1 MARIETTA MIDDLE SCHOOL Indian information Volume 2, Issue 3 October MMS Spotlight teacher For the October issue, we chose Coach Appelman. Coach Appelman coaches Cross Country, Track, and Elementary Basketball. He also teachers 6th grade Health and Weightlifting. Why do you coach? I love sports and I love competing. Coaching is the best of both worlds. It also gives me an opportunity to work with kids and hopefully be a positive influence on them. How do you like Marietta? I love Marietta. It is a very supportive town that is hungry for success. I also really enjoy the faculty. They are great at their jobs and fun to be around. What else would you do, if you weren t a coach? I d love to be a sports commentator or something along those lines where my job is to follow sports. What motivates you to coach? Competition and getting to work with students. What is your proudest moment as a coach? That s tough. There are a lot I m proud of, but I guess both teams willing State Championships this year is as good as it gets. If you count JH All-Star, Marietta won 3 out of 4 State Championships. The JH boys came in 2nd. That s a great year for the Marietta Indians. We, as a Newsletter staff and Middle School, would like to congratulate Coach Appelman and his HS girls and boys Cross Country teams for winning the 2015 Oklahoma State Cross Country Championship. This is the third year in a row for the girls to take state, and the first for the boys! We are very lucky to have Coach Appelman as a part of Marietta Athletics and Marietta Public Schools. Article by Vanessa Aldaba Photo submitted by C. O Connor Words to live by... Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple. Haunted house If you re looking to have some scary fun this Halloween, you should stop by the Marietta Haunted House. The haunted house will be located at the Love County Fair Building this Friday (October 30th) and Saturday (October 31st). The cost for the haunted house are as follows: 10 and under $5 11 and up $10 Each year the Marietta Fire Department puts on a Spooktacular Haunted House! Right after dark is when the clowns and ghost come out. There is no set closing time. It will take approximately 20 minutes to get through the entire haunted house...well.unless you get lost...we hope to see you there! There may be a few treats, but mostly tricks. Happy Halloween! 2 P A G E 2 I N D I A N I N F O R M A T I O N October: bullying prevention month Everyone knows that October is breast cancer awareness month, Courtesy of broadside.dresden.us but it seems like no one really acknowledges that it s bulling awareness month too. I would like to shine some light on it. Now believe it or not, there are bullies everyone, but they don t always appear as the common movie cliché where someone taunts you and steals your lunch money. It s a bit more subtle, as it can happen to you in forms of friends and peers in general. I m pretty sure everyone has sunk to the level of talking bad about someone behind their back. I know I have, sadly. If you have, then you have officially bullied someone. But what they don t know doesn t hurt them, right? Technically, no, until your words are mysteriously released and someone gets offended. With this, you re mad at who told, someone s mad at you, and you ve punctured someone s selfesteem. Like I said earlier, bullying is every- where. Now, how open it is can vary. It usually doesn t scream, HELLO! THIS IS BULLYING!!, but it s also not hard to find. Sometimes it s easy because everyone knows, a.k.a. rumors. Or it s just a few people. In some cases, bullying occurs inside the person. We are our own bullies, and usually the most hurtful. We are our own reason to feel bad. I ve never liked the idea of When we feel insecure about ourselves we notice or point out the flaws in others. It doesn t quite make sense, does it? It s certainly not fair. Why would we feel bad about ourselves anyway? Is it just a big cycle? Someone talks about us, we feel insecure, then we talk bad about said person? Thus inflicting the cycle back upon them? Why though? It s just a downward spiral of low selfesteem and hurt feelings. Does it really make us feel better? Saying bad things doesn t make us Someone will listen and help. Until then, you are loved and important. Remember that, Kylie S. smarter, or more attractive. It definitely doesn t make us a better person. I was so happy I could do an article over this. I know we typically hear about bullying in some classes a few times a year, and how we shouldn t and we need to report it. But there is still so many little branches that it can go into that I wish I could talk about in this article, but that would take a lot of paper. My point is, please be careful about what you say and do. You could potentially damage someone s self-esteem and cause them to question their self worth. Please speak up if you are being bullied or someone you know is. Someone will listen and help. Until then, you are loved and important. Remember that. 3 V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 3 P A G E 3 Movie review The Martian This month s movie review is about the movie by the name of The Martian. This is a movie Monica Flores just recently saw, and she seems to really like it and/or found it interesting. A three sentence summery of the entire movie, provided by Monica: He talks to a camera a lot as if it is his buddy. - Monica F. NASA leaves one of their astronauts on Mars, without many things to survive. They do all they can do to bring him back with China s rocket. He becomes famous when he arrives back to Earth. Why do you like it? It was really good. If I said something, ya ll wouldn t understand. Why should others go check it out? It s really funny. The character is smart and has a lot of humor in him. He talks to a camera a lot as if it is his buddy. Article by Amelia Lawson ) Song review Happy I interviewed Cole Foster, because I know she listens to good music. I think she picked a good song. It is a good song to listen to because it keeps you Courtesy of google.com happy! It is very easy to learn the lyrics too. I like the song Happy by Pharell Williams because of the way it sounds, Cole said. She particularly liked the lyrics...because I m happy. 8 V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 3 T h a n k you Thank you Mr. Oakley. He has been going to school and teaching here at Marietta. He has been going non-stop. Thank you! Together We Achieve Article by Aaliyah Garcia P A G E 8 ADVICE COLUMN Have you ever needed advice, but you were too scared to ask? You thought you would get made fun of for wanting help, or that no one would understand? Now you can ask questions, get advice, and no one will know it s you! In the library, there will be a box with slips of paper beside it. You can write anonymous questions and get advice/answers from your peers in the next newspaper. Advice suggestions Q: Why are guys so rude? Suggestion: They aren t always rude. They can be, but so can everyone. They may have just had a bad day or didn t think of it as being rude. Suggestion: Not all guys are rude. If a guy is being mean to you, there s a change that he likes you. Maybe that guy is having a bad day, and is not usually rude. Q: How do I get a girl to like me? Suggestion: Just by yourself. If she is worth your time, she should accept who you are. Respect girls and don t hurt their feelings and compliment her. Suggestion: Solution #1 If you like a girl, then start talking to her and try to get her number. Solution #2 Get some lines and whenever she s around, drop them. Finally, look at her and say, Sorry, I m bad at pick-up lines. Solution #3 Buy her a Starbucks gift card. Q: Someone continues to spread rumors about me. Everyone knows they aren t true, but what can I do to make them stop? Suggestion: If everyone knows they aren t true, then just try to ignore them. They just want a reaction out of you. Suggestion: Don t give in. Show that you and your friends (true friends) don t and will never believe the rumor. The person feeds off of your sadness, so show that you don t care. Q: How can I help my friend who lies all of the time? Suggestion: Just try to help them realize that lying is wrong and doesn t help anything. Suggestion: Build up their self confidence. Teach them that lying solves absolutely nothing. Prove them wrong in a lie and show that their live improved nothing.
