2 Formulating Implied Main Ideas Implied Main Idea the point the author makes about the topic by giving information needed to understand it but not stating the main idea directly as one sentence. The reader must infer (understand) the main idea and formulate a sentence that expresses it. The formulated main idea must include the topic of the passage It must contain the author s most important point about the topic It must be a complete sentence (subject/verb combo + independence) Comprehension Monitoring Question: What is the most important point the author wants me to infer from the information given?

4 Example Each person is born into a particular society that has its own particular culture. At an early age, children begin to learn many aspects of this culture, such as language, standards of behavior, and beliefs. They also begin to learn many of the group s values concerning judgments of good and bad, proper and improper, and right and wrong. This learning continues into and throughout adulthood as people internalize, accept, and identify with their group s way of living. This feeling is called ethnocentrism. It is the basic inclination to judge other cultures in terms of the values and norms of one s own culture.

These sentences must be combined in order to express the main idea completely. 7 Example Tastes we all have them. You prefer certain styles of art, certain kinds of food and clothing, certain ways of decorating your room. The list could go on and on. We can t really say why we prefer rock to Mozart, burgers to pate, jeans to neatly pressed slacks. Tastes simply seem to be part of us, our individual selves. But tastes are also a part of culture, which is a broader social phenomenon.

10 Example Unfortunately, pesticides often kill plants and animals other than the pests they are intended for. Pesticides also pollute water systems. Over time, some pests develop immunity to frequently used pesticides and, therefore, more and more pesticides must be used. Some pesticides such as DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane) and its relatives can remain in the environment for many years beyond the time necessary to do their intended job. Some pesticides have even been linked to cancer and other health problems in humans.
