3 A MESSAGE FROM KIP WILLIAMS STC is a company that means a lot to me. It s the company where, as a young teen, I was inspired by my first experience of professional theatre. It s the company that gave me my very first job out of drama school. And, now, it s the company I have the great honour of leading. Whilst programming my first season as Artistic Director, I ve thought a lot about the remarkable legacy of my predecessors. In 1980, Richard Wherrett set a bold vision for what the work of STC might be for the people of Sydney theatre that is grand, vulgar, intelligent, challenging and fun. That vision is very much part of STC s DNA, and is one I m excited to continue and expand upon. I ve also thought about the responsibility of running a company of the scale of STC. First and foremost, we re here to connect you to our country s most extraordinary artists, familiar and new. We re here to make works of ambition, and to surprise you with experiences you ve never encountered before. We re also here to contribute to the cultural and political life of our nation. To interrogate who we are, who we ve been, and to spark conversation about who we might want to become. Above all, we re here to reflect back at you the ever-evolving face of our city. And, finally, I ve thought about what theatre means to me, and how best I can share with you the great passion and love I have for this art form. It s at the theatre where I ve had some of the most transformative experiences of my life. It s at the theatre where I have been able to change the way I see myself, the way I see others, and the way I see my country, both past and present. And it is at the theatre where I ve had painted for me a vision of the future that has both challenged and inspired me. The stories we will be sharing with you in 2018 are an offering aimed at igniting and furthering this passion in you. There s a raft of new Australian plays that probe the emotional and political heart of Australia, from both celebrated writers and writers making their STC debut. There are familiar faces taking on titanic roles, whilst a new generation of artists rises through the ranks. This is a season that aims to live up to Wherrett s great vision for STC, and one that I hope includes and inspires you, as well as your friends and family. After all, theatre is something we do together, and I can t wait to embark on this next chapter in STC s history with you. Kip Williams Artistic Director 2 3

10 Director Imara Savage Set Designer David Fleischer Costume Designer Renée Mulder Lighting Designer Damien Cooper Composer & Sound Designer Max Lyandvert With Paula Arundell Kate Box Michelle Lim Davidson Claire Lovering Heather Mitchell Helen Thomson Contessa Treffone INSIGHT EVENTS Pre-season Briefing Mon 29 Jan 7pm Richard Wherrett Studio Audi Night with the Actors Mon 12 Mar and Mon 19 Mar post-show SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS TOP GIRLS BY CARYL CHURCHILL It takes a hard head to smash a glass ceiling Marlene is unstoppable. She s been promoted to the top job at a London employment agency and it s time to celebrate! Her dinner party with famous female figures from throughout history is one of playwright Caryl Churchill s wittiest and best-known scenes. But Marlene s success is soon undermined by the compromises she s made and the past she s left behind. Privilege comes at a cost but she might not be the one who picks up the tab. STC favourite Helen Thomson (After Dinner) makes a very welcome return to our stage in this modern classic, widely considered as Churchill s masterpiece. Whip-smart, funny, and ultimately very moving, Top Girls was written in London in 1982, with the cut-throat era of Thatcherism only just beginning. It asks questions about equality, feminism, wealth and family that are as pressing now as they were back then. Resident Director Imara Savage has assembled a suitably fearless all-female ensemble including Paula Arundell (The Bleeding Tree), Kate Box (ABC s Rake), Michelle Lim Davidson (ABC s Utopia) and Heather Mitchell (Cloud Nine) to power this high-octane opening to our 2018 season. Intent on breaking rules... Churchill sees the theatre as an open frontier where lives can be burst apart and explored. She lands a role in public relations for a family violence legal service. It s the kind of job that can completely change the way you see the world and it will. Writer Anna Barnes won STC s Patrick White Playwrights Award in Her new play, Lethal Indifference, is based on real events and her own experiences. The stunning tale is told through a single actor, Emily Barclay (ABC s Please Like Me), who brings to life a series of overlapping and interrelated chapters, full of drama, rich humour and deeply moving revelations. Lethal Indifference is many things at once: the tale of a young woman s growing awareness; a meditation on society s complicity in domestic violence; and a captivating, finally tragic, story of another woman s fight to survive. There are two types of women in this world. Those that think family violence would never happen to them and those that know it could happen to anyone. SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS