Chetham s School of Music Chetham s is an exciting, contemporary Music School, offering a dynamic music programme to complement its cosmopolitan city location. With 290 students, aged 8 18, Chetham s is the largest Music School in the UK, and is the only Music School based in the North of England. What matters at Chets is talent, not background or ability to pay the School prides itself on accessibility, with 90% of students receiving financial support through the government s Music & Dance scheme. Over the years Chetham s has educated many outstanding pianists who have gone on to have international careers. Past students include Peter Donohoe, Wayne Marshall, Stephen Hough, Gwilym Simcock, Leon McCawley, Anna Markland (winner: BBC Young Musician), Jill Crossland, Sarah Nicholls, Paul Lewis, Timothy Horton, Graham Scott, Jonathan Scott, Robert Markham (Finalist: Tchaikovsky International Competition), and Ashley Wass (Finalist: Leeds International Competition). The quality of the teaching is first-rate The International Summer School & Festival This year marks the thirteenth year of the piano course at Chetham s, described by Piano Magazine as a Pianist s Paradise and the Manchester Evening News as a remarkable new event featuring a galaxy of star names, which has attracted large audiences from all over the world. Piano Magazine wrote that the seven- day programme of individual coaching, lectures and concerts could not have failed to satisfy even the most gluttonous and insatiable of piano enthusiasts. My new spiritual home! A wealth of international celebrities will join the Chetham s faculty for the thirteenth course, offering inspirational teaching and world class recitals. Along with the piano course, there are additional courses in improvisation, jazz, piano duets, composition (beginners and more advanced) and a young pianists course. The ever popular adult amateur course returns for both weeks. In 2012 a new course for harpsichord was established - this makes a welcome return on Part One, and the now firmly established organ course remains on Part Two.
With a faculty of over 60 distinguished tutors, six recital halls (with model D and B Steinways), over 100 practice rooms, on-site accommodation and meals, Chetham s has proved time and time again to be an outstanding course, a universal haven for everyone who loves the piano. The course is further enhanced with a new state-of-the-art building which was used for the first time in The practice facilities and teaching rooms are of exceptional standard together with four new exciting recital spaces. The course schedule of evening recitals and lectures again promises to be entertaining and thought-provoking, providing a balance and contrast to the one-to-one tuition which will take place during the morning and afternoon sessions each day. I now cannot imagine a summer without going to Chets! All accommodation is within the school. The atmosphere is made unique by the fact that faculty and participants dine and socialise together enabling everyone to feel very welcome so much so that there are many regulars who come every year. truly inspired Participants on the piano course will be assigned a personal teacher/s for the duration of the course. They will receive individual one to-one lessons totalling three hours, spread out over the five days of teaching, and will be part of a class of between four eight students. In addition, every teacher will give up to three one-hour workshop classes. These will include opportunities for performance and group discussions. There will also be opportunities to play in one or more of the student recitals which take place every day. enormously beneficial and inspirational Additional courses It is possible to study on several different courses during the summer school. Every course provides three hours of individual lessons and up to three one-hour workshop classes with the teacher. It is also possible to have less than the full three hours of lessons on any given course. Please tick the number of hours required on the application form if you do not wish to have all three hours. The improvisation course offers the opportunity to develop extemporising skills under the guidance of some of the world s leading authorities on keyboard improvisation - Douglas Finch and Harry Harris (Part One), Steve Berry and David Dolan (Part Two). The composition course is always very popular and this year we welcome some very distinguished composers to the faculty, including David Horne and Emma-Ruth Richards (Part One), and John McLeod and Emma-Ruth Richards (Part Two). Participants who have never studied composition or who have limited experience please tick the box for Beginner composition. Students may also study jazz piano with internationally acclaimed performers Nikki Iles and Harry Harris (Part One), and Steve Berry and Les Chisnall (Part Two). There will be intense individual study, workshops and opportunities for performance during the week.
