3 LET THE SUNSHINE IN (Un beau soleil intérieur) Gala Opening Wednesday, November 15th Sunday, November 26th Director: Claire Denis 94 mins 2017 France Digital Opening Film, Directors Fortnight, Cannes Film Inspired by Roland Barthes s A Lover s Discourse, Claire Denis teams up with writer Christine Angot to tell, in fragments, the romantic journey of Isabelle (Juliette Binoche), a sensitive, middle-aged, unhappily divorced artist and mother, as she moves from one lover to the next in search of definitive love. Exquisitely lit by Denis long-standing cinematographer Agnès Godard, and with a constellation of star actors (Gérard Depardieu, Xavier Beauvois, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Bruno Podalydès), Isabelle s quest for love unfolds with a delightful and uplifting finale. MPR director s note: A radiant, luminous Juliette Binoche stars in this sinuous and bittersweet romantic comedy set in Paris. Thursday, November 16th Director: Gilles Bourdos 105 mins 2017 France Digital Orizzonti Selection, Venice International Film Thursday, November 16th Sunday, November 19th Director: Michel Hazanavicius 107 mins 2017 France Digital Main Competition, Cannes Film ENDANGERED SPECIES (Espèces Menacées) Based on a collection of short stories by American writer Richard Bausch, this ambitious film vibrantly depicts the interweaving fates of three troubled families, reflecting on the mutability of relationships and shifting power dynamics between parents and their adult children. At its centre is the wrenching story of newlyweds Joséphine and Tomasz, and the domestic violence that lurks beneath. Poignant, challenging and filled with tension, the film is visually thrilling, with arresting cinematography and a cast that gives conviction to its sophisticated patchwork of human frailty, bringing light to the darkness. MPR director s note: Bourdos examines each character with great empathy while revealing the infinite variation of suffering they can inflict. REDOUBTABLE (Le Redoutable) Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) tackles a key moment in the life of iconic French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard. The year is 1967; Godard s latest film, La Chinoise, has been a disaster. Disillusioned, the director becomes increasingly radicalised by the student revolt of 1968 and rejects his past life and work to embark on a new creative and ideological path. Redoubtable pokes affectionate fun at Godard s foibles, using pastiches of cinematic devices he popularised to droll effect. In the lead role, Louis Garrel nimbly avoids caricature and essays Godard s combination of effortless cool and brittle insecurity with aplomb. DOM director s note: Astute, entertaining, and with winks to the French New Wave, Redoubtable is by turns affectionate and irreverent. Thursday, November 16th Wednesday, November 22nd Sunday, November 26th Director: Teddy Lussi-Modeste 92 mins 2017 France Digital Special presentation, Toronto International Film THE PRICE OF SUCCESS (Le prix du succès) Brahim Mecheri, the new comic sensation, comes from a North African working-class family in the Parisian suburbs. His rising fame begins to erode the bond with his elder brother, Mourad, who has supported him all along as manager, agent, producer, lawyer, bodyguard and driver. But if Mourad is indeed a dedicated brother prizing loyalty and family above all, he is also manipulative and starting to make questionable career decisions for Brahim. Co-written by Rebecca Zlotowski (Grand Central), and carried by an excellent triptych of actors (Tahar Rahim, Roschdy Zem and Maïwenn), this is sleek, seductive, powerful mainstream cinema. MPR director s note: A fast-moving tale of family alienation, blood ties and emotional traps, and the passionate break-up between two brothers in the world of showbiz. Friday, November 17th Thursday, November 23rd Director: Alain Gomis 123 mins 2017 France-Belgium-Senegal- Germany Digital Winner: Grand Jury Prize, Berlin Film FÉLICITÉ Félicité (singer-turned-actress Véro Tshanda Beya Mputu) is a proudly independent music club performer in the DR Congo city of Kinshasa in Franco-Senegalese director Alain Gomis s vibrant fourth feature. When her fourteen-year-old son is severely injured in a motorcycle accident, Félicité is forced to seek the help of a persistent suitor to secure funding for medical care. With the emphasis placed on character and tone, Gomis s immersive drama is a sensual urban tapestry that resonates with the indigenous music and song of Kinshasa. DOM director s note: This portrait of a struggling single mother in Kinshasa is haunting, captivating, sensually complex and vibrant. 4 IFI French Film 5

