Tom Burke (War and Peace, The Musketeers) also features in Carrie Cracknell s critically acclaimed new production. A flat in Ladbroke Grove, West London When Hester Collyer is found by her neighbours in the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt, the story of her tempestuous affair with a former RAF pilot and the breakdown of her marriage to a High Court judge begins to emerge. The Big Tickle Presents THE VERY PERRY SHOW Friday 9th September, 8pm Tickets 10/ 8 (includes 1 development contribution) Called a "major talent" at The 2015 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Kate Perry presents a happy hour of acutely observed and quirky monologues reflecting her unique view on life. She portrays a wonderful array of characters ranging from five to seventy years old. Whether it s Mary Peachy-Bender, an Amish woman with shoofly pie envy, Susie Hedley-Simmons, a twelve year old who takes control of her mother s medication or Carmel, a celebrity obsessed old age pensioner. Following the success of Tim McGarry s Irish History Lesson, Tim returns with a brand new stand-up show about our history. In 2016 we have been inundated with dramas and documentaries about the meaning of There has been much chin stroking and nodding of heads sagely. Tim McGarry doesn t want that. He wants to give you jokes. What are the funny myths and facts about 1916? Why do we take our history so seriously? And how can we stop taking it seriously? Expect myths to be exploded and sacred cows to be slaughtered but above all expect laughs. Powerstone Entertainment presents THE LANTERN MAN by Jane Coyle, Directed by Stephen Beggs Saturday 17th September, 8pm Tickets 10/ 8 (includes 1 development contribution) A powerful new drama from the writer of the award-winning play The Suitcase. Set in Dublin, months before the Easter Rising. Wounded in body and spirit, Johnny McGrath returns from the Western Front to a city he barely recognises. Thirty-two years after the original release of the film the Wireless Mystery Theatre presents Ghostbusters... Retro! Imagining how it might have been originally transmitted if it were a 30's radio play, with live sound-effects, music, and period commercials. First broadcast in October 1939 on the American CBS, the original radio-play from which Harold Ramis largely plagiarised his 1984 film was the surprise hit of the 2014 Belfast Comedy Festival. 9 The Royal Opera presents BELLINI NORMA Thursday 29th September 2016, 7.15pm Tickets: 14/ 10 (includes 1 development donation) This new production of Norma for The Royal Opera is distinguished by a cast of internationally renowned singers. Àlex Ollé directs, bringing a modern edge to this timeless tale of love, rivalry and betrayal, set against a backdrop of war driven by the extremes of a fanatically religious society. Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano conducts this stunning cast including soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Norma with Joseph Calleja as her secret lover, Pollione, Sonia Ganassi as the priestess Adalgisa and Brindley Sherratt as Norma's father Oroveso. WOMEN OF THE WORLD FESTIVAL Friday 30th Sept and Saturday 1st Oct Free The Women of the World Festival (WOW) returns to The Playhouse on Friday 30th September (school's day) and Saturday 1st October (open day). Now in it's 4th year in Derry - Londonderry, the festival celebrates the achievements of women and girls locally, nationally and globally. WOW originated at the Southbank Centre in London and has now become a global movement with festivals happening around the world. On Saturday 1st October a range of workshops, talks and classes take place, most of which are free to the general public. The festival is for all genders, nationalities and ages. 10 Photo SA/ alchetron.com FIELD DAY LECTURE - A TERRIBLE STATE OF CHASSIS Lecture by Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, Introduction by Emer Nolan, Q&A with Michael Farell Friday 30th September, 8pm Tickets 10/ 8 Seamus Deane gave the first of the annual lecture series in his honour last year. Founder and editor of the Field Day Review, he has made his poetry, fiction, scholarship and criticism, particularly in latter years in the form of the essay, a meditation on the need, in a debased political system, to follow the dictum: When in Rome, do as the Greeks do. His work is not, as he himself has stated, devoted to a rewriting of the Irish past but to a writing of the Irish present. ` Bernadette Devlin McAliskey transformed political resistance in the Northern Irish statelet by spearheading a socialist, anti-sectarian, mass movement for change. Her celebrity began when she was elected to Westminster for Mid Ulster in 1969 then the youngest woman MP ever and when she became a leading organizer on the barricades in Derry during the Battle of the Bogside.

