Greetings from Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr. On behalf of the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders, I welcome you to the Summer 2018 issue of Out & About Ocean County, A Free Newsguide to Arts & Heritage Events. Each summer we have the opportunity to enjoy art and heritage events as well as the treasures of our beaches and natural resources. Ocean County s arts and history organizations provide a rich tapestry of programs, events and classes for your summer enjoyment. Many of our towns and boroughs provide wonderful outdoor concerts, including the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation s The Carousel of Music Concert Series to be held at various locations throughout the summer. The New Jersey Teen Arts Festival will be held at the Ocean County College on May 30 and 31 and June 1. We are all grateful to the Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation for their support of this important showcase of student talent from throughout New Jersey, right here at our Ocean County College. I note with sadness the passing of Ocean County philanthropist Linda Grunin. She was a kind and generous woman, and we are extremely thankful for the wonderful work she did over the years. I am pleased to report that Berkeley Island County Park in Berkeley Township will be open for the summer. Renovations to the Cedar Bridge Tavern in Barnegat Township are also progressing. The pages of this 2018 summer issue are graced with artwork received in response to a call for contributions from the Laurelton Arts Society. This is the seventh summer that we have showcased art in our summer issue, from one of our Ocean County artist organizations on a rotating basis. Please take special note of our exciting palette of summer cultural opportunities in the event listings. I hope you are able to join me and get out and about this summer to enjoy the many cultural and artistic activities in our county. Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr. Summer 2018

Preserving an 1840 Ocean County Legacy D on t Give Up the Ship, is the plea artfully stitched on a very special and historic banner, created with care by The Ladies of Tuckerton in 1840 for a campaign function for the presidential Whig candidate William Henry Harrison. The banner has spent the last 45 years on display inside the Ocean County Historical Museum and is currently undergoing a preservation process to prevent or slow further degradation. Cynthia Smith, retired president of the Ocean County Historical Society, compiled the research and led conservation efforts. I was concerned because I could see it would deteriorate, she explained, and we were not doing it justice by hanging it where it was not often viewed by the public. She explained the Society still owns the banner but has given it on a permanent loan basis to the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission, which administered the state funding for the conservation. The cost of the conservation work is $5,775 and is completely paid for as part of a grant from the NJ Historical Commission. Ocean County Parks & Recreation will pay for a custom display case. It s in fantastic condition, Smith said, or at least pretty darn good, considering its 178 years. The artifact measures 42 by 46 inches and is made primarily of silk. On the front, an oil painting depicts a 19th-century sailing vessel, a frigate named New Jersey flying a 15-star American flag (which was customarily flown from US Navy ships during the War of 1812), and two smaller vessels in the distance. The marine scene is surrounded by a wreath of intricate and colorful floral needlework and the words Don t Give Up the Ship embroidered in gold in the perimeter. The Philadelphia-based painter s last name, Cohill, is in red. The words are attributable to New Jersey native Capt. James Lawrence, who commanded the ship Chesapeake and whose dying command, Don t give up the ship, became a popular patriotic battle cry for generations of US Navy officers and sailors. On the back of the banner is a date and location, Aug. 20, 1840, Tuckerton, New Jersey, and the words, Our Country, Right or Wrong (a popular patriotic slogan that has been attributed to Naval Commodore Stephen Decatur, in an after-dinner toast in April 1816) with a star in each corner. The Society obtained the banner in the 1960s and stored it in a room of the Ocean County Courthouse. Later, when the Society acquired its present Victorian housemuseum facility on Hadley Avenue in 1972, a wood and glass display box was Continued on page 3 Historic 1840 Banner. 6 Ocean County Legacy from page 2 made for it, and it was exhibited on a wall in the Birdsall Room, the downstairs meeting room, where it was protected from sunlight. The banner is now in the capable hands of Jakki Godfrey and Kate White of Boro 6 Art Conservation in Jersey City, where it is undergoing repair and preservation work. Godfrey said the Society had contacted her to do an assessment and proposal for treatment, which will include cleaning and stabilizing the banner, a painstaking process that may take several months. It s been in the conservators studio since early March, according to Smith. Originally the conservators planned to restore the banner to the way it might have looked in 1840, but now the goal instead is to repair the damage and preserve the banner which is in extraordinary condition for its age, according to Cultural and Heritage