4 AURORA (AURORE) 120 BPM (BEATS PER MINUTE) (120 battements par minute) Friday, November 17th Monday, November 20th Director: Blandine Lenoir 90 mins 2017 France Digital Aurora (Agnès Jaoui), middle-aged and separated, has lost her job and is living with her two twenty-something daughters, Lucie and Marina. When Marina tells her she is pregnant, both break down in tears Marina because she is pregnant, Aurora as she is facing menopause and is about to become a grandmother. A chance meeting however with the love of her youth, Totoche, turns her life around. Revitalised, she discovers the solidarity of other women and that her innermost concerns are indeed universal. A comedy filled with hope, quick-witted dialogue, and funny and moving situations. MPR director s note: Agnès Jaoui wholly inhabits the character of Aurora, with tenderness, vibrancy and great ease. The screening on Friday, November 17th will be followed by a Q&A with Agnès Jaoui. Saturday, November 18th Thursday, November 23rd Directors: Robin Campillo 140 mins 2017 France Digital Winner: Grand Jury Prize, Cannes Film Festival 2017 Set in the 1990s at the height of France s AIDS epidemic, Robin Campillo s (Eastern Boys, IFI French Film Festival 2014) film follows the grassroots Act Up campaign of agitation against a pharmaceutical company that refuses to reveal its findings on potentially effective new drugs. Against this backdrop the HIVpositive Sean, one of the group s founders, begins a tentative romance with gentle newcomer Nathan, who has tested negative for the virus. 120 BPM is by turns a beautifully observed love story and a fiercely engaged political work that simmers with a quiet anger. DOM director s note: The courage of 1990s ACT UP AIDS Activists is poignantly portrayed by this vibrant group of young actors. THE HOUSE BY THE SEA (La villa) LOVER FOR A DAY (L amant d un jour) Friday, November 17th Sunday, November 19th Director: Robert Guédiguian 107 mins 2017 France Digital Main competition, Venice Film The latest classically composed family drama from Robert Guédiguian (The Snows of Kilimanjaro) boasts much of this director s trademark humanism and empathy for working-class lives. When their elderly father falls ill, a group of adult siblings reunite in the idyllic fishing town of their youth to consider their next steps. Once bustling, the town has become a relic, inhabited only by the elderly or out-of-town holidaymakers. The film is an elegiac, poignant meditation on growing older and of the passing of a traditional way of life. DOM director s note: Reuniting with a number of his favourite actors, Guédiguian s reflective and hopeful film is in tune with these times of local and global upheaval. Saturday, November 18th Friday, November 24th Director: Philippe Garrel 76 mins 2017 France Digital Black and White Winner: SACD prize from France s Writers, Directors and Composers Guild, Directors' Fortnight, Cannes Film 23-year-old student Jeanne (Esther Garrel) has just been kicked out by her boyfriend. Heartbroken, she moves back in with her university professor father Gilles (Éric Caravaca), only to discover that he s been living for the past three months with one of his students, Ariane (Louise Chevillotte), who is the same age as her. Both girls will find common ground despite their differences. The bare simple storytelling of an unusual triangular relationship of desire, rivalry and friendship extends the director s ongoing exploration of female characters to form an elegant meditation on love and fidelity. MPR director s note: The film s grainy, luminous, black and white look, subtly paired with impressionistic music, gives Lover for a Day a timeless, meditative quality. Saturday, November 18th Director: Agnès Jaoui 112 mins 2000 France Digital Winner of 4 César Awards 2001 Winner European Screenwriter, European Film Awards 2000 Oscar Nominee: Best Foreign Language Film 2001 THE TASTE OF OTHERS (Le goût des autres) Castella (Jean-Pierre Bacri) is a boorish provincial businessman with no cultural leanings, often plain and clumsy. He is surrounded by flute-playing chauffeur Bruno (Alain Chabat) and Moreno (Gérard Lanvin), a temporary personal bodyguard. Enter the melancholic Clara (Anne Alvaro), an actress Castella has fallen for during her performance in Racine s Bérénice. Castella, obsessed by Clara, attempts to fit into her bohemian lifestyle, her cultural tastes, and her circle of artist friends who hang out in a bar where free-spirited barmaid Manie (Agnès Jaoui) deals hashish and manages to have relationships with both of Castella s employees. MPR director s note: Agnès Jaoui's exquisitely and lovingly measured unconventional romantic comedy examines the attraction between opposites and the frailty of human connections. This screening will be introduced by Agnès Jaoui. Saturday, November 18th Director: Carine Tardieu 100 mins 2017 France Digital Official Selection, Directors Fortnight, Cannes Film JUST TO BE SURE (ôtez-moi d un doute) Forty-five-year-old bomb disposal expert Erwan (François Damiens) has discovered, quite by accident, that the man who raised him isn t actually his real dad. With the help of a private detective agency he attempts to track down his biological father, a quest that leads to a chance encounter with veterinarian Anna (Cécile de France) whom he falls in love with. Meanwhile, Erwan s daughter Juliette has learnt she is pregnant and is in no hurry to find out who the father is. Misdirection and amusing misunderstandings abound in this sparkling comedy. MPR director s note: Bouncing along with improbable situations which stack together like a surprising puzzle, this comedy is a reinvigorating tonic! 