In 2014 four outstanding orchestral concerts will feature Western Australia s best young musicians. Artistry! Collaboration Monday May pm Perth Concert Hall Conducted by Head of School, Dr Alan Lourens, the School of Music celebrates its community links in a concert at the Perth Concert Hall. The UWA Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus will be joined on stage by the choirs of John Septimus Roe Anglican School as part of their 25th anniversary. A combined band of 80 musicians will open the evening performing Ticheli s Simple Gifts. Culmination Friday August pm Winthrop Hall Every year, the outstanding ability and youthful passion of the emerging artists and their mentors combine to celebrate the culmination of their collaboration. Three young artists perform a movement of their chosen concerto onstage with orchestra in the finals of the prestigious VOSE competition before being joined on stage by Fiona McAndrew for a Strauss masterpiece. Innovation Saturday October pm Winthrop Hall A specially commissioned piece for the School of Music, made possible by the generous donation from a donor, will see a world premiere by internationally renowned Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe performed alongside his monumental work Memento Mori. The Concert will coincide with UWA s Institute of Advanced Studies 2013 Day of Ideas Memento Mori where he will also be presenting. Anna Goldsworthy Tuesday April pm Winthrop Hall Described by The Australian as a musical ambassador, Anna Goldsworthy is an award-winning pianist who has performed extensively throughout Australia and internationally, with highlights including solo appearances at the Teatro Colon for the Buenos Aires International Music Festival, for the Orchestra of Colours in Athens, and at the Melbourne International Arts Festival. Keyed Up! Stephen McIntyre Sunday May pm Stephen McIntyre is one of Australia s most eminent pianists and teachers and has performed as soloist and chamber music player in many countries including all major Australian orchestras. His cycle of the complete piano music of Ravel won the National Critics Award. Keyed Up! David Dolan Sunday August pm David Dolan has devoted his career as a concert pianist, researcher and teacher to the revival of the art of classical improvisation. David has performed at major concert venues and festivals, such as the Wigmore Hall and the Royal Festival Hall in London and is a professor at the Yehudi Menuhin School as well as at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Bart van Oort Sunday September pm Bart van Oort teaches fortepiano and is a lecturer in Historical Performance Practice at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (The Netherlands). Since 1997 Van Oort has made more than fifty recordings of chamber music and solo repertory, including the prize-winning 4-CD box set The Art of the Nocturne in the Nineteenth Century. Presented in association with the Institute for Advanced Studies, Andrew Foote, Head of Vocal Studies at UWA, explores the transition from solo song to the Romantic trio of singer, piano and poet and exposes its relevance to the musicians and audience of today using examples of the songs by Beethoven, Schubert and Schumann. Doors open 15 minutes prior to the performance Assembled Ensemble Hackett (UWA New Music Ensemble) 7.00pm New music deserves a place that is not on the margins, but at the epicentre of how we define, consume, perform and teach classical music. In 2014, Artist in Residence and Freedman Fellowship Genius award winner stellar clarinet player Ashley William Smith, takes a community of young artists that champion this idea uncompromisingly, to discover new worlds and ideas and dynamically interact with it. Thursday September 18 Largely Smalley: The chamber works of Roger Smalley presented alongside works of Schumann and Brahms. Directed by Louise Devenish, Piñata Percussion places a special emphasis on programming works by Australian composers, including established, emerging and student composers. 22 ON THE MAP 22 Special Events 2014 Callaway Lecture Tuesday October pm A life s music The Callaway Lecture is one of the most prestigious events on the School of Music calendar. Over the last two decades, a host of distinguished speakers have taken to the podium to deliver their thoughts on subjects as broad ranging as the effects of music on the mind, and the place of music in the arts. In 2014, the Callaway Lecture is presented in collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Studies. This year, Carmen Lawrence presents the Callaway Lecture exploring how music gives shape and meaning to our lives and what happens to us when its power is diminished. After training as a research psychologist at The University of Western Australia and lecturing in a number of Australian universities, Dr Lawrence entered politics in 1986, serving at both State and Federal levels for 21 years. She was at various times WA Minister for Education and Aboriginal affairs and was the first woman Premier and Treasurer of a State government. She shifted to Federal politics in 1994 when she was elected as the Member for Fremantle and was appointed Minister for Health and Human Services and Minister assisting the Prime Minister on the Status of Women. She has held various portfolios in Opposition, including Indigenous Affairs, Environment, Industry and Innovation and was elected national President of the Labor Party in She retired from politics in She is now a Professorial Fellow at The University of Western Australia where she is working to establish a centre to research the forces driving significant social change in key areas of contemporary challenge as well as exploring our reactions to that change. 26 ON THE MAP 26 Junior Music School The UWA School of Music Junior Music School provides fun filled classes and individual tuition that nurture and extend musical development for children from 18 months to high school students. Classes For children aged 18 months to 14 years, classes focus on the development of aural skills, tonal and rhythmic awareness, song singing, instrumental skills and movement. Led by experienced teachers, your child will be engaged in a wide variety of musical experiences that will provide them with the foundation for sound musical development and exciting musical discoveries. Instrumental Lessons Individual tuition with outstanding practitioners is available for piano, violin, flute and clarinet. Choir JMS offers enthusiastic young singers in Years 5 8 an exciting opportunity to be part of a young people s choir dedicated to high quality choral singing.