BLACK IS THE NEW WHITE BY NAKKIAH LUI RETURN SEASON Love, politics and other things you shouldn t talk about at dinner The sold-out, smash hit, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy of 2017 returns bigger, better and blacker than ever! All the characters you fell in love with are back. At the centre is Charlotte Gibson, a lawyer with a brilliant career ahead of her. As her father Ray says, she could be the next female Indigenous Waleed Aly. But she has other ideas. First of all, it s Christmas. Second of all, she s in love. The thing is, her fiancé, Francis Smith, is not what her family expected he s unemployed, he s an experimental composer and he s white! Inviting him and his conservative parents to Christmas is a bold move that has all sorts of unintended consequences. Secrets are revealed, prejudices outed and old rivalries get sorted through. With a toe-tapping soundtrack and an array of brilliant, eccentric, loveable characters, this is a great night in the theatre and a thoroughly beguiling, very Australian story from award-winning playwright Nakkiah Lui. In a city shaken by economic crisis and undermined by corruption, Ui keeps rising and rising until he reaches the very top. When he gets there, he won t be breaking the law, he ll be making it. Hugo Weaving returns to STC in this powerhouse role. Written in 1941 as a cautionary satire on the rise of Hitler, Bertolt Brecht s play is both thrillingly sharp and riotously funny. Set in 1930s Chicago, it has the wit, murder and musicality of a gangster movie while asking a very political question how do we let a man like that come to power? Artistic Director Kip Williams brings a bold, visually inventive vision to this great play. With a cast that includes the legendary Peter Carroll alongside Mitchell Butel (Arms and the Man), Anita Hegh (Cloud Nine) and Ursula Yovich (The Golden Age), this promises to be a big, entertaining and thought-provoking night out. It isn t the heart-warming migrant story that people expected. Nor is it a feminist call to arms. And it certainly isn t on the best-seller lists. Going Down is the first full-length play for STC by Michele Lee, winner of the 2016 Queensland Premier s Drama Award for her play Rice. Co-produced with Malthouse Theatre, it s a brutally funny and frank examination of flawed characters failing at life in the most outrageous ways possible. Natalie, for one, has washed up on the shores of anonymity. But she isn t going to wallow in existential crisis, she s going to double down. Her next book, 100 Cocks in 100 Nights, could be the scandalous reboot her career needs. Or it could be a complete disaster. Only when she hits rock bottom, will she find a way back up. Look, let s not talk about the Mekong. We re all women here. Let s talk about the female gaze. On sex. That s my life. That s what I write about. It s the idyllic life they always wanted but there s a catch. Not far away, the nuclear power plant they used to work at has been torn apart by a natural disaster. And into their quiet life comes an old friend with a frightening proposition. The fallout will be unpredictable. Playwright Lucy Kirkwood wowed us with the globe-trotting thriller Chimerica in Now, with The Children, she s been heralded as the most rewarding dramatist of her generation (The Independent, uk). The play has been the toast of London and is on its way to Broadway. In it, Kirkwood creates a touching and richly detailed study of three people coming to grips with choices they made decades ago. We welcome back a superb cast Pamela Rabe, Sarah Peirse and William Zappa along with former STC Resident Director Sarah Goodes (Disgraced) to bring us this acclaimed and beautiful new drama. From the age of eight, Catherine McGregor knew she was a woman. But first she would have to live as a man. She played many parts: son, brother, husband, athlete, soldier, speech writer. She worked in professions full of machismo, inside institutions built by men. Every day was a challenge, and every challenge took its toll. In 2012, aged 56, McGregor faced a turning point: end her life, or transition as a woman. Drawn directly from countless hours of interviews with McGregor, Still Point Turning tells her story in her own words. It reveals a woman of fierce intellect, passion, incisive humour and profound feeling. It celebrates her tenacity without shying away from her faults. It is the true story of her true self. Writer/director Priscilla Jackman, in her STC debut, has assembled a magnificent cast, led by Heather Mitchell (Cloud Nine) as Catherine, to bring this moving and timely true story to the stage. And I arrived at the same point every trans person does. If I am to live on, it would be as the person I felt myself to be, or I would die. Somewhere in the Australian bush, mild-mannered archaeologist Dr Jacqueline Brown is conducting a survey on a site intended for the new factory of a shadowy corporation. She s under pressure to provide the all-clear, but when her dig uncovers a mass grave, she picks up a skull and is immediately over-powered by the spirit of her Aboriginal great-greatgrandmother. Blackie Blackie Brown, cold-blooded vigilante, is born. In a