3 MUSIC out of this WORLD! Greetings! Welcome to another exciting and educational season with the Kansas City Symphony! This year s programming is sure to inspire listeners of all ages to learn and create through the power of music. Part of the John and Marny Sherman Education Series, Young People s, KinderKonzert and Link Up performances reach more than 30,000 elementary school students annually. This season s Young People s Concerts and KinderKonzerts feature cross-curricular ties between music and science. Carnegie Hall s Link Up returns this season with a brand new jazz-themed program, The Orchestra Swings! This program invites students to become a part of the Kansas City Symphony though singing and recorder performance. All of these events take place in our beautiful home at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and qualify for transportation assistance through the Open Doors Transportation Fund. Middle school, high school and college students are invited to join us for a number of different programs both in Helzberg Hall and throughout the community. From the Charles and Virginia Clark Inside Music Series to TubaChristmas to the Woman s City Club Charitable Foundation Young Artist Competition, there is something for everyone to experience. Petite Performances introduce our littlest listeners to the instruments of the orchestra through age-appropriate chamber music, singing, movement and hands-on activities. I am certain that you and your students will find ways to learn, create and become inspired through this season s programming. I look forward to seeing you soon. Sincerely, Stephanie Brimhall Education Manager, Kansas City Symphony 3

6 APRIL and MAY 2018 Grades 3-5 CARNEGIE HALL S LINK UP: The Orchestra Swings Grades 3-5 April 24, 10 a.m. & 11:30 a.m. April 25, 10 a.m. only May 15, 10 a.m. & 11:30 a.m. May 16, 10 a.m. & 11:30 a.m. Helzberg Hall Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts $2/student (does NOT include recorder) $5/student (includes recorder) $5/adult (teachers/chaperones) Swing is many things. It s a distinctive rhythmic feel, a musical era dominated by Big Band jazz, a style of dance that grew alongside the music, and that elusive-butunmistakable feeling that results when musicians are deeply tuned into each other and playing in sync or in the pocket. Though swing is characteristically associated with jazz, an orchestra can also swing. Through the Link Up repertoire, hands-on activities, and a culminating interactive performance with the Kansas City Symphony, we will explore the elements that contribute to that magical moment when the orchestra starts to swing. 6 Each student ticket includes a student workbook. Teachers also may opt to purchase student tickets that include a recorder. One teacher per school will receive Carnegie Hall s Teacher s Guide, recorder, Kansas City Symphony Teacher Training Workshop and access to Carnegie Hall s online teacher resource center.

7 Open Doors Transporation Assistance The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts will again provide bus allowances for school matinees and open dress rehearsals through its Open Doors Transportation Fund. Any school in the five-county metropolitan Kansas City area transporting at least 20 students to a Kansas City Symphony Young People s Concert, KinderKonzert, Link Up performance or Open Dress Rehearsal may apply. Funds will be awarded as long as they are available, and applications must be submitted at least five business days prior to the performance date. Public, private and non-traditional schools are invited to apply. Visit kauffmancenter.org for more information. Open Rehearsals Grades 6 and up Select Kansas City Symphony dress rehearsals are open to middle school, high school and college music students. This program offers a unique look inside a professional symphony orchestra rehearsal and includes a brief Q&A with the guest artist, conductor and/or Symphony musicians. All open dress rehearsals take place 10 a.m. Friday unless otherwise noted. Helzberg Hall Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts $2/person (students and chaperones) Reservations: Visit kcsymphony.org or call (816) (Schedule continued on next page) 7
