2 2 walk in my shoes Dr Alan Lourens, Head of School Beside the Dolphin Theatre, Crawley Campus

3 r ise 1 This year will see UWA celebrate one hundred years. For more than half of that time, the university has turned to the School of Music to enhance the life of the campus, providing a culturally enriching experience for the public, staff and students. Through our concerts have emerged several generations of some of the country s greatest musicians; members of every major orchestra in the country; winners of the ABC Young Performers Awards (and its predecessors); some of the finest music educators in the country; a host of musicologists, ethnomusicologists and academics; and lawyers, doctors, arts graduates and generations of the good and great that have shaped our society. Performance remains a key aspect of our teaching. Our Keyed Up! Recital Series, now home in our very own Callaway Music Auditorium, presents some of the worlds greatest pianists. We continue the expansion of our Artistry! Orchestral Series, this year including a performance of Stravinsky s masterwork Rite of Spring within a few days of its very own centenary, as well as other concerts featuring Paul Wright, and a new concert in conjunction with St Mary s Cathedral featuring acclaimed Australian Mezzo- Soprano Caitlin Hulcup who returns to Australia as part of a unique Artist in Residence Program. Our Vocal Program continues its renaissance with Opera Scenes, and the Guitar Ensemble builds on their outstanding concert in 2012 with performances in Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, and with UWA alumni and international guitar superstar Craig Ogden. Other alumni to perform in Centennial events include percussionist Paul Tanner, and performances from the UWA Centennial CD featuring faculty Suzanne Wijsman, Chris Tonkin and Nicholas Bannan, also the distinctive Winthrop Singers and, later in the year, the first UWA School of Music Messiah for many years. Our free Lunchtime Concerts, every Thursday during semester at 1:10pm in the Octagon Theatre, feature alumni, recent graduates and outstanding students. The new Callaway Series presents works by soloists and ensembles that are working towards meeting their coursework goals. So come down and hear the rising stars of classical music, and some already established in the firmament. I look forward to seeing you there! Dr Alan Lourens Head of School

4 The exceptional ability of young emerging artists and their passion for music will always create an extraordinary experience for concertgoers.