no-holds-barred gore-fest, she s going to kill all the descendants of the men who massacred her ancestors. White people, watch out. You could be one of them. Paying homage to blaxploitation movies, Blackie Blackie Brown features the work of Barkindji, Birri-Gubba illustrator Emily Johnson and animations by visual effects whiz-kids Oh Yeah Wow. Nakkiah Lui s script matches perfectly the lo-fi, hi-camp style of director Declan Greene (Sisters Grimm s Calpurnia Descending). With break-out newcomer Megan Wilding in the title role, and the ever-hilarious Ash Flanders playing every white person she needs to kill, this two-hander is a wild ride that will have you laughing out loud while squirming in your seat. Her faith and her visions, which inspired an entire army to victory, were both her greatest strength and her downfall. Burned at the stake as a heretic at the age of 19 and later canonised, her story has been re-written and co-opted in every generation by writers, theologians, film-makers and artists. George Bernard Shaw s dynamic classic play, written in 1923, three years after Joan s canonisation, was a key factor in his receiving the Nobel Prize in Based on records of her trial, it follows the true story of Joan s life as she fights first for her country, then for her life. Taking us from battle field to court room, Shaw s text is thrillingly alive with political machinations, moral questions and the fatal betrayal that made Joan an icon. In the role, we welcome back the extraordinary Yael Stone (Netflix s Orange is the New Black) together with a distinguished ensemble of actors including John Gaden (Orlando) and Socratis Otto (Foxtel s Wentworth) playing the men who follow Joan and then destroy her. Resident director Imara Savage will foreground Shaw s text in a stripped-back, modernist production. Topical, fresh and deeply moving If there were ever a play for our times, it is surely this one. Inspired by true stories of the repatriation of stolen bones, Ngarrindjeri writer H Lawrence Sumner s play is a sweeping family story that examines four generations of history in a rural community. Jeremiah Tucker is a man looking for peace. His daughter Simone is an archaeologist looking for bones. Her great-grandfather just wants to be buried where he belongs. Together, they will uncover the past s brutal secrets as well as hope for a way forward. Two of our country s most lauded theatre makers, director Neil Armfield and actor Wayne Blair, unite to bring this monumental new work to the stage. Set on the windswept coastline of South Australia s Coorong region, The Long Forgotten Dream is a deeply human story weaving together wry humour, poetic imagery, and a captivating array of richly drawn characters. There s even a little magic. Together, it promises a wonderful night in the theatre. Finally something deep and good is happening. Something that you don t understand. 20 SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS THE HARP IN THE SOUTH PART ONE AND PART TWO BY RUTH PARK AN ADAPTATION FOR THE STAGE BY KATE MULVANY WORLD PREMIERE A great Australian novel. A landmark theatre event. A portrait of Sydney as it once was. The great Ruth Cracknell once described novelist Ruth Park as that steady glow at the heart of Australian literature. Now, celebrated playwright Kate Mulvany brings to the stage Park s revered trilogy Missus, The Harp in the South and Poor Man s Orange. First appearing in 1947, Ruth Park s trilogy brought to life a carnival of characters. Full of humour, romance and spirited rebellion, it captured our city s best and worst features with a riveting, unflinching and endearing honesty. This epic stage adaptation spreads Park s beloved stories across two equally ambitious plays, The Harp in the South: Part One and The Harp in the South: Part Two. The two parts stand alone, but together they offer over five hours of unforgettable, exuberant theatre. It s a moving family saga and a celebration of Sydney in all its funny, gritty glory. ASSOCIATE PARTNER PART ONE: 3HRS (INCLUDING INTERVAL) It traces the lives of the Darcy family over the course of thirty years. Living at twelve-and-ahalf Plymouth Street, Surry Hills, they grow up and grow old amidst brothels and sly grog, the pious and the violent, the opportunists and the desperate. Artistic Director Kip Williams brings together an ensemble of 18 actors, including Tony Cogin, Anita Hegh, Tara Morice, Rose Riley, Guy Simon, Helen Thomson and Contessa Treffone. It s a work full of music and movement, with an original score by Iain Grandage (The Secret River) and a design from the stellar team that fashioned Chimerica in AUG 6 OCT ROSLYN PACKER THEATRE PART TWO: 2HRS 20MINS (INCLUDING INTERVAL) CONTENT: STRONG LANGUAGE Guy Simon, Contessa Treffone, Rose Riley 36 37

