3 WELCOME TO SLUSH MUSIC 2017 Slush Music is a community of the entrepreneurial minds in the music industry. We re bringing both, the music and the tech, industries under one roof to discuss and find opportunities. In the end, we serve the next generation of music entrepreneurs by tearing down obstacles between music and tech. Slush Music was founded in 2016 to take over the music scene in the name of Slush. SLUSH Partially melted snow or ice: the snow on the ground was turning into brown slush A fun, intimate gathering of entrepreneurs In fall 2008, a small group of Finnish entrepreneurs got together over a pint of beer. What started there, became an intimate gathering of two hundred people a few months later. As a product of Nordic dark humor, the event was named Slush after the dark, cold and slushy time of the year it was organized in. Although Slush has since grown to become one of the leading startup and technology conferences in the world, the non-profit philosophy behind the event remains: Slush exists to help the next generation of great, world-conquering companies forward. Slush Music follows the same philosophical path as Slush does. This Survival Guide gives you an overview of the two days of Slush Music The forthcoming 48-hour frenzy features three stages full of exhilarating program, startups, an intensive pitching competition, meetings, side events, parties, dinners and workshops. All this goes on inside the walls of the still so magnificent, old Cable Factory. All the volunteers, music tech entrepreneurs and music enthusiasts have worked hard to make this year s event possible. 4 SLUSH STATE OF MIND Slush is all about gathering people from all around the world together to share their passion and enthusiasm for entrepreneurship. We want all Slush events to be 100% positive experiences for all of our attendees from the beginning till the end. This is why we do not accept any kind of disrespectful behaviour at any of our events. CODE OF CONDUCT By receiving your Slush Pass you are expected to respect all fellow attendees regardless of their gender, race, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability or other aspects of what we look like, where we come from and who we are. Disrespectful behaviour includes, but is not limited to: Verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination related to gender, gender identityand expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age or religion. Deliberate intimidation. Sustained disruption of talks or other events. Inappropriate physical contact. Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviour. Attendees violating these rules may be expelled from Slush at the discretion of the organizers. Got a hang of it? Perfect! Let s celebrate entrepreneurship together: equally, honestly and respectfully. WHAT TO DO IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG? Sometimes things don t go as planned. If something disturbing happens to you or you see something disturbing happening at the event, please reach out to our Security or our team. We ve put a lot of time and effort this year into making Slush events better and safer. Our zero tolerance is not just words, every violator will be expelled from the event. 4

5 CLAIM YOUR BADGE IN ADVANCE To get straight into business at Slush Music, we highly recommend you to claim your Slush Music or Combo Badge in advance. Please have your ID and your ticket code ready when you arrive at any Badge Claim point. You ll receive a ticket code before Nov 24. If you are coming to pick up your friend s badge you need to have your friend s ID and, if possible, the ticket code. If you want to pick up more than 5 badges for your organization, the order should be made at least 48 hours in advance. The pick-up takes place between Nov at Maria 01 (Lapinlahdenkatu 16, Helsinki). Order the badges by sending a list of names and badge types to badges@slush.org. 6 HOW TO GET HERE Slush Music is held at the old Cable Factory (Kaapelitehdas) in southern Helsinki. The address of the venue is Tallberginkatu 1, Helsinki. The doors for Slush Music are open from 9 am to 6 pm on both days, Tue Nov 28 and Wed Nov 29. In order to enter, remember to wear your wristband and badge! TRANSPORTATION The venue is located close to the city center of Helsinki, thus there are many different means for arriving there. We highly recommend all our guests to use public transportation. You can plan your local travel on Google Maps or on the website of the local transportation provider, HSL on reittiopas.fi/en/. The best means to arrive to the Cable Factory (Kaapelitehdas) are tram, metro, bus, taxi, car, or by foot. Tram The tram number eight (8) passes right in front of the Cable factory and operates throughout the days. The tram goes through Kallio and Töölö, pass by our Opera House, thus