2 Last meeting s speakers - 10 May, 2012 Man Behind the Badge Roger Fairam Roger was one of two members who agreed to give brief Behind the Badge presentations foowing the unfortunate iness of guest speaker, John Moncrieff. Roger spoke of his ife in Engand before he migrated to Austraia many years ago. A Jordi, having been born in Newcaste-on-Tyne, Roger grew up in London. He hated schoo and eft at the age of sixteen. Subsequenty, he became and articed accountant and quaified through attending night schoo, as did many of his contemporaries. Roger was a keen sportsman and heaviy invoved in the sport of rowing. He met his wife, Sue, on a bind date in Engand and ater married her in Austraia. Sue had traveed to Engand on the Fairstar but arrived with two broken ankes after a severe fa on board ship during the voyage to Engand. As we as working in accounting and auditing, Roger worked in the stee industry and ater in buiding suppies and in property maintenance. He has aso been secretary of a sma pubicay isted company. Roger is once again working as an accountant and deveoping a new business in Brighton. Roger and Sue have four chidren, two of whom are married and three grandchidren. Robert Ward Cinema Industry has been aive and we for over 115 years. Lumiere Brothers invented the Camera and Projector in Paris. Aong with others they came up with 35mm fim which was decided to be the industry standard over 9mm and 16mm. It ran at 16 frames per second and that s why it was caed the Fickers or the Ficks. When Sound came in in the 30 s the speed was too sow and it was increased to 24 frames per second, fast enough to hande the sound and yet not too fast to waste the costy fim. We have been that way for the ast 80 years. Then aong came Digita when Texas Instruments, a US company finay got the quaity to be better than fim with 2000 ine resoution (HD TV 1080). Cinemas started experimenting with Digita about 5 years ago and during that time quaity has improved more and more and prices are getting ess. It is going to cost each cinema screen about $100,000 to insta a singe digita projector and say take Southand with 15 screens there goes $1.5m I am on the fim industry board which has been deaing with the financia aspects of the probem for the past 4 years, the parties saving the big money are the Hoywood studios who currenty pay about $ each time they deiver 35mm fim to a cinema. Now it wi cost them with Digita about $50.00 and soon it wi be cheaper via sateite. Our Industry body has negotiated with the 6 Major Hoywood studios to pay around 75% of that cost, removing a massive burden from the cinema owners. A Digita fie contains one fim is about 300 megabytes. Now with 3D it Jumps to 600 megabytes. Famous fimmaker Peter Jackson in 6 months time wi be reeasing the HOBBITT in 3D at 48 Frames per second, a fie of 1.2 terabytes. Where does it stop? Steven Spieberg is now doing a new movie at 66 Frames per second amazing quaity. Now comes a bigger expense with 3D Sound and I m now equipping the first cinema in Austraia with this system of 3D Sound, an extra 25,000 watts, extra 42 speakers and a cost of $100,000 pus...the resut is AWESOME. What s Hoywood doing about it New Movies that are reay ooking great. Last week THE AVENGERS broke a records, over $40m in ess than two weeks in Austraia. To ook forward to - Johnny Depp in Dark Shadows Sacha Barren Cohen in a augh a minute The DICTATOR. The most awaited fim Ridey Scotts Prometheus. Not to be outdone Christopher Noan brings bursting out of the digita screens The Dark Knight Rises, Batmans Back. And Batman not to be outdone has his mate foowing in The Amazing Spiderman. Disney and Pixar have for the Famiies BRAVE a fim about the Scottish Highanders. And if you want a rea augh don t miss Mark Wahberg in TED. There s aso MIB3 and Oiver Stones SAVAGES. Baz Lurhman brings to ife THE GREAT GATSBY. And for the end of the year two amazing fims which I had the opportunity to view section Ang Lees THE LIFE OF PI and Peter Jacksons THE HOBBITT in HFR3D and for those that ove the Theatre Hugh Jackman and Les Miserabes. A Heath Message from Tony Rouse At the end of the Behind the Badge presentations from Roger Fairam and PP Robert Ward, Tony Rouse deivered a heath message to a Members. Tony, a diabetic since around 1990 spoke of ife with diabetes which, he says, affects more Austraians than cancer, stroke and heart disease combined. He spoke of the changes observed by others in his personaity and moods which ed to their encouraging him to have tests which resuted in his diagnosis with type 1 diabetes. Since then he had to sef-inject four times