1 Music Career Path Mr. Richard Berggren, 57, has utilized his degree in Music Education as a high school music teacher, a job whose responsibilities include keeping your room ready for the next ensemble or activity, always being prepared to "wow" your students with something new in the music, being encouraging no matter what, keeping track of instruments and music inventory, planning ahead for the next activity or concert and preparing for the event. While teaching requires a bachelor s degree, graduate school is alsoalmost necessary in the education field. In addition to the education, Berggren says that it s important one understands how ensembles work, as well as how to remain diplomatic with administration, faculty, support staff, parents and students. When asked what he enjoys most about his field of work, Berggren answered, "you don t have to teach using the same material every year; you meet a great cross-section of the student body." However, it is frustrating when teachers treat you like someone else was paying you to sabotage their classroom time. Richard recommends his field of work to anyone who enjoys studying music, loves music, and has a passion for passing on that love. He states that "networking would have been a great help," and "it s important to know what your colleagues in other school districts are doing and why." He encourages sharing one s work with peers, as it strengthens one s ability to deliver good information.