not directly from the city center of Helsinki. Metro The closest metro station is Ruoholahti, from where you must walk for 9 minutes in order to arrive to the venue. You can also jump in the tram number eight in front of the metro station in case the weather is just too much. Bus Another option is to take any bus leaving from Kamppi shopping center towards Espoo and stop in Ruoholahti. Busses 20X, 21V, 102T, 103T pass closer by Kaapelitehdas (name of the stop is Salmisaari), just ask the driver and he ll stop. There is additional public transport taking our guests back to the city center after the Day 1 Afterparty on Tuesday night. Cars You can also arrive to the Cable Factory by car, the closest parking hall being under Ruoholahti shopping center. The prices for parking are pretty high and the parking hall is crowded especially during the weekdays, so we wouldn t recommend to take this option. DriveNow -cars You can also use DriveNow Car Sharing to go around the city quickly and easily. 150 BMW and MINI cars are parked all over Helsinki area: take a car whenever you need one! At the end of your journey, simply leave the car to residential spots within the Helsinki business area. You can also pick a DriveNow car at Helsinki Airport. Taxis Taxis are available through Helsinki tax service, on call at or by using Taxi Helsinki mobile app (available at Google Play and Itunes Store). A taxi rank is in front of the Ruoholahti metro station. 6

If you have any questions or feedback, say hi to anyone wearing a white Slush Music crew T-shirt. The Info Team members know it all and have answers to all your questions, you can find them at the Info Desk and shuffling around the venue. There is one Info Desk at the venue, right next to the entrance to the main hall (Merikaapelihalli). Info desks open Tue Nov 28 Wed Nov 29 9 am 6 pm 9 am 6 pm CLOAKROOMS Cloakrooms are located near the entrance at the Cable Factory. The cloakrooms are free of charge, but please note that the cloakrooms are not meant for storing luggage or other large items due to limited capacity. The cloakrooms are open from 9 am to 6 pm on both days. We suggest you take a picture of the cloakroom tag in case you were to lose it.there s staff at the cloakroom during the opening hours. However, please note that Slush Music is not responsible for items left in the cloakroom. Lost and founds can be asked for from the cloakroom, after the event all lost and founds will be delivered to Suomen Löytötavara. FIRST AID There is first aid service at the venue in case of accidents (see location from the map). In case of an emergency, call the emergency number 112. After that, let the staff know so they can clear the way for the arriving help. If you notice anything dangerous or suspicious at the event, do not hesitate to contact the staff. You can ask or report about security related issues from the security staff as well. We want to make you feel safe and secure. 7

8 GENERAL INFO WE RE HERE FOR YOU FOOD AND DRINKS There are two food trucks in the main hall (Merikaapelihalli) serving food for our guests. They are open all day during the event s opening hours. Prices vary from 5 to 15 euros. Food options at Slush Music this year emphasize the use of local and organic ingredients. There are a few options on the list and the food vendors have vegetarian dishes as well. All food disposables at Slush events are biodegradable and belong to the organic waste. Coffee and tea are served for no charge throughout the day in the main hall, in Jazz and Piano Bars. Water stations can be found around the venue. We serve locally produced and filtered Thoreau water. Locally produced means that we use Finnish tap water it is ranked as one of the best in the world and filter and chill it on the spot. Tap water is an environmentally friendly choice and Finnish tap water is fresh and 100% drinkable. There are biodegradable water cups to drink from. After use, cups belong to the organic waste. Please note that there are no water bottles at the event. Feel free to bring your own reusable bottle with you! #BYOB SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability is one of our core values, and we actively explore ways to decrease the ecological footprint of the event. Sustainability has been integrated into various aspects of the event production, such as favoring recycled materials in venue props and collaborating with like-minded companies. There are several recycling spots located all over the venue. Recycling spots can be recognized from black signs which say Raw material collection. Here you can recycle incinerable waste, organic waste, bottles/ cans, paper and cardboard. If you have something else to recycle, ask help from a Sustainability volunteer next to the raw material collection. Please note that we use only biodegradable disposables at Slush events and these belong to the organic waste. We co-operate with a local partner who helps us to make best use of the waste such as creating energy. 8