6 IFI French Film 7

5 ISMAEL S GHOSTS (Les fantômes d Ismaël) A SEASON IN FRANCE (Une saison en France) Sunday, November 19th Friday, November 24th Director: Arnaud Desplechin 114 mins 2017 France Digital Opening film, Cannes Film In Ismael s Ghosts, Mathieu Amalric reprises the role of Ismael Vuillard, who first appeared in Arnaud Desplechin s Kings and Queen (2004). Vuillard is now a film director making a thriller based on the life of his brother, whom he believes to be a spy. Ismael s wife Carlotta has been missing for twenty-one years and is presumed dead. Now living with Sylvia (Charlotte Gainsbourg), an astrophysicist, Ismael s already complex world is further derailed by the surprise reappearance of Carlotta (Marion Cotillard). Desplechin s typically exuberant film was chosen to open this year s Cannes Film Festival. DOM director s note: Desplechin s part-melodrama, part-thriller, partcomedy is a maze of possibilities told through virtuoso editing. The screening on Sunday, November 19th will be introduced by Léa Mysius. Tuesday, November 21st Director: Mahamet-Saleh Haroun 100 mins 2017 France Digital Abbas (Eriq Ebouaney) is an asylum seeker who has fled civil war in the Central African Republic to live in Paris where he works menial jobs to provide for his two young children. His brother Etienne has also made the crossing, but his wife was not so fortunate and Abbas s dreams are haunted by her memory. Tentatively he begins a relationship with Carole (Sandrine Bonnaire), a matter-of-fact woman who offers him a home for his children, but Abbas must await the outcome of the asylum process before committing to his new life. DOM director s note: A compassionate moving film, set in Paris, which highlights the dramatic ongoing situation of refugees. Monday, November 20th Director: Jean-Stéphane Bron 110 mins 2017 France Digital Official Selection, Locarno International Film THE PARIS OPÉRA (L Opéra) Bron s unobtrusive camera turns the backstage of Paris s Palais Garnier into a show itself, from the top floor of the director s office to the basement, featuring meetings, audition day, the cancellation of a lead singer just prior to opening, strike notices, unions and the first performance given after the Bataclan nightclub massacre plunged Paris into mourning. We are drawn inside this collective micro-society of 1700 employees full of its own dramas where artists, performers, assistants, coaches, costume designers, laundry washers, retouchers, wig department, choir, cleaners, and even a live bull, all pull together and do battle to operate this legendary establishment. MPR director s note: Shot over sixteen months this brilliant, immersive documentary goes behind the scenes of the prestigious Paris Opera. Wednesday, November 22nd Saturday, November 25th Director: Michael Haneke 107 mins 2017 France-Austria-Germany Digital Main Competition, Cannes Film HAPPY END A coolly observed study of familial dysfunction, Michael Haneke s follow-up to Amour (IFI French Film Festival 2012) has all of the stylistic traits we have come to expect: the cut-glass precision, scenes shot to resemble static surveillance footage, significant action taking place in the margins of long shots, and the presence of Isabelle Huppert. Thematically the film revisits Haneke s concerns with bourgeois complacency and guilt, racial prejudice and our changing relationship to technology. Moments of comedy introduce a surprising and welcome new element to the director s winning formula. DOM director s note: Reuniting with Trintignant and Huppert, Haneke s fascinating and tactical plot builds with frightening precision. FACES PLACES (Visages, Villages) GAUGUIN (Gauguin Voyage de Tahiti) Tuesday, November 21st Saturday, November 25th Directors: Agnès Varda, JR 89 mins 2017 France Digital The indefatigable Agnès Varda, octogenarian and treasure of world cinema, teams up with the mysterious JR, a street artist specialising in large-scale outdoor photographic portraiture, in the delightful Faces Places, a docu-travelogue that sees the irresistibly incongruent duo embark on a quest to honour the faces and places