1 solo series sponsor CRAWLSPACE CREATED AND PERFORMED BY KAREN HINES }{ approximate running time: 85 minutes there will be no intermission ARTIST NOTE: KAREN HINES CAVEAT EMPTOR How and where do we live? What did we do to get there? Do we have the imagination to be somewhere else? Crawlspace is the second play in what I think of as a shelter trilogy. The trio includes Drama: Pilot Episode (set in the luxe and haunted Hotel Nakwaga), as well as All the Little Animals I Have Eaten (set in a condominium building that features a micro French farm in its green spaces: hyper-local produce and cute little lambs you can... pet). Crawlspace is inspired by a true story. The three plays are concerned with precarity; with the desire to transcend one s circumstances; with the overwhelming yearning for a place to rest, to feel at home. I have looked through dark, comedic lenses as I have written these plays as I wonder where we are going and how we got here. Dark, but in the end these plays cleave to the light because I think of comedy as a kind of duty... and that real estate is weirdly funny. Crawlspace is about property, ownership, shelter, and security, among other things. The play premiered at, and was commissioned by, a tiny downtown Toronto art gallery, Videofag, in the fall of The gallery had itself been at the centre of a real estate war involving Walmart and its plans to scoop up the surrounding Kensington Market neighbourhood in yet another Big Store build. That context was embraced by our production and was itself a player. We also did house parties before and after the first run: in a narrow Annex Victorian worth a million; in the kitchen at the Debajehmujig Creation Centre on Manitoulin; in an Edmonton tear-down; and in living rooms in Toronto s west and east ends. These private performances still happen, from time to time, as do public performances most recently in a micro-theatre in the centre of Vancouver s macro-market. In every case, with this play, as with the world of real estate, location, location, location matters. Where it is is where you are. So, welcome. We re glad that you re here. The doors will be locked for your safety. The room has been treated for your comfort. You will be sheltered to the best of our knowledge.
