1 FirstNews Issue th -23rd January 2014 ENGLAND Light show spotted The aurora borealis was seen in parts of Britain earlier this month. The coloured waves of light are caused by atoms high in the Earth s atmosphere colliding with charged particles from the sun, and are also known as the Northern Lights. The lights were brighter this time because a solar flare erupting from the sun sent more radiation than usual towards the Earth. 6. YORKSHIRE Dog blows up house Zeus the greyhound cross blew up his owners house after he chewed on a can of deodorant. As the dog chomped down on the can it caused the contents to spray out and be ignited by the heat from a nearby lamp. The explosion caused 2,000 worth of damage but luckily no-one, or the dog, was injured. 3. ABERDEENSHIRE Seal set free A grey seal found trapped in netting on the beach of Forvie National Nature Reserve has been successfully returned back to the sea. After being alerted to the situation by a member of the public, officers from the Scottish SPCA were able to cut the seal free and watch him return to the sea. 1. CHRISTCHURCH Trees saved Seven trees in Druitt Gardens have been saved from felling by one vote. Developers hoped to build retirement flats on the land but, after 450 objections, planning committee councillors voted six to five to save the trees. NEWS IN NUMBERS 1 billion pounds has been taken from British bank accounts in one year by cybercriminals, according to government research. It also revealed that one in five adults say they have lost at least 500 from online scams or unsecure websites. 3.4 million pounds is the amount CANTERBURY Girls to make history Sixteen girls aged between 12 and 16 are to make history by becoming the first girls choir at Canterbury Cathedral after more than 1,000 years of male-dominated singing. The choir will make their public debut at Evensong on 25 January. 5. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE Royal flight drama Air accident investigators have revealed that a helicopter carrying the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall was forced to make an emergency landing at Denham Aerodrome. The royal couple were on their way to Wales last year when the aircraft started to veer to one side. Luckily the pilot managed to land safely and the royals completed their journey by car. the North Sea storm surge is costing councils in the east of England. 7-year-old Adam Smith from Sunderland saved his grandfather s life when he was having a heart attack. Adam helped his grandad lie down, called 999 and looked after his little sister until help arrived.

7 The teacher answers are intended to provide a guide as to the AF strand of the question and possible responses from pupils working at different levels. In the level 4/5 answers we try to provide the most complete answer possible in order to provide teaching points when discussing the answers with pupils. 1) What links all the stories in this section? (The map is a clue!) AF7 relate texts to their social, cultural and historical traditions L3 simple connections between texts identified All these stories are from Great Britain: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland. 2) Fill in the gaps in this table: L4 identifying relevant points L5 most relevant points clearly identified (from different places in text) Place Headline This story is about... Yorkshire Dog blows up house A greyhound called Zeus caused an explosion by chewing on the wrong thing. Buckinghamshire Royal flight drama A Prince and Duchess had a helicopter emergency last year. Aberdeenshire Seal set free A trapped seal was rescued from a beach in Scotland. Christchurch Trees saved Developers are disappointed, but seven trees avoid the chop. Canterbury Girls to make history The first girls choir to sing at Canterbury Cathedral will perform on January 25th. 3) What is the aurora borealis and what is its other name? Coloured waves of light [direct quotation] Northern Lights L4 identifying relevant points The aurora borealis is a natural light display in the night sky. It looks like waves of different coloured light. It is caused by particles from the sun hitting the Earth s atmosphere. Its other name is the Northern Lights 4) Look at the news from Yorkshire. What common household item almost blew up a house? A can of deodorant 5) How did the explosion happen? A dog bit on a can of deodorant and it exploded. L4 identifying relevant points A dog called Zeus chewed on a can of deodorant. The gas inside the can sprayed out and a nearby lamp ignited it and caused an explosion.
8 6) Look at the news from Christchurch. Can you explain why one vote saved the seven trees? AF3 deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from texts L3 simple inference Because it was six to five. L4/5 - more complex inference with explanation One vote saved the trees because councillors took a vote on the proposal and five councillors voted for the plan and six councillors voted against it. This meant the vote was so close that just one vote decided whether the plan was given the go ahead, or not. The last vote went against the plan and the trees were saved. 7) Look at the News in Numbers stories. Find two statistics (number facts) which might put you off shopping or banking online. L4 identifying relevant points (- both correctly identified and explained) 1. 1 billion has been taken from British bank accounts by cyber criminals in one year. 2. One in five adults say they have lost 500 from online scams or shopping on unsecure websites. 8) Several of this week s stories tell of narrow escapes. Choose three stories which include this theme and explain the narrow escape. AF3 deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from texts L3 simple inference (If stories below are chosen correctly with little explanation.) L4/5 - more complex inference with explanation Any from: 1. Dog blows up house: a dog called Zeus blew up his owner s house by biting on a spray can, but amazingly no one, not even Zeus, was hurt. 2. Royal flight drama: The Prince of Wales s helicopter had to make an emergency landing last year after it started steering strangely, but no one was hurt. 3. Seal set free: A grey seal was found trapped in a net on a beach in Scotland, but the SPCA managed to cut it free and the seal was fine. 4. Adam Smith s grandad had a heart attack but Adam managed to save his life by calling ) All Home News stories are written and structured in the same way. Writers follow a set of rules called a style guide. Can you write down all the rules that writers must follow? AF4 identify and comment on the structure and organisation of texts, including grammatical and presentational features at text level Home News Rules for Writers All Home News stories must They all have a title. They all have a place. L4/5 various features identified with explanation Home News Rules for Writers All Home News stories must be written in one paragraph. have a headline which is very short (3 or 4 words). have a heading which is the place that the news item comes from. This place must be in capital letters. All specific places must have a number that matches a number on the map, to show the location of the place.
9 10) What important rule do all the News in Numbers stories follow? AF4 identify and comment on the structure and organisation of texts, including grammatical and presentational features at text level The first sentence must start with a number. 11) Using what you have just learnt, can you rewrite the News in Numbers story which starts 7-year-old Adam Smith as a Home News story? AF4 identify and comment on the structure and organisation of texts, including grammatical and presentational features at text level & AF2 - L3/L4 identifying obvious/relevant points AF4 - L4 some basic features identified - if the structure of place, headline and story has been attempted. Sample answer: Sunderland 7-year-old hero Adam Smith saved his grandfather s life by calling 999 when he had a heart attack. He helped his grandad lie down and looked after his little sister until the ambulance arrived. 12) The front page story of a newspaper is used to sell the newspaper: it is the story that can be seen when the paper is on display in the shops. A story might be picked for the front page because it is particularly interesting to readers of the newspaper, because it is surprising, funny or just because it is a very important news story. If you had to pick one of these stories to be the front page story, which would you pick, and why? AF3 deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from texts & AF7 relate texts to their social, cultural and historical traditions L3 Answers similar to: I would pick the story about the dog blowing up the house because I love that story / it s really funny. L4/5 Answers which attempt to explain why the choice would make a good front page story, e.g.: I would pick the story about the dog blowing up the house, because it s a really funny story. I think that that if children saw that on the front page they would be tempted to pick up the paper to find out more and might buy it. I would pick the story about the Northern Lights because being able to see the Lights so far south is a very unusual event. Such an unusual event should be front page news. It might have great pictures to go with it too, which would look attractive. I would pick the story about the 7-year-old-boy saving his grandad s life, because this is a children s newspaper and I think readers would find that a dramatic and fascinating story. It if was on the front page it might encourage more people to choose the newspaper.
