Spot Festival Saturday 12 May, 2018 How To Work With Artists In A Streaming World
Basic Facts/Denmark Five regions with a total of 5,75 mio. people Capital: Copenhagen The next 10 cities (listed by order of size): Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg, Esbjerg, Randers, Kolding, Horsens, Vejle, Roskilde, Herning 42,925 km2 8,509 km of coastline 394 islands (not counting Greenland and Faroe Islands )
The Danish Music Industry Is a Billion Euro business According to the annual report by independent consultancy Rambøll, in 2016 the Danish music industry had total revenues of 1, (including export)* - that is 10% up from the year before, and 23% up from /60,5% came from the live industry /39,5% came from recorded music *) Retail value (Rambøll, 2017), download report:
Six Reasons Why Scandinavia Was a Digital First Mover Small, transparent market makes it easier/cheaper to introduce new technology to consumers High broadband/mobile broadband penetration Availability of credit cards even for young people Healthy competition between streaming service providers including local companies Overcame the 2008 financial crisis (relatively) quickly Hard-liners on piracy
Eight Most Popular* Streaming Services in Denmark 1) YouTube 2) Spotify 3) Yousee Musik** 4) Telmore Play*** 5) Apple Music 6) Soundcloud 7) Google Play 8) Tidal *) In order of popularity (usage), according to Research carried out by Megafon for IFPI Denmark, Dec **) Yousee Musik is a rebranded version of TDC Play ***) Telmore is a subsidiary to Yousee
A Digital Market Is in Constant Development
Recorded Music Denmark Label Revenues/Digital Share (DEK) While labels total revenues have only increased with 28%, the revenues from digital sales have increased with 76% over the five-year-period (IFPI, 2018)
Development in Digital Share (Streaming + Download) Digital share of label revenue (IFPI, 2018)
The Danish Music Market by Format (IFPI, 2018)
The Format War Looked Like a Zero-sum Game. But not anymore. When one format wins another one loses. The good news is that streaming, in actual terms, gains more than the other formats lose collectively (IFPI, 2018)
The Jury Is Still Out on Vinyl We had expected vinyl to overtake CDs in 2017 but it didn t. In fact its share declined. In actual numbers, however, the changes are so small that it is hard to tell if this is a trend or a mere coincidence due to repertoire availability etc. (IFPI 2018)
Local Repertoire Suffers in Smaller Territories when Streaming, Downloads and Vinyl Rule the Market (1) (IFPI 2018)
Local Repertoire Suffers in Smaller Territories when Streaming, Downloads and Vinyl Rule the Market (2) While the small local share of vinyl is mainly a question of target groups and product availability, the smaller local share of streaming is a combination of the international streaming services distinct international focus, and its younger demographics taste in music (IFPI, 2018)
But: The Demographics Are Changing While streaming services core audience - unsurprisingly - is still found in the young segments of the market, it appears the older demographics is now coming onboard, securing streaming s continued, if somewhat slower, growth (IFPI 2018)
Streaming is not kids stuff anymore Streaming is contributing to market growth but we are still only half-way there Growth in the streaming market comes from older demographics entering the market, and younger paying rather than using free options. Local music is experiencing a race to the bottom in a streaming paradigm dominated by international repertoire. Physical product will only contribute marginally to market growth
