1 March/April 2010 The Division of Preparatory Studies Enriching lives through musical experience! GREETINGS! From the director, Mary Hawn Always spring! Always the season of music. With the anticipation that the occasional day of warmth brings or the remembrance of things gone before, in the occasional blast of a north wind, spring seems to me, the season of music. With the promise of the bud and the fragrance of the greenery remembering itself, spring is indeed the season of music. There is a connection with the past, an awareness of the present, and the hint of the future in this season, where preparation is fulfilled, blossoming is celebrated, and hope is renewed. Lessons nurture the seeds of ability; the sun and the rain of practice alternately nourish the growing skill, bringing forth the fruit of commitment and effort. It is the beginning of a cycle that renews itself for the lifetime of the music-maker. Some think beyond that lifetime! The hope, which is the season of spring, is emblematic of the belief in results, that staying with a task produces. And when one level of skill is achieved, another opportunity for achievement presents itself with unerring consistency. There is always spring and there is only spring. Music is never exhausted - whether in one s continuing to explore the vast and kindly repertoire of previous eras, or the recent and current works of living composers. (And yes, it may be exhausting but only in the most temporary of ways like a snowfall in April.) From the level of early childhood music classes through preliminary instruction in early levels of instrument study, through recitals, festivals and examinations, for some, faculties of music leading to teaching or performing careers, for others concert-going preparation, it is never over. It is always spring in the study of music, with more buds of more flowers with deeper colours and greater complexities of pattern. With music it is always spring and music, itself, is always a wellspring - a wellspring whose waters quench a thirst beyond our knowing. What can compare to the study of music in sheer joy of possibility in individual growth and communal sharing? I simply don t know. Happy music making! Happy Spring!
2 APPRECIATION! Appreciation is continuously and deservedly extended to the teachers, students, accompanists and clinicians who make our masterclass and recitals so vital and dynamic (and busy!). The value of these opportunities cannot be overstated. Thanks to all participants, in all capacities. STUDENT RECITALS, March 7/21, 2010 and April 18, 2010 featured the performances of ninety-five and one hundred and two students respectively. TAKE NOTICE! We are so pleased to bring to your attention the following past and future events: The choir of St James Presbyterian Church performed Easter Canticle and Endless Dawning, Endless Day, two new anthems by Mary Hawn, on Easter Sunday, April 4, The Joie de Vivre Choir Spring Concert with conductor, Helga Anderson & accompanist, Ross Houston was held on April 24 in St John s College Chapel. The choir will also be performing in Steinbach on May 4, and at the Rady Centre on May 30. On April 25th Bennet Charter, Maddy Hildebrand, Chris Kayler and Steve Melnyk presented "8 hands, 2 pianos", a concert featuring Duet, Duo, and 8-hand music. A Celebration Of Real Life ~ 2 Piano Concert featuring Lubomyr Melnyk & Deborah Judith took place Saturday, May 1st at the Canadian Mennonite University. CONGRATULATIONS!