11 YOU MIGHT AS WELL LIVE National Poetry Day Thursday 6th October, 8pm Tickets: 8 (includes 1 development contribution) by Sean McMahon Directed by Ken McCormack Dorothy Parker and Edna St Vincent Millay were two of the most gifted of American literary ladies of the first half of the twentieth century. They both wrote verse, Dorothy s often wickedly satirical. What follows is the slick, witty and sometimes caustic exchange between the two women as they meet somewhere on the way to infinity. Off The Cuff Community Theatre Group present THE BURIAL AT THEBES Saturday 8th October, 8pm Tickets 8 (includes 1 development contribution) A translation of Antigone, by Seamus Heaney A Northern Ireland city, post the troubles Antigone and Ismene are the last of their family. Both their brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices,have just been killed in a battle. Their uncle Creon has taken control of the city and outlaws the burial of Polyneices. Antigone s appalling dilemma is whether to obey Creon and offend the gods, or follow her heart and plunge her accursed family into a fresh cycle of violence by burying her brother. Off The Cuff Community Theatre Group is a cross community and multi -cultural group who are working to improve the quality of the lives of their community through the medium of drama. She s lonely as hell, in a house that won t sell, with no kids, no husband and a job that s deathly boring. So tonight, she s got a date with a bottle of pink fizz and a bowl of pink pills and she s going to go out in style. But her romance with death is rudely interrupted by an intruder, a nosy neighbour and a policeman a tall, handsome policeman. In her internationally-acclaimed comedy hit, Nuala McKeever delivers a poignant, hilarious, cocktail that has wowed audiences from the USA to India. MPI bands presents LUKA BLOOM WITH SUPPORT FROM ANNE RYNNE Saturday 15th October, 8pm Tickets 17 (includes 1 development donation) Luka Bloom is regarded as one of Ireland s best-respected contemporary folk artists, having produced 20 albums since the 1970s, Bloom continues to push the boundaries of what his music can do, and the 2012/13 Heartman Tour proves he is still making provocative, poetic music that delves deep into the intricacies of the human soul and pulls out the nuggets and puts them in a song. Like many who write songs, Luka s orchestra of choice is the guitar. What makes his career a little different is his constant search for a new voice within the guitar. The guitar is the landscape on which the song is created, and he is forever probing that landscape for new inspiration. Exceptional Irish News

13 The Royal Opera presents MOZART COSÍ FAN TUTTE Monday 17 October, 6.30pm Tickets: 14/ 10 (includes 1 development contribution) How much do you love your partner? How much do you trust them? And can they trust you? Mozart s classic opera Così fan tutte puts two pairs of lovers to the test with distinctly unexpected results. For this new production, director Jan Philipp Gloger creates a richly theatrical world as the playground for this quirky comedy, where two men try to woo each other s partners for a bet. This lively, youthful and imaginative take on one of the world's best-loved operas is performed by a cast of rising stars conducted by Semyon Bychkov. 15 The Royal Ballet presents MACMILLAN ANASTASIA BALLET IN THREE ACTS Friday 4th November, 7.15pm Tickets: 14/ 10 (includes 1 development contribution) An identity in crisis; a country in revolution. Anastasia is a ballet about one of the great historical mysteries of the 20th century, only recently solved. One of Kenneth MacMillan's first creations on becoming Director of The Royal Ballet in 1970, Anastasia is a dramatic and haunting exploration of Anna's nightmare of memory and identity. To music by Tchaikovsky and Martinů, we follow the events leading to the murder of a family, and Anna's confused dreams or memories. A powerful, psychological challenge for the principal ballerina, this is a rare opportunity to see a landmark ballet by a major choreographer. SPECIAL ENCORE SCREENING Kabosh in association with Diversity Challenges present GREEN & BLUE Directed by Paula McFetridge Saturday 5th November, 8pm Tickets 10/ 8 (includes 1 development contribution) Green & Blue explores the realities faced by the individuals who patrolled the border during the height of the conflict. This new multi-media production looks at the person behind the uniform and the different experiences of two individuals on either side of a man-made line in the ground. 