Commission Director Tim Hart to keep it from getting worse. This banner is true legacy of Ocean County one of the most important artifacts anywhere in the county, said Hart. Hart is hoping the work will be completed by fall; the plan is to display the banner at the soon-to-be opened Cedar Bridge Tavern, given its time period and proximity to Tuckerton. The Society just wants to maximize and optimize the banner s visibility. Smith said what she finds most impressive about the banner is the craftsmanship, which shows in how well it has held up all these years. I think it s well done, she said. The research process had a very alluring effect on her. The work of piecing together the sequence of events and key players in the story was like unraveling a mystery, she said. A little more background: Smith s research revealed much in the way of facts and assumptions that may illuminate William Henry Harrison, ninth President of the United States, was nominated by the Whig Party to run against the Democratic candidate, incumbent President Martin Van Buren; his campaign emphasized his military record during the War of He was inaugurated on March 4, 1841, in Washington, D.C., on a cold, wet day. He read his nearly two-hour inaugural speech the longest in U.S. history outside and rode his horse through the streets in the inaugural parade. Twenty days into his term, he became very ill; he died nine days later, on April 4, making his presidency the shortest of any American president, only 30 days. As Tuckerton was part of Burlington County at that time, Smith found the newspaper articles she needed in the Burlington County Library. The Ladies of Continued on page 4 Summer 2018

Ocean County Legacy from page 3 Tuckerton, who made and presented the banner to the Whig Party, must have been extremely supportive of Harrison, Smith said. This was a common thing to do at the time, she noted. She s not sure if the banner really was carried in the inaugural parade, however, given the description of the weather that day was cold and wet and, after so many hours in the rain, she would think the banner would be far worse for wear. Nevertheless, sometime after the inauguration, the banner made its way back to Tuckerton and into the home of Tuckerton physician Thomas Page or one of his descendants, and in that family it stayed for several decades until, in 1910, the banner came into the possession of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, i.e. the youth auxiliary of the anti-catholic American Nativist adult organization known as O.U.A.M. that grew out of the resentment many native American workers felt toward foreigners during the depression of the mid 1840s. Godfrey, the art conservator, earned her masters degree in art conservation at Winterthur and works at the Brooklyn Museum part-time while running her business, Boro 6, which provides museum-quality conservation, restoration and collections care services to institutions, galleries and private individuals in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. She and her colleague Kate White have backgrounds that encompass art (hand skills), art history and science. They specialize in objects and textiles ranging from ancient Egyptian mummies to more contemporary materials. In Godfrey s overview of the painted silk banner, she explained the problem with silk is at one point in history it was made with lead in it, to give it weight. As a result, over time it can shatter or develop cracking and splits, increasing its fragility. The Tuckerton banner has splits throughout, and will continue to degrade. It also has metallic fringe on the sides, gilded acorn finials, and wooden bars at top and bottom for ease of carrying in a marching parade. Godfrey and White will do a surface clean with some soft gentle brushing and low suction to remove dust and debris. If necessary, a tool similar to a cosmetic sponge can coax out more ingrained dirt. They will stabilize the shattered areas with adhesive backing to support it and help hold the fabric together. The areas of surface loss they will tone with paper fill to blend them in and make them less distracting. To the acorns, where the gilding has flaked, they will add some conservation-grade adhesive, she explained. Some of the fringe needs to be resewn in spots where it has come apart, Godfrey added. To some silk ribbon on the banner that has very severely degraded, they will do an encapsulation with nylon net that has been dyed to match the original color. You won t really be able to tell from far away, she said. They will work with a company to construct a glass display case. More aesthetic compensation could be done, Godfrey said, but, as a used object, the signs of wear are acceptable. The priority is to clean and preserve its integrity, to the best of our knowledge and use of materials, and in accordance with the guidelines of the American Institute of Conservation, she said. Smith s conclusion: From , some 178 years and 45 presidential campaigns later, the banner has been cared for and preserved by various stewards as a unique historical piece of presidential campaign memorabilia. 