About Us Ilkley Playhouse has a far-reaching reputation as a community theatre that offers superb productions that engage with audiences of all ages and interests. Based in our own theatre on the banks of the river Wharfe, Ilkley Playhouse is the jewel in the crown of Ilkley s thriving community arts scene. Every year we stage a season of around 12 productions, from modern dramas and comedies to musicals and classics of British and world theatre. We perform in our own 145 seat Wharfeside Theatre and flexible Wildman Studio. We also provide a performance venue for touring theatre companies, musicians, comedians, writers, singers and a range of other artsrelated events. Anyone can get involved. Become a Playhouse member and take part in everything from acting and directing to lighting, front of house and stage design. We also deliver theatre training for all ages at our Greenroom youth and adult classes. Ninety Years On! In the autumn of 1928 a group of local residents met to discuss the formation of a theatrical society in the town and chose the name of the Ilkley Players. The first production was presented in St Margaret s Hall on Regent Road in January After several years of performing at the Kings Hall, the Players moved in 1938 to a basic furniture store-room above the Liberal Club in Weston Road. The members then embarked on the refurbishment of the building subsequently buying the whole property in With a substantial lottery grant the Wildman Studio, workshop, and costume areas were opened in After ninety years the Playhouse continues to be a valuable asset for its members, audiences and the local community. 3

Whalegirl and other short plays by Ann Wuehler Whalegirl: An intriguing play in which a man grieving for the death of his daughter from anorexia encounters an obese girl on a beach. The Care and Feeding of Baby Birds: A dramatic monologue in which a young woman nurses abandoned fledglings while ruminating on her unsuccessful life. Frog Loves Christy: A duologue in which two half-sisters discuss their future. The Mating Season of Flying Monkeys: A comic piece in which two elderly sisters argue about love. Doll Cargo: A powerful drama about human trafficking. Cinnamon Rainbow: A comedy about a hopeless burglar who tries to rob a lonely woman. Traces of Memory: A dark drama about two women running away to escape their pasts. 6th - 8th September 2018 Starts: 7.30pm All Tickets: 6.00 Directed by Andrew Leggott and Denise MacGregor Wildman Studio Ann Whuler s powerful and perceptive work touches every open nerve of human existence, displaying a true depth of understanding. The issues covered by these seven plays include the desperation of loneliness, casual relationships and forbidden love, parental guilt, personal failure, dehumanisation and flight from an unsatisfactory reality. Yet in her inimitable gritty style the author still finds empathy, compassion and wry humour. Disturbing and entertaining in equal measure. 16+ With adult content and language. 4

Silver Lining by Sandi Toksvig Licenced by arrangement with Vivienne Clore, wwwvivienclore.com My ambition was to write a laugh out loud comedy which occasionally brings a few tears to the eye. It is a passion project with me as all the leads are women and the majority are women of a certain age. Sandi Toksvig 12th - 22nd September 2018 Starts: 7.30pm Matinee: 2.30pm Saturday 15th Tickets: Concession: (Mon-Thurs and Matinee) Students: 6.00 Greenroom: 5.00 Directed by Len Taylor Wharfeside Theatre A wonderful new play by comedian and TV presenter Sandi Toksvig. We are lucky to be able to perform this play a year after its professional opening in London. It s full of hilarious situations and conversations, but at the heart of the play is an understanding of what it is like to be older. Set in an Old Folks Home during rising floods, caused by a ferocious storm Vera, five elderly women set out to survive; despite having to cope with an unwelcome visitor and a somewhat inexperienced temporary assistant care worker. 5

You re the girls behind the guns. England needs you. Barnbow Canaries by Alice Nutter First performed at West Yorkshire Playhouse on 15 June 2016, and published by Oberon Books How often do you get a chance to be a part of a world amateur première! 1st - 10th November 2018 Starts: 7.30pm Matinee: 2.30pm Saturday 3rd Tickets: Concession: (Mon-Thurs and Matinee) Students: 6.00 Greenroom: 5.00 Directed by Paul Chewins Wharfeside Theatre 6 The true story of a group of female munition workers at the secret Barnbow Factory in Leeds during the First World War. This play seeks to show, with power and conviction, the many injustices that the women suffered and the hazardous conditions they had to work in. A rich vein of humour in the writing and contemporary first world war songs and music of the era is woven throughout. This is a beautiful play full of heart and female solidarity. It will make you laugh, cry and think. Warning: contains sudden loud noise

This is a joyful celebration of a well-loved tale with authentic carols and traditional dance to entertain and get you in the mood for the festive season. There s no crocodile this year, but we have a bigish whale! Will that do? 8

I am guilty. I am rather confused. But why did she shoot her boyfriend? Ruth never said. In this film noir style play, Amanda Whittington (Ladies Day, Be My Baby) explores, through the eyes of the investigating detective, the seedy world of escorts, of controlling rich men, of women and their support networks of friendships; and helps us, using both humour and drama, to a deeper understanding of what can drive a woman any woman along the road to murder. 9

I suppose that s what I lived for really. My music. Haunting Julia by Alan Ayckbourn This amateur production of Haunting Julia is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD 4th - 9th February 2019 Starts: 7.30pm Tickets: 8.00 Students: 6.00 Directed by Miranda Armitage Wildman Studio 10 An adolescent musical prodigy is found dead in her student flat. Was it an accident, suicide or murder? Twelve years later, three people who were all deeply bound up in her life are reunited in the very room where she died. As they unravel how their own needs and failures may have led to Julia s death, bizarre events begin to occur. But is this just a brutal hoax or a fourth presence trying to communicate? What is Julia s story? An unexpected ghost story from the great Alan Ayckbourn, Haunting Julia explores the complex issues of sudden loss and living with genius, whilst keeping the audience on the edge of their seats until the final moment!