10 AT THE VENUE AREAS At Slush Music there are several areas for you to explore and where talks and discussions take place. There is program running in the main hall (Merikaapelihalli), Puristamo space, Muu art-gallery, Hima&Sali restaurant and in other smaller locations inside the Cable Factory. James Brown Stage The stage in the main hall is seated and features all the main keynotes, firesides, panel discussions, and all kinds of shows. Donna Summer Stage The Puristamo space is designed like Donna Summer, where pitching competition, firesides, and other talks take place during the days. In the night, Donna Summer hosts Music Tech Fest s live experience and the evening disco. Speaker Studio Speaker Studio is for longer and more intimate discussions and is located in Muu ar-gallery right in front of the main entrance to the Cable Factory. Meeting Area This space is located upstairs on the balcony. Tables for meetings can be booked through the matchmaking tool. Media Area This is the quiet working space for journalists and other media representatives. Access only with Media Pass. Radio Café The Radio Café space is the location for this year s Radio Bar hosted in collaboration with Music Finland and Radio Helsinki. There are live gigs and live broadcasts going on throughout the days. Hima & Sali This is the restaurant space next to the main hall and Puristamo space, where some workshops and sideevents take place. 10

11 SLUSH MUSIC PROGRAM The program at Slush Music is finely curated and thought out thoroughly. In 2017, the main theme is Reimagine Music that is meant to leave space for the imagination of each guest. At Slush Music, we re talking about the current state and the upcoming years of the industry from many different perspectives. The stage program is divided into more specific tracks that will help you find what you re looking for from Slush Music. TRACKS Industry Geek Following this track guaranties that you attend all the deepest music industry discussions, hear the most intriguing keynotes and see the most interesting speakers. True industry geeks came here to learn, so don t get afraid of some of the trickier topics! Them Rockstars This track is for all the rockstars attending the event that leads you through music creation, performance and other related topics. Marketing Monsters Are marketing and branding your passions? This tracks takes you into the world of music, media, marketing and branding by introducing the latest advancements in the field. Back to the Future We re taking you on a time travel through the future of the music industry. VR, AI, blockchain and what not? Silicon Valley Startups, tech, entrepreneurship that s what the Silicon Valley is made of. This track consists of the most interesting stories told by founders and the Slush Music 20 pitching competition. Come to Party Yeaah, just go and listen to the truly important talks, mingle during the breaks, and hear all the gigs. 11

16 SLUSH MUSIC 20 Slush Music 20 it the pitching competition for the bold. This is the place where new, courageous, and inspirational music entrepreneurs step on stage and pitch their ways to the minds of the jury. There are great prizes for the winners, such as legal services and fast tracks to acceleration, but most importantly it s the fame and glory that matters. Pitching on Slush Music stage makes the startups seen in the eyes of investors, accelerators, potential customers, and product users. This year, we have four different juries in the competition and the 20 participating startups are divided into four batches accordingly. One jury represents the US markets, European markets, Nordic-Baltics and one represents labels as investors. The pitching competition will be opened with a keynote by Fred Davis, the rainmaker of Spotify, who ll announce the winner in the end of the first day as well. The 20 startups are already chosen (they can be seen on music.slush.org/startups/) and all the pitches will be heard during the first day of Slush Music, on Tue Nov 28, on Donna Summer stage. Come and chill with amazing, like-minded people, live music and cool drinks. Access with Slush Music badge and wristband remember to claim your badge in advance. There is a pre-badge claim point at the party, so you can claim your badge also there before entering. The pre-badge claim is open from 9 pm to 11 pm. SLUSH MUSIC 2017 DAY 1 AFTERPARTY Tue Nov 28 9 pm 2 am Cable Factory (Kaapelitehdas) When the official stage program at Slush Music ends, the venue is transformed into a wonderland of music, lights and unexpected encounters. The Slush Music Day 1 Afterparty is held at the Slush Music venue at the Cable Factory. You can access the party with your Slush badge and wristband. The day after, the venue is back in the conference mode. There is music in the main hall (Merikaapelihalli) and the Puristamo space. Merikaapelihalli is for live music acts, such as Rein and $now, Puristamo space for DJs and Music Tech Fest s final performance of their five-day long hackathon. 