9 Performing Arts Academy Moves to OCC By: Victoria Ford I n a historic move that will give some of Ocean County s most talented young students an even greater advantage in pursuing their postsecondary degrees and entering their chosen professions, Ocean County Vocational-Technical Schools Performing Arts Academy will relocate from Lakehurst to the campus of Ocean County College next year. Since it opened in 2001, PAA has been located at the OCVTS Lakehurst Center at the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. The upwards of $30 million project is being funded in part by the state of New Jersey, in part by the college, in part by the Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation, and in part by the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders. About a year and a half ago, state funding became available, which made it easier to get the ball rolling. The state s share is 39 percent, according to Freeholder John Bartlett. The project is currently out to bid; Hoey said they hope to break ground before summer. OCC will set the actual schedule for construction and opening. Meanwhile the schools staffs are working together to ensure a smooth transition for all. Foundation President Jeremy Grunin said it s been an ongoing discussion for some time among the parties involved. Statewide, there s been a push to move academies onto community college campuses, he noted. Monmouth County Vocational School District s High Technology High School, a pre-engineering academy, is Continued on page 7

Performing Arts Academy from page 6 a cooperative venture with Brookdale Community College, for example. OCVTS Superintendent William Hoey explained a lot of high schools are partnering with community colleges, both as a way to streamline the educational pathway for students and for parents to spread the cost of a two-year degree over four years. The students get a real solid education in the arts, plus access to a degree that will make it easier to move into a four-year program. That s right Performing Arts Academy students can graduate not only with a high school diploma but an associate s degree that enables them to feed right into an OCC or Kean University program. It takes a lot of work, and you gotta put your nose to the grindstone, Bartlett said, but for motivated students the opportunity is there. And with OCC tuition very affordable already, he added, combined with scholarship opportunities, it s an unbeatable deal. We ll be designing our courses to meet college requirements, Hoey said. The design of the new building has been a joint effort of the college and academy and will include some shared spaces that enable cross-usage and opportunities to use them together. Visually the new building will meld into the existing structural landscape, according to Bartlett. And its location on the edge of the campus will make it easy for high school buses to load and unload the students every day. He doesn t foresee any issues with the mixed age range of academy students and college students. Hoey described it as a very modern facility. It will have a large black box, a second, smaller black box the college can access, specialized classrooms for the four disciplines of voice, dance, theater and audio engineering, as well as traditional academic classrooms. The PAA will use the college s library, gym, student center and other common spaces. It s a real partnership, Hoey said. The benefits are mutual and far-reaching. We have two blue-ribbon high schools in Ocean County, Grunin said, referring to PAA and MATES (Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science). We believe this is another step forward in establishing Ocean County as a leader in the arts and culture. The entities work hand in hand together very nicely, Bartlett said. The arrangement also helps the vocational school save on operational costs and makes use of existing utilities and parking lots, unlike new construction on an empty lot. ******************************* The PAA is a full-time, specialized and comprehensive public high school developed specifically for the young artist-in-training, offering intensive studies in the Continued on page 8 Future Performing Arts Academy. Students leave equipped with practical skills to either continue their arts education and/ or audition for professional companies. The PAA teaching philosophy incorporates the arts into all educational areas by integrating curriculum and interaction with arts professionals. PAA graduates learn useful skills in all areas of endeavors in the workforce, Bartlett said. Moreover, Happy students are good students, he said. Future Black Box. Photo credit: Grunin Center for the Arts The Grunin Foundation is a private family philanthropic foundation that aims to make the Central Jersey Shore the regional template for quality of life and strong economic health through root-causefocused investment in healthcare, education and the arts. As a proactive grantmaker, the foundation identifies and invests in organizations that will help it reach its various programmatic goals, by collaborating on innovative projects that have measurable impact and create meaningful, transformative change within the community. The PAA draws from public and private schools from every district in the county, Hoey explained. Admission is a competitive process, 50-percent based on academic performance (middle school grades, standardized test scores, an admissions test) and 50-percent on the strength of an audition in a specified discipline. The school guarantees at least one opening for every district within a freshman class. On average, the academy receives applications and accepts about 70. Total enrollment as of September 2016 was 281. Hoey anticipates an increase in applications after the move to OCC. Additionally, in line with the Grunin mission to increase community involvement and economic development opport u n i t i e s i s t h e i d e a t h a t attracting young people and families to the area leads to economic growth and development. The arts help mold the creative minds that may become tomorrow s leaders, he said. Future Performing Arts Academy dance space. 