1 1940 s It s a Date : The Ankeny High Junior Class play, Little Women, will be long remembered by everyone who sees it. Your emotions will be deeply touched; you will be amused; you will smile; you will laugh; yea verily, some of you will weep. The prelude music will begin at 7:50; the curtain for the first act will be drawn at 8 o clock. Ankeny Times, October 29, 1948 Over the Fence Discussions with your Ag Teacher, Gene H. Walker, Vocational Agriculture Instructor at Ankeny High School: Five Ankeny FFA Boys and the instructor are making arrangements to attend the annual national convention of the Future Farmers of America in Kansas City, Mo., November 14, The boys going are Donald Schonhorst, Ben Ferrier, Willard Lehman, Jerold Johnson, and Jack Schlinker. There is something going on all the time at the convention with many radio programs and celebrities from all over the country brought to provide entertainment. Fifteen to twenty thousand boys are expected from 47 states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Ankeny Times, October 29, 1948 Dr. H.L. Spalding Dies: Dr. Homer Lawrence Spalding, a physician for more than 50 years, died at his home in Ankeny, Iowa, Saturday, October 23, at 10:03 p.m. at the age of 84 years, 2 months, and 29 days. He had been in ill health for over the past two years and had retired from active practice. Funeral services were held at the Ankeny Methodist Church with Rev W.H. Meredith and Rev. P.E. Shult officiating. Organ music was rendered by Mrs. Marian Coppock. Pallbearers were Reco Logli, Lloyd Brewbaker, Marion Coppock, Art Hildreth, Chas. Howard and Russell Mowry. Dr. Spalding had many friends in and around Ankeny wad was willing to go to the second mile no matter what the weather conditions. Many of us feel we have lost on of our best friends. 3 1960 s FFA Team Wins First in Judging Contest. Shown here, left to right, are Ed Hall, Don Hoskins, and Mike Albaugh, members of the Ankeny Future Farmers of American dairy judging team which won first place in the Guernsey cow division of the FFA Dairy Contest, held at the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo. The Hawk Squak s main purpose is to make contributions to our school and to our community. The Hawk Squak will be published weekly in the Ankeny Press Citizen. It will include news about A.H.S. and the community of Ankeny. Ankeny Press Citizen, October 22, 1964 City Hall to New Location. Completion of the moving of the city offices to their new location will be completed by Monday, according to Harold Bush, Director of Public Works. The new location is at 408 Third Street, in the building formerly occupied by the Cory Hardware. Suitable remodeling is nearly completed, and moving of equipment will take place this week-end. The new quarters will house the council chambers, offices of the clerk and director of public works, the police department, and the office for paying water bills and obtaining building permits. 5 1990 s For the Ankeny Post Office, the call went out to North American Van Lines. Marcia Moravec, assistant postmaster, said she was shocked at how quickly the movers were able to transfer the contents of the old postal building at 405 SW Third Street to its new facility at 1101 N. Ankeny Blvd. The job was completed on Saturday, October 13, The actual move was an all weekend, labor intensive affair that involved 76 employee hours, not counting hours of 20 each for Postmaster Bob Doubleday and Marcia Moravec. The move involved three semi-trailer trucks and a smaller North American straight truck. Ankeny Press Citizen: Oct. 27, 1990 Freddy the Fire truck brought out some wide-eyed looks from the kindergarteners in Janet Leonard s class at Westwood Elementary. But Freddy also taught the students important lessons about fire prevention and emergencies. The demonstration was Ankeny Fire Departments efforts for Fire Prevention Week. 6 1990 s The students of Northeast Elementary school, a school that isn t even completed yet, are working hard to get the entire community behind their plastic recycle campaign. The students are living and breathing the school s motto It Can Be Done! Northeast is the only Ankeny school to enter the Des Moines area school plastic recycle contest sponsored by Blueberry Plastic. Posters made by school second graders are posted throughout Ankeny, and drop off boxes are located at Dillow s Super Valu, Fareway, Food 4 Less, and Wal-Mart. Clean, crushed #2 plastic containers can be dropped off through October 31. Students are shown dropping off their first load of plastics. Snyder and Associates houses 68 employees in its new 5,000 square foot headquarters building. The firm is involved in design and construction of transportation, airport, environmental, park and recreation, site planning and sub division projects.
