10 Beginning a New School Year! The start of the school year brings about school supplies, new clothes, and exciting ventures to come. Whether you re a parent to a child with severe or mild disabilities, kids often find this new beginning challenging. Children with special needs in particular may have problems with confusion, understanding what is expected of them, and may even face painful social exclusion. Here are a few tips to help you and your child prepare for the school year. Honor the feelings of the child. Parents have experienced back to school, but to kids the worst thing to say is don t worry about it. For a child experiencing school anxiety, the best thing to do is to acknowledge that those fears are real to him/her. Keeping the lines of communication open and speaking with the kids every day about their day will help ensure he/she feels supported and loved. Meet the staff. It's important to be proactive and communicate with the staff early in the school year. Make sure you have a clear understanding of your child s IEP since it is the cornerstone of your child s educational program. If you have any concerns or have questions about your child s IEP, it is imperative to communicate with the staff immediately so the child is able to start off on the right foot. Get ready for lost stuff. Begin and stay organized. Though struggling kids have widely varying issues, one that s nearly universal is a lack of internal structure. In practical terms, this means kids with special needs frequently have a difficult time with prioritizing and organizing their time and their stuff. Establish before and after school routines. Plan and practice the changes that will occur in the family s daily routine. Implement the new morning and evening schedule so they become familiar with the new routine before the first day of school. Know when to get help. As school approaches, don t be surprised if your child's excitement blends with some anxiety of your own. Pay good attention to your own stressors. Most children experience school anxiety to some extent, and some feel it more deeply and disruptively. When does it become a big enough problem seek professional help.
