating talk on their lives in home design, which inspired many questions from the guests. A spectacular gallon sized feather and egg Emma Bridgewater teapot and 20 baby mugs took pride of place on the raffle table, along with other fantastic prizes including 2 Sophie Conran Champagne Coups.