12 Bellarine Theatre includes underserved audience By: Victoria Ford B ellarine Theatre Co. is among the first in the state to offer sensory-safe productions, which are altered or modified by adjusting lighting levels and volumes to create a more comfortable experience for audience members with autism or other sensory processing sensitivity. Company co-founder Jessica Huch further explained, we also implicate cueing, i.e., a crew member follows along in the script and lets audience members know when something loud or jarring is about to happen. We create a safe area that audience members are encouraged to utilize if they need to take a break from the show, where they can engage in soothing activities and take their time. Someone with severe claustrophobia may benefit from a more relaxed setting, she noted. Bellarine strives to provide a safe and supportive environment, she said. Nurses, special education teachers and therapists have volunteered their time to assist with these productions in the past, Huch added. In short, she said, A sensory-safe performance is a day of theatre that can be enjoyed by all. The husband-wife team of Chris and Jessica Huch started Bellarine in In 2014, they offered their first special needs-friendly preview with Dorothy Meets Alice. Their inspiration came from Jessica s younger sister, Carlie, who is on the autism spectrum and has additional sensory processing diagnoses. When she was younger, she loved following me around the house while I was rehearsing, Huch said. But when it came time to see her big sister in a show, more times than not, my mom or dad had to escort her out of the theater because she was having an overload and being disruptive. My family experienced those looks firsthand, and it was really hard. My sister wanted to enjoy it. She loves music. She loves dancing. Sometimes it s just too much for her to process, and she lets everyone know it. The epiphany came during a family trip to see an Autism-friendly performance of The Lion King on Broadway, presented by the Theatre Development Fund. Continued on page 10 Summer 2018

Bellarine Theatre from page 9 Jessica Huch & sister Carlie Evans at Legally Blonde Photo credit: Bellanine Theatre I think my mom spent more time crying during that performance watching my sister and others around her vocalize their excitement and their true feelings, she recalled. There were no looks from others around us, just pure love and excitement. There was something magical in that room that day. The experience convinced the Huchs that Bellarine could do it too. We figured if it could be done on such a large scale, why couldn t we offer this with Bellarine, closer to home? In 2014, according to Huch, Bellarine was one of few theatre groups in New Jersey offering sensory-safe productions. I d like to think by offering this program we ve given other groups the nudge to participate as well. Given the number of arts organizations in the region, she added she hopes more opportunities will arise. Not only do the audiences benefit, but the entire production team does as well, she said. Performances for these families are always our favorite. When looking out into the audience, our cast members see nothing but pure joy. Sensory issues are increasingly common, and many affected individuals and families may feel reluctant to go out in public for fear of being disruptive; the Huchs want no one to feel excluded from a Bellarine production. American Sign Language interpreters from Ocean County College were provided for one of the regularly scheduled performances of You re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. We are always looking for more ways to be inclusive, as we truly believe that theatre should be enjoyed by all. Chris Huch and Carlie Evans at James and the Giant Peach Photo credit: Bellanine Theatre With movie theaters following suit, Huch said she hopes to see such accommodations become more mainstream there is no reason why not, she said. According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 1 in 59 children are diagnosed with ASD, and about 1 in 6 children are diagnosed with a developmental disability. It is my hope that other organizations begin to open their doors to patrons and customers they may not have thought to include. 23 Salute to Ocean County, Teen Arts Awards The Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission s Salute to Ocean County recognizes the arts and heritage as the richest and most beautiful aspects of life in this part of New Jersey and celebrates selected individuals who represent those qualities in their work, their passions, and their contributions to society. The annual celebration is held at the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts at Ocean County College. The event runs concurrently with the Ocean County Teen Arts Festival, with student artwork from many of the county s high schools on display on the center s second floor, while the awards ceremony takes place in the theater on the ground floor. During the reception before the event, guests snack and mingle, admire the exhibit and socialize with