It s 1920 in a dusty, rural NSW town when young Margaret Kilker falls for Hugh Darcy. Newly married and in search of a brighter future, they move to Sydney s Surry Hills, where they find a home on Plymouth Street and start a family. In the shadow of the Second World War, their daughters Roie and Dolour set out on their own adventures in the crowded, boisterous streets of Sydney. THE HARP IN THE SOUTH: PART TWO The story continues amidst the changing world of Sydney in the 1950s. The shadow of the war lingers, but there is a new danger on the horizon. The homes of Surry Hills poor are threatened by government plans for redevelopment. Together, this community of workers, rebels and misfits rise up and fight back, with their voices and with their fists. At twelve-and-a-half Plymouth Street, four generations of the Darcy clan share their narrow terrace home. Beset by tragedy and loss, they struggle on, lucky to survive, ever hopeful in the face of adversity. HOW TO BOOK THESE PLAYS We encourage you to experience the entire epic. Viewed together they are a vivid and immersive narrative of Australian culture, and a memorable theatrical experience. Tickets to Part One and Part Two count as two separate plays towards your Season Ticket. You can choose to see both parts on one day, or elect to see them on different days. Did he jump or was he pushed? The cops want a cover up, but first they have to contend with an unlikely detective a certified lunatic with a knack for impersonation. Written by Italian Nobel laureate Dario Fo in 1970, this farce with a political sting in its tail has become an absurdist classic. In a first for this play, director Sarah Giles has amped up the energy with an all-female cast led by some of the country s funniest comedians. This is a smart and subversive new adaptation, created by Giles with co-adaptor Francis Greenslade (ABC s Mad as Hell). It s a glorious battle of the individual against the establishment, of underdog against overlord, of anarchy against tyranny. On the side of corruption and ineptitude, we welcome back the comic brilliance of Jane Turner (ABC s Kath and Kim) and Sacha Horler (Channel Ten s Offspring), playing opposite Helpmann Award-winner Amber McMahon, who s on the side of freedom and justice. It s so funny, resistance is futile... [a] rare thing, a political farce that is genuinely funny while also making a serious political point. Of his plays, A Cheery Soul was White s own favourite. It s a fascinating work, mixing a satirical view of Australian society with an expressionistic form, poetic language and characters that are as hilarious and grotesque as they are uncannily familiar. Returning to his imagined every-suburb of Sarsaparilla, White introduces us to one of his most memorable characters, Miss Docker, who embodies what the writer termed the destructive power of good. The prototypical Aussie busy-body, Miss Docker s story leads her in a series of increasingly surreal acts from the home of the Custances, to the local nursing home, the church, and finally to the isolated grounds of the crematorium. White s acidic insights into the nation s soul are as funny and telling now as they were upon the play s debut in A Cheery Soul has a storied past at STC, with acclaimed productions in 1979 (directed by Jim Sharman) and 2001 (directed by Neil Armfield), both starring Robyn Nevin in a role she made famous. In 2018, our Artistic Director Kip Williams takes the helm, placing the magnificent Sarah Peirse (Switzerland) into Miss Docker s fiercely sensible shoes in a bold, new production for the 21st century. [A Cheery Soul] changed what was imaginatively possible in our theatre, and provided playwrights with a new axis of creative exploration. Plus zombies! After winning over everyone who came to see it in 2016, this very cheeky, very clever, utterly irreverent riff on Hamlet made especially for children is back for a return season at the Seymour Centre. The Listies, maestros of children s entertainment, have pulled apart Shakespeare s classic and glued it back together with hilarious costumes, loads of silliness and plenty of interactivity. Hamlet is already full of things kids love in a good story: ghosts, castles, sword fights, bodily fluids and spooky stuff. Add to the mix some supersonic gags and expertly timed stage magic unlike anything kids have seen before and you have a brilliantly disguised Shakespearean tragedy for everyone aged five and over. And that s not all expect bonus pillow fights, pirates, ninjas, ninja pirates, aliens, ninja pirate aliens, zombies and a bunch of other hilarious stuff as The Listies take kids and their adults on a fun-filled hour of theatre. The only thing we can be sure of is that everyone dies at the end including the audience! One of the funniest introductions to Shakespeare imaginable. Those indefatigable kings of comedy, sorcerers of satire and masters of mockery, Jonathan Biggins and Drew Forsythe are back in the saddle and gearing up for another glorious year of political satire this time in the Roslyn Packer Theatre. The stage will be bigger and so will the laughs. We like to think of it as continuity with change. So, politicians take cover and pundits stand back, because there will be songs, there will be dance, and there will be some very funny impressions. Join us as we sort the wets from the dries, the leaks from the fakes, and the factions from the fictions in this bigger, better and wharfier Revue than The Wharf could ever handle. Frequently dark, sophisticated and as well as being awfully clever, it s also totally idiotic and hilarious.