of rural France. Travelling from town to town in JR s van, fitted out to resemble a gigantic camera, they immortalise the faces of intriguing locals they meet along the way with immense public murals. DOM director s note: 30-something artist JR and 80-something Varda travel rural France celebrating the process of creativity. Thursday, November 23rd Sunday, November 26th Director: Edouard Deluc 102 mins 2017 France Digital Official Selection, Bienne French Film Festival, Switzerland An atmospheric tale of adventure and the mysteries of creation, the film is inspired by Noa Noa, Gauguin s illustrated travelogue created during his first visit to Tahiti ( ). There s no face or landscape worth painting here, remarks Gauguin (Vincent Cassel) of Paris, as he embarks on an epic journey to French Polynesia. Yet it is Cassel s face that offers such a compelling and intriguing portrait of Gauguin, a man passionately committed to painting, confronting the unspoilt nature which inspires, but at the same time, devours him. MPR director s note: A richly pictorial account of Gauguin inspired by the vivid imagery of the artist s travel journals. 8 IFI French Film 9

6 Friday, November 24th Director: Stéphane Brizé 119 mins 2016 France Digital Winner: FIPRESCI Prize for Best Film, Venice International Film Festival 2016 Winner: Prix Louis-Delluc 2016 A WOMAN S LIFE (Une vie) A startling and deeply moving costume drama set in 19th century rural Normandy, the film portrays the life of noblewoman Jeanne (the wonderful Judith Chemla) betrayed by both her husband and her son. Expecting her life to remain as full of warmth as her childhood, we track Jeanne s loss of ideals and disillusionment as she struggles with the restrictive moral codes of the era. The use of Academy ratio captures depth of character and texture, while flash-forwards and elliptical narrative transmit the passage of time. MPR director s note: Stéphane Brizé s (The Measure of a Man) resonant adaptation of Guy de Maupassant s classic novel, is a rich and rare cinematic visualisation. Saturday, November 25th Director: Hubert Charuel 90 mins 2017 France Digital Official Selection, Critics Week, Cannes Film BLOODY MILK (Petit Paysan) Pierre (Swann Arlaud) a thirty-something bachelor is a solitary character. Obsessed with his work as a dairy farmer on the family farm which he inherited deep in rural France, his life revolves around his 30 cows, his parents, his sister, the local vet, and occasional social life with his friends. With the outbreak of an epidemic, one of his cows is infected, but Pierre will do anything to save his herd. Charuel shifts brilliantly from naturalistic portrayal into dark psychological thriller playing with the codes of the genre. MPR director s note: The dreamlike opening scene sets the tone for this film: audacious, eerie and affecting. NEW TALENT 2017 Sunday, November 19th Wednesday, November 22nd Director: Léa Mysius 105 mins 2017 France Digital Sunday, November 26th Director: Léonor Serraille 97 mins 2017 France Digital Winner: Caméra d'or, Cannes Film AVA Thirteen-year-old Ava (Noée Abita) is spending her summer on the Atlantic coast when she learns that her retinitis pigmentosa is advancing and she will lose her sight sooner than expected. While her mother determines to make the holidays especially memorable, Ava is more inclined to explore her attraction to Juan, a local Spanish tearaway, whose wolfish black dog she steals in an effort to gain his attention. Léa Mysius s luminous début feature, shot on 35mm, is a distinctive, highly original coming-of-age drama. DOM director s note: Léa Mysius s first feature, the story of Ava growing up, is equal parts imaginative, daring and transgressive - sheer sensual beauty. The screening on Sunday, November 19th will be followed by a Q&A with Léa Mysius, moderated by Dr. Maeve Connolly of IADT. The screenings of Ava will be preceded by Léa Mysius s short Thunderbirds (Les Oiseaux-tonnerre). Screened with the support of the Fémis French National Film School. JEUNE FEMME Jeune Femme tells the story of Paula, who finds herself alone in Paris after a break-up. With little to her name, other than her furry white cat, Muchaca, we follow her fearless, intense, multifaceted character on a precarious journey as she bounces from one encounter to the next, transforming as she goes, eventually stealing your heart. Léonor Serraille s début feature and Cannes Caméra d Or winner captures Paris by day and night with startlingly vivid imagery, and features actress Laetitia Dosch in almost every frame. MPR director s note: Laetitia Dosch gives a captivating performance as Paula, the remarkable and explosive jeune femme on the verge of a nervous breakdown. PRIX JEAN VIGO Saturday, November 25th This year s programme is dedicated to Luce Vigo ( ) who was our festival guest