18 PARTIES & SIDE EVENTS SIDE EVENTS Slush week paints the whole city! Originally a two-day event, Slush has now become an entire week of exhilarating program around the Helsinki metropolitan area. The week is kicked off by Slush Music. In addition to the events organized by Slush, so called Official Slush Side Events, there are dozens of industry and theme -specific gatherings diversifying the experience for Slush attendees. 19 WHAT S NEW THIS YEAR So many things are new this year at Slush Music! First of all, the second edition of Slush Music has extended into a two-day event. The venue is the same, but the many other things have changed. Unfortunately this year, we do not give access to Slush for all Slush Music guests, but there are many Combo Pass holders among our guests. Combo Passes allow their holders to attend all the events held during the Slush week. Combo pass holders have different wristbands as well! Last year we organized a Slush Music startup showcase, which is now turned into Slush Music 20 pitching competition. This means, that we re offering so much more than just fame and glory for the winning startups. There are great prizes from even greater partners. Workshops we had last year as well, but the palette is much wider in There are several workshops on both days that require pre-registration through this website: Afterparties in general is an old concept at Slush, but this year Slush Music takes them to a whole new level. In addition to having live acts on stage and DJs playing sweet tunes, we host our very own jam session. The jam takes place on Tue Nov 28 at 10 pm and it is hosted by one of the most legendary drummers on planet Earth, Brady Blade. Here our guests can grab their instruments and jam together with other guests. Finally, we have our own Matchmaking tool to easen up the networking part of the event. This year we use the same platform used at Slush, which is developed by our inhouse team. With the tool you can see who s there, request meetings with other Slush Music goers, book meetings to our designated Meeting Area, and follow your schedule of the day. The matchmaking tool can be found on app.slush.org/matchmaking/. Although it is called an app, it is actually a website that we recommend to add on your phone. YOUR HELSINKI GUIDE Slush has it s very own Helsinki Guide for you to take a look at our beautiful, Northern capital. Helsinki is a hip city with loads of things to do, eventhough you d spend the most of your time inside the event venue, of course. There are tasty restaurants, cool cafés and bars, museums art galleries, nature and comfy beds all around the city. Slush Music s venue is located in the Southwestern part of the city center, but as Helsinki is quite compact of a city, it is not far from the center the beautiful Esplanade, groovy cafés and the Senate Square. It is extremely easy to get around the city with public transport, schedules for trams, trains, metro and busses can be found on reittiopas.fi/en/. Get to know Helsinki: slush.org/helsinki-guide Get to know your route to the event, the venue map and plan your schedule in advance. Pack comfortable shoes and plenty of business cards. Charge your laptop and phone! If you have a power bank, there is no harm to take it with you. Start following the #slushmusic feed in advance as well account! These are good channels to find out the latest news! Talk about Slush Music in advance. You never know who else is coming. DURING Arrive early in the morning to ensure you re in time for the opening show the first day. Arrive early to sessions. You ll have better seats, less queueing and a chance to catch up with others. Never skip lunch. Food brings people together. Remember to drink the world-class tap water from the water points around the venue Collect contact details and take notes on people you ve met. Try to collate the main points from each talk and discussion. Visit the startups at their booths. Join the discussion on social media during panels and keynotes. Follow #slushmusic High five a volunteer. Slush is non-profit, so most of the staff are volunteers they ll make you smile and wow! Join the afterparty, however tired you are. Everyone will be there. AFTER Contact the people you met. This is the point where acquaintances turn into valuable contacts. Use Slush Music as a reference point in contacting people you didn t get to meet, but would like to connect with. Share your learnings with your colleagues. Compare experiences with other attendees.
