In the story, Lara is very interested in Egypt. When she was working at a museum, she started hearing strange noises. She thought she heard the Egyptian prince, Nefra. But Prince Nefra died thousands of years ago... In my opinion, this is a great book! I read it because I was doing a school project about Egypt. It was really exciting. Amy (aged 15) I really enjoyed The Haunted School by R. L. Stine. This book is about a boy called Tommy Frazer. When Tommy s family moved to a new house, he started going to a different school. One day, Tommy was sitting in the classroom when he heard children crying, but he couldn t see anyone. Was his new school haunted? I think that this story is really scary! I read it because my sister gave it to me for my birthday. Jake (aged 14) At the moment, I m reading The Unseen by Richie Tankersley Cusick. The main character in this book is Lucy. Lucy s mother died, so Lucy went to live with her aunt. One day, Lucy was walking in the town when someone started following her. She wanted to escape, so she ran into the cemetery... I borrowed this book from my school library. It s a very exciting story. Lola (aged 16) 1 Amy s favourite book is about an Egyptian prince. 2 Barbara Steiner wrote The Haunted School. 3 Jake s sister gave him The Haunted School for Christmas. 4 The Unseen is about a girl called Lucy. 5 Lola bought The Unseen at a bookshop. 9 Read the text. Then write true (T) or false (F). The rainforests Did you know that some rainforests are older than dinosaurs! some trees in the rainforest are 45 metres tall! The Amazon rainforest is in Brazil. It s the biggest rainforest in the world. Thirty percent of the world s animals and plants live there. There are more than two million insect species in the rainforests. But, every day, about 35 species become extinct and disappear. Why? Because people don t protect the rainforests. Every year, they cut down a lot of trees. Last year, they cut down an area as big as Galicia. Small farmers and big companies cut down the trees for different reasons. Farmers sometimes want to have space to cultivate food. Companies cut down trees to make paper and cardboard. If people destroy the rainforests, the consequences will be serious for everybody. That s because the rainforests produce most of the earth s oxygen. If they don t produce oxygen, there will be more carbon dioxide in the air. If there is more carbon dioxide in the air, the world s temperature will increase. This problem is called global warming. We must protect the rainforests. We need them now and people will need them in the future. 1 The world s biggest rainforest is in Latin America. 2 Some rainforests existed before dinosaurs. 3 Two million species disappear from the rainforests every day. 4 People didn t cut down any trees last year. 5 The rainforests produce carbon dioxide. Read the text again. Then answer the questions. 1 How tall are some trees in the rainforests? 2 How many insect species are there in the rainforest? 3 Why do companies cut down trees in the rainforest? 4 What will happen if there is more carbon dioxide in the air? 5 Why must we protect the rainforests? Write a few sentences about yourself. Think about these questions: How old are you? Where are you from? What are your hobbies? What sport(s) do you do? What music do you like? Who is your best friend? What is his / her name? How old is he / she? What does your best friend like to do? What music does your best friend like? What do you like to do together? Write about what you did last summer. Write words. Did you go on holiday last summer? Where did you go? / stay? What did you do? Did you spend time with friends? Write about a scary book or a frightening film. Think about these questions: What is the book / film about?

10 Who are the main characters? Why did you like the book / film? Why did you read / watch it? Write about yourself. Compare yourself now and when you were younger. Think about your plans for the future. What did you look like six years ago? What do you look like now? What did you enjoy doing when you were younger? What do you like doing now? Do you go to the same place on holiday? What are you going to do this year? What are your expectations for this new course? Work hard and you won t regret it!