members of the community. Performances by high school choirs, instrumental groups, dancers and actors are interspersed throughout the program. Each year the Salute expands its use of multimedia elements to present the highest-quality possible event, calling upon ASL interpreters and closed-captioning for the hearing impaired; slide shows of artwork on a projection screen to accompany the onstage activities; and mini documentary videos of the award winners, made by high school students. Meanwhile the whole program is broadcast and livestreamed on Ocean TV-20, the college TV station and webpage, by OCC students led by TV Production Director Ralph Bertini. Bertini praised the very hands-on visual communications and electronic media program at OCC, saying for a community college it s very well hooked up, with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. As a teacher he said the most rewarding aspect of his job is passing on the knowledge and skills to his students and watching them grow. One of this year s notable winners was Lori Pepenella, CEO of the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce, Cultural and Heritage Commission member of eight years, and recipient of the Joseph H. Vicari Tourism Award. Upstairs before the presentation she expressed her appreciation for the recognition and said she he was very excited. Tourism in Ocean County is a $4 billion industry, she said, and a lot of people contributed to that amount, so for me to stand out is beyond an honor. At the outset of the program, Commission Director Tim Hart spoke of the creative economy, defined as an engine of growth and community vitality, as artists, cultural nonprofits, and creative enterprises produce and distribute cultural goods and services that generate jobs, revenue, and quality of life. Ocean County Freeholders Joseph Vicari and John Bartlett gave some remarks about the importance of valuing history and the humanities. Vicari acknowledged the good work of the Grunin family, who have planted the seeds of culture in Ocean County that are growing and bearing fruit. Hart later echoed that sentiment and said the Grunins have brought certain dynamism to the arts and cultural scene. Sarah Cureton of the New Jersey Historical Commission praised the Cultural and Heritage Commission as one of the most effective and active in the state. She also outlined some of the major upcoming campaigns, projects and observances Continued on page 21

Salute from page 20 including Armistice Day this November; the complex topic of Native Americans storylines in New Jersey; the summer of suffrage as the Commission builds to the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment in 2020; and nation s semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) in 2026 and so many stories yet to be told. Next up, Mary Eileen Fouratt of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts called Ocean County a statewide leader in arts and history preservation. Toms River mosaic artist Yvonne Yaar unveiled the teen arts mosaic project, Reflections: Collaborative Colors, a glass quilt-like work comprising 5-inch squares permanently installed on a wall of the Grunin Center. Upon finding out he had been selected to receive the Pauline S. Miller Lifetime Achievement in Ocean County History, Al Stokley said he got halfway through the letter and had to sit down. Stokley was recognized for his contributions to the preservation of Berkeley Township history and county railroads. The Lifetime Achievement Award for Ocean County Art went to Eva Lucena Welch, Executive and Artistic Director of Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre, a nonprofit performing arts organization dedicated to preserving and cultivating the cultural arts of Spain, with a special emphasis on Spain s historical interactions with other world populations. Toms River Township Clerk and Historian J. Mark Mutter was the recipient of the John C. Bartlett Jr. Government Leadership Award, selected based on his many years of dedicated service, both elected and appointed, to his beloved township, including as the first official historian. June Ann M. Sullivan received the Special Recognition for Advancement of the Arts Award, for her work in founding the Watermark Gallery in Tuckerton, inspiring artists, organizing art shows and providing public programs that enrich the cultural fabric of her community. On behalf of Joseph Lappin, his children accepted a special posthumous Toms River Seaport Society Award for Lappin s lifetime of dedication to the county s heritage through his work at the Toms River Seaport in preserving the boat building traditions of the Barnegat Bay. Ending the evening with levity and flair, Grunin Foundation President Jeremy Grunin presented the final Teen Arts awards. The grand prize of $5,000 went to the cast of Point Pleasant Borough s theatrical production of Peter and the Starcatcher. Another of the Salute s winners was Brick Township High School student Regan Baney, 18, whose creative writing entry, a work of historical fiction title Farewell and Adieu, earned her a $1,000 prize, of which she said every cent of my award money will go towards my college fund. The award is meaningful to her, she said, because it says I have created something worthwhile and that my work deserves respect. I have always been insecure about my work, but this was very affirming to me as a writer and historian. I feel like I have a place in my field. Summer 2018
