5 6 WASO 2015 BRAHMS FESTIVAL PINCHAS ZUKERMAN PLAYS BRAHMS BRAHMS DOUBLE CONCERTO 3 4 GARRICK OHLSSON PLAYS BRAHMS FIRST GARRICK OHLSSON PLAYS BRAHMS SECOND Pinchas Zukerman Pinchas Zukerman & Amanda Forsyth Asher Fisch Garrick Ohlsson One of the world s greatest violinists returns to WASO! A musical marriage and a radiant symphony. Dramatic and intimate - Brahms most personal orchestral works. A truly grand concerto and an epic symphony. Friday 21 August 7.pm Perth Concert Hall BRAHMS Violin Concerto BRAHMS Symphony No.1 Saturday 22 August 7.pm Perth Concert Hall Friday 28 August 7.pm Perth Concert Hall BRAHMS Piano Concerto No.1 BRAHMS Symphony No.3 Saturday 29 August 7.pm Perth Concert Hall BRAHMS Concerto for Violin and Cello BRAHMS Symphony No.2 BRAHMS Piano Concerto No.2 BRAHMS Symphony No.4 Asher Fisch conductor Pinchas Zukerman violin Brahms Violin Concerto is impassioned, noble and deeply expressive a perfect vehicle for the superlative musicianship of Pinchas Zukerman. It took Brahms over 20 years to compose his First Symphony, but when premiered in 1876 it was hailed a masterpiece. From its pounding timpani introduction through to the blazing conclusion, it is truly one of the greatest Firsts. PRE-CONCERT TALK WITH PRUE ASHURST 6.45pm, Terrace Level, Perth Concert Hall POST-CONCERT CONVERSATION WITH ASHER FISCH, PINCHAS ZUKERMAN AND ALAN DODGE AM Terrace Level, Perth Concert Hall Pinchas Zukerman appears courtesy of Stott Hoare stotthoare Asher Fisch conductor Pinchas Zukerman violin Amanda Forsyth cello Husband and wife soloists, Pinchas Zukerman and Amanda Forsyth, bring an intimate warmth to Brahms glorious Double Concerto. Composing his Second Symphony in an idyllic seaside village, Brahms wrote the melodies flow so freely that one must be careful not to trample on them. Lyrical, pastoral and concluding with a glorious burst of orchestral sunlight, the Second remains one of his most popular symphonies. PRE-CONCERT TALK WITH DR ALAN LOURENS 6.45pm, Terrace Level, Perth Concert Hall POST-CONCERT CONVERSATION WITH PINCHAS ZUKERMAN, AMANDA FORSYTH AND ALAN DODGE AM Terrace Level, Perth Concert Hall Pinchas Zukerman appears courtesy of Stott Hoare Asher Fisch conductor Garrick Ohlsson piano Brahms mighty First Piano Concerto was conceived during a period of youthful emotional turmoil. Uncompromising and dynamic, its dramatic opening launches a titanic struggle between piano and orchestra. In contrast, the poetic Third Symphony was written at the height of Brahms career. Filled with expansive melodies, its joyous longings and brooding dramas lead to a hushed and bittersweet resolution. PRE-CONCERT TALK WITH CHRISTOPHER VAN TUINEN 6.45pm, Terrace Level, Perth Concert Hall POST-CONCERT CONVERSATION WITH GARRICK OHLSSON AND WASO BOARD MEMBER MARK COUGHLAN Terrace Level, Perth Concert Hall Asher Fisch conductor Garrick Ohlsson piano There is no piano concerto grander than Brahms Second. Dramatic, rapturous, buoyant and embracing, it demands an interpretation that is both virtuosic and poetic. WASO is delighted to welcome acclaimed American pianist Garrick Ohlsson to perform this much-loved masterpiece. The extraordinary finale of the Fourth Symphony is a thrilling yet tragic conclusion to an epic work of concentrated expression, and a powerful conclusion to our celebration of the music of Brahms. WAGNER Lohengrin, Act I: Prelude TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No.5 Asher Fisch conductor Tchaikovsky s Fifth is an emotionally charged work exploring the inevitable forces of fate: passion, grief, joy, and triumph. This irresistible symphony takes you on a journey from the bleak funeral march of the opening, through moments of sunlight and grace, to the powerfully expressive finale and exultant conclusion. Asher Fisch appears courtesy of Wesfarmers Arts COPLAND Fanfare for the Common Man JOAN TOWER Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman DVORAK Symphony No.9 From the New World Giancarlo Guerrero conductor The promise of Dvořák s new home in America and the yearning for his Bohemian homeland are captured in this lyrical symphony, combining the folk music of old and new worlds. Reviewing the symphony s triumphant premiere, the New York Evening Post proclaimed it the greatest symphonic work ever composed in this country. Aaron Copland s heroic fanfare opens this Morning Symphony concert with grand, soaring rhetoric. MAHLER Symphony No.1 Titan Asher Fisch conductor Mahler believed the symphony should encompass the whole world and his astonishingly original First Symphony forever changed symphonic music. Opening with some of the most shimmering, ethereal sounds ever imagined, this work traverses a vast and varied musical landscape before concluding in a blaze of triumphant, transcendent ecstasy. Revenue from ticket sales covers less than half of our costs. Your tax deductible donation helps us achieve our goals of excellence and accessibility. What your donation can become: $25 is a student s Backstage Pass to meet the Orchestra and watch a concert. $75 covers the cost of a night out for a parent or carer of a sick child. $250 can pay for a presenter at a free community concert. $1,500 becomes a school workshop with our Education Coordinator. WASO s philanthropy program continues to grow, supporting our vision. It is an exciting time to be a part of this community of supporters, to meet our musicians and to know you have helped make a difference to our ability to touch souls and enrich