very pleasant and friendly, positive atmosphere. The Adult Amateur course has proved very popular with enthusiastic pianists. All standards are welcome from approximately grade 5 to post grade 8. This all-encompassing course is united by everyone s love of the piano and the desire to be in a group of like-minded, supportive individuals. The daily workshops incorporate all levels of playing and everyone is encouraging and positive, regardless of the standard of repertoire. The intense individual lessons are complemented by the workshops and the opportunity to play in a small room reserved for this course in the evenings. encouraged to pursue my goals with renewed vigour. Organ Course First introduced in 2008, this popular course will be led by Christopher Stokes who was appointed Organist & Master of the Choristers of Manchester Cathedral in Christopher is head of Organ Studies at Chetham s School of Music. For participants with experience of playing organ, three hours of lessons, alongside workshops and opportunities to play in the glorious Manchester Cathedral make this a stimulating, inspirational course. If you are a beginner and would like to have a one-hour lesson, please tick the box for one-hour trial organ lesson on the application form. Do book early as space is very limited. Harpsichord Course This exciting new course was introduced in 2012 and will be led again by Charlotte Turner, who is on the faculty at Chetham s School of Music. The school houses several excellent harpsichords including a magnificent one made by Andrew Garlick. The course includes three hours of individual lessons and workshops. Both experienced players and novices are welcome to apply. If you would like to book just a one-hour trial lesson, please tick the box on the application form. Piano Duet Course This course gives the opportunity to study the wonderful repertoire for four hands in detail during three hours of lessons. Many of the faculty have great experience in this area and will offer thought provoking and practical help in perfecting the challenges unique to duettists. Applications are welcome from pre-formed duos only. the highlight of my year Young Pianists Course Now firmly established, this course is aimed at the younger pianist, of grade 5 or below. Regular workshops with other young pianists of a similar ability covering issues such as scales, sight reading, technical studies and aural will be scheduled. In addition to three hours of one-to-one tuition, there will be opportunities to play in student recitals. It is possible for enthusiastic but less experienced pianists to come on the course for a shorter time. Lessons are arranged to benefit each individual and if required, it is possible to attend and have intense study for just one day. Please contact the administrator for further details. Extra individual lessons It is possible to book extra lessons on one or more courses, simply by ticking the box on the application form. With such an inspiring faculty under one roof, many will want to take the opportunity for additional lessons.
Please indicate your preference on the application form. NB: no more than six hours may be booked on any one course. great boost to my selfconfidence Pastoral Care The care of the younger participants on the course is very well catered for, under the guidance of Liz Dewhurst, summer school Youth coordinator, on hand to help all under-18 s settle in and make friends. A team of house parents who are CRB cleared and have first aid training all help to make the course run smoothly. There are always many younger participants and in the words of one rather shy teenager, I m so glad I plucked up courage to come I just can t believe how incredibly friendly everyone is. Please make sure everyone knows that you will be made very welcome. See you next year! Once again we are thrilled to offer the opportunity to study Alexander lessons both group and individual and Eurythmics at a small additional cost. Early booking advised. We are delighted to offer the opportunity to experience An Introduction to tai chi on several mornings during Part One. Pianist and teacher Philip Smith is an experienced tai chi practitioner and he will gently guide you through this health-enhancing exercise. These sessions are free and no need to book just turn up and enjoy! Additionally there will be opportunities to visit the historic library at Chetham s. As all the tuition on the summer school is open to observers, participants may listen to lessons from as many other tutors on the course as they wish. amazing and rewarding event! Professional recordings of student performances We are delighted to be able to continue recording participant concerts with Farsight Records. A professionally produced CD recording is available for anyone who wishes to take up this exciting service. Please note that this facility is on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants wishing to take advantage of this should tick the appropriate box on the application form. I learned more in those 5 days than I have in the past year 4th Manchester International Concerto Competition for Young Pianists The 4th competition is once again fully integrated into the Chetham s International Summer School and Festival for Pianists. Anyone aged under 23 on 1 August 2013 is eligible to enter, provided they enrol as a participant on the Chetham s Summer School. All accepted participants will be heard in live auditions. Although there is one age category, there are special prizes for participants under the age of 17. If you wish to enter the competition please complete the relevant section of the application form. Prizes: First Prize: 1,000 Second Prize: 500 Third Prize: 300 Semi-finalists will receive prizes of 100 each In addition there are special prizes, to be awarded at the jury s discretion,
of 500, 300 and 200 for the best performances from candidates aged 16 or under. The winner of the competition will be offered a series of engagements and the opportunity to record a recital for CD. All finalists will be offered full scholarships to attend the 2014 Chetham s International Summer School and Festival for Pianists. In addition, it is hoped that there will be recital opportunities for the remaining finalists and also for some of the semi- finalists. Positive feedback and encouragement for all participants remains at the forefront of the event, where the emphasis has always been on inspiration, motivation and educational stimulus. It almost goes without saying that the discipline involved in preparing a complete piano concerto to a high standard is invaluable in itself.