in 2011 on the occasion of the Prix Jean Vigo s 60th anniversary. Director: Mathieu Amalric 97 mins 2017 France Digital Winner: Prix Jean Vigo, 2017 Winner: Best Poetic Narrative Prize, Un Certain Regard, Cannes Film Director: Emmanuel Marre 30 mins 2017 France-Belgium Digital Winner: Best Short Film, Prix Jean Vigo 2017 Grand Prix French Competition, Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film BARBARA Brigitte (Jeanne Balibar), an actress, prepares to play the role of the celebrated late singer Barbara for a film adaptation of her life in director Mathieu Amalric s playfully meta-textual exploration of a French icon. Amalric (who also stars as Brigitte s on-screen director) eschews the traditional conventions of the biopic in favour of a highly distinctive, imaginative and self-reflexive essay on creativity that manages to get to the essence of the great singer s artistic process. MPR director s note: Mathieu Amalric invents a layered, ingenious and wonderfully dreamy portrayal of legendary singer Barbara. The screening of Barbara will be preceeded by a screening of Emmanuel Marre s The Summer Movie. THE SUMMER MOVIE (Le film de l été) In this evocative short from director Emmanuel Marre, Philippe cruises with Aurélien and his nine-year-old son, Balthazar, who must be brought back to his mother in Marseille. 7 JEAN-PIERRE MELVILLE CENTEnNIAL PROGRAMME We are delighted to present four features and a short by master director Jean-Pierre Melville. Father figure to the French New Wave, best known for his ultra-cool, austere, mesmerising exploration of the human psyche in his starstudded crime dramas, Melville s influence has been considerable with auteurs including Jim Jarmusch, Michael Mann, Quentin Tarantino and John Woo. MPR Tickets for all Melville Centennial screenings cost 7. THE SILENCE OF THE SEA (Le silence de la mer) Shot by Henri Decaë, cameraman to the Nouvelle Vague, Melville s first feature is one of a trilogy of wartime stories of the occupation and resistance in France. Staged mainly in one room in a rural house, an old man and his niece (Nicole Stéphane) are forced to provide lodgings for a German officer (Howard Vernon), a musician, and a sensitive and cultured idealist. The weapon of resistance they use is complete silence. Saturday, November 18th mins 1949 France Digital Black and White The screening will be preceeded by Melville s short 24 Hours in the Life of a Clown (24 heures de la vie d un clown). 18 mins 1946 France Digital Black and White Dr Douglas Smith, Senior Lecturer, School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, UCD, will introduce this screening. BOB THE GAMBLER (Bob le flambeur) Melville s most memorable character, Bob Montagné, with his silver-hair, trenchcoat and Bogartesque style, is an aging thiefturned-gambler who sets out to bring off one last coup, a heist on the Deauville casino. Inspired in part by John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle, it reflects Melville s love for Hollywood gangster movies, with the themes of friendship, loyalty, betrayal and solitude recurring in much of his work. Sunday, November 19th mins 1956 France Digital Black and White LÉON MORIN, PRIEST (Léon Morin, prêtre) This brilliant adaptation of Béatrix Beck s autobiography centres on a young atheist, communist widow Barny (Emmanuelle Riva), and her developing love for a handsome unconventional priest (Jean-Paul Belmondo) who tries to convert her. Seen through the eyes of Barny, their dual-like encounters walk a thin line between religious passion and sexual tension, delicately constructed through Henri Decaë s low-key photography, effective editing, and skillful use of voice-over. Saturday, November 25th mins 1961 France Digital Black and White Dr Brigitte Le Juez, Associate Professor at DCU, will introduce this screening. ARMY OF SHADOWS (L armée des ombres) Made between Le Samouraï and The Red Circle, Melville s breathtaking masterpiece completed his triptych about the Occupation and Resistance. An adaptation of Josep Kessel s novel, Melville draws on his own experience of the Occupation in this exquisite suspense epic. Dark tones of blue-grey dominate its morbid narrative filled with betrayal and death, plunging us into the intense, internal world of a small group of resistance fighters (including Simone Signoret, Lino Ventura, and Serge Reggiani). Sunday, November 26th mins 1969 France Digital Black and White Dr Tony Tracy, Huston School of Film & Digital Media, NUI Galway, will introduce this screening. image: jym-factory.com IFI FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL FAMILY SCREENING Sunday, November 26th Director: Lola Doillon 94 mins 2016 France Digital Age recommendation: 10+ festival Guests Agnès Jaoui Agnès Jaoui is a multi-award winning actress, screenwriter, director and singer.