a day to contro his insuin eves. Tony says it is now fifteen years since he has tasted an ice cream and ten years since he has had a beer. He encouraged a Members to have the bood tests that check for and diagnose diabetes. There is no idea Cub mode, but we know that successfu Cubs share some things in common. So if we were to buid an idea Cub or be bod enough to ook at our own Cub and say et s make this great, where woud we start? Let s take a ook. A Starting Point Some might think that members woud be the first pace you start. Let s get ots and ots of members. But the truth is, you coud start with hundreds of members, but uness you engage them and give them some sort of feeing that what they are doing is worthwhie, you woud quicky ose them. A Cub with even a few members can quicky grow if it has purpose and passion. These are the two ingredients any Cub must find if it wishes to meet its potentia. Uneashing Passion A Cub that has purpose and passion has a message, a vibe, an image, a cuture and a cimate straight away that it can convey to the outside word. It says we LOVE doing THIS and immediatey positions the Cub as the pace to be if others ove doing THIS as we. Ask peope anywhere about what sort of peope they ike to meet and they wi often te you peope who are passionate - they are inspired by them. The same goes for organisations - peope are more attracted to organisations that are passionate and inspire the same in them. The secret for every Cub is to ensure your Cub s passions aren t ocked away ony to be seen once a year during a momentary project and to ensure that those inspired by your passion are abe to deveop and pursue their own passions when they join your Cub. There is no better way to increase passion in your Cub than to hep those with fresh inspiration to pursue something they are passionate about. Make it a priority to aunch the dreams of your new members and you wi ikey soon see not just more new members, but more inspired and passionate ong-term members. Convey A Purpose What is the point of your Cub? If you can t answer this question in a simpe sentence or two, et aone a word or two, then you ve probaby ost the attention of those on the outside. Whether it s stating that your Cub is the most efficient and effective way to give back, that giving has never been this much fun!, or that you provide A cose network of peope who hep each other make the word a better pace, your purpose shoud be a cear reason why others woud want to be part of your Cub. Show Your Most Attractive Side Think of any advertisement you ve recenty read, watched on T.V., heard on the radio or have seen out and about. Marketeers have worked hard to bring you information wrapped in an attractive packaging with a cear ca to action. They convince you that a simpe formua exists: You + The Product = Idea You. And they re smart about it they pitch the message to the target audience they wish to attract using attractive modes that their target audience can reate to or wish to emuate. In advertising Rotary, we need to be doing the same use attractive depictions of our product to attract our target audience. We won t capture an ideaistic and community minded 27-year od femae who has a passion for ending poio by showing her pictures of someone she cannot reate to who is depicted doing things that don t inspire her. Think about where you are depicting this image too - it s not just your website, but your pubic projects, cub meetings, brochures and introductory materia, socia media and everything ese you do. If it ain t attractive, it ain t idea. Aways ask, is there a better aternative? If nothing ese, remember that big warm smies, happiness and a wecoming attitude are things that everyone can reate to, are attractive and are products that most peope woud ove to possess themseves. Incude them in everything! Don t Forget a Ca to Action Don t forget to ask peope to come and visit, to share their dreams with you, to vounteer aongside Rotary in your projects, to take part in your initiatives, to come and speak at your Cub, to ike your Cub on Facebook and subscribe to your news feeds or to simpy join your Cub. It A Adds Up to a Simpe Formua Decide what you want to be great at. Be passionate about being great at it. Do great things and do them often. Show great peope the great things you do and invite them (in great ways!) to do great things too....and that s the simpe formua to an idea Cub. Yours in Rotary Keith Rya District Governor Rotary District 9800 Environmenta Print congratuates the Rotary Cub of Brighton on their sustainabe approach to printed materia. t f steve@enviroprint.net.au