16 The Royal Opera presents OFFENBACH LES CONTES D HOFFMANN Tuesday 15th November, 6.15pm Tickets 14/ 10 (includes 1 development donation) Offenbach's masterpiece, is a favourite with audiences. Created by Academy Award-winning film director John Schlesinger, this production brings alive a 19th-century world of romance, comedy, mystery and menace. At the centre of these extraordinary tales of clockwork dolls, magical glasses, ghostly voices and sensual courtesans is the vivid imagination of the drunken Romantic poet Hoffmann. The music includes the famous Barcarolle and the stunning showpiece numbers are perfect vehicles for the vocal virtuosity of Sofia Fomina as the clockwork doll Olympia, Christine Rice as the courtesan Giulietta, and Sonya Yoncheva as Hoffmann's last love Antonia. How did he end up this way? Are you born a rosé wine drinker or through a series of unfortunate incidents do you grow to be one? How many times can you lie to a barman with the phrase...and a rosé for the Mrs.? All of the big questions will be answered in this hilarious new show from Masons Comedy regular MC and recent Blame Game panelist Peter E Davidson, fresh from its premiere at the Belfast Comedy Festival. Il trovatore is one of the great operas of the Romantic period, a story of passion and blood, love and vengeance, disaster and murder. Fire and snow in the landscape echo the cruelty and love of the story: soldiers and gypsies clash, a mother reveals a terrible secret and two men are engaged in a deadly fight for one woman. 20 COMING UP IN 2017 The Royal Ballet presents MCGREGOR WOOLF WORKS Saturday 11th February 2017, 7.15pm Tickets 14/ 10 (includes 1 development contribution) The pioneering literary work of Virginia Woolf is the inspiration for multi-award-winning choreographer Wayne McGregor's brilliant triptych for The Royal Ballet. McGregor has long been at the cutting edge of ballet, working with collaborators from across the artistic world, and in this critically acclaimed work he combines themes from three of Woolf's landmark novels Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves with elements of her letters, essays and diaries. Acclaimed British composer Max Richter (Infra, Sum and Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons) creates a specially commissioned score incorporating electronic and live music. First choreographed to Tchaikovsky's great musical score by Marius Petipa in Russia in 1890, The Sleeping Beauty has wonderful ensembles, solos including the Rose Adage as Princess Aurora meets her suitors, and of course the concluding celebratory dances for the happy union of prince and princess. The designs by Oliver Messell, were restored and updated for this production by Peter Farmer. The rich evocations of the royal court, the panoramic journey of the prince to the overgrown castle and the colourful characters in this famous fairytale make this Sleeping Beauty a spectacle like no other. 23 COMING UP IN 2017 The Royal Opera presents BALANCHINE JEWELS Tuesday 11 April 2017, 7.15pm Tickets 14/ 10 (includes 1 development donation) George Balanchine s evocation of the sparkle of emeralds, rubies and diamonds is a brilliant ballet classic. The French Romantic music of Fauré provides the impetus for the subtlety and lyricism of Emeralds, while the fire of Rubies comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York. Grandeur and elegance complete the ballet with the splendour of Imperial Russia and the peerless music of Tchaikovsky in Diamonds. Jewels is a masterclass in the many luminous facets of classical ballet and indeed of The Royal Ballet itself: the virtuoso choreography of Balanchine, the intensity of the soloists and the precision of the entire Company. 24 COMING UP IN 2017 The Royal Opera VERDI OTHELLO OPERA IN FOUR ACTS Wednesday 28 June 2017, 7.15pm Tickets 14/ 10 (includes 1 development contribution) World-famous tenor Jonas Kaufmann makes his role debut as Otello in Verdi's passionate retelling of Shakespeare's great tragedy of jealousy, deception and murder. Soprano Maria Agresta will be his Desdemona and baritone Ludovic Tézier his nemesis Iago in a new LIVE SCREENING production by Olivier Award- winning director Keith Warner. A major work of the opera repertory, Verdi's Otello draws on the full forces of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, the Royal Opera Chorus and this stellar line-up of principal singers, with exquisite duets, emotionally potent solo numbers and thrilling choruses.

31 EXHIBITIONS 'WHO FRAMED SEAN KEDDY' Tuesday 6th-Thursday 22nd September An upcoming exhibition by local artist Sean Keddy which takes a look at the relationships we share with fictional figures and icons presented in popular culture. It also explores how we identify with these characters in real life, a concept portrayed through a series of illustrative portraits. The exhibition launch takes place on Tuesday 6th September at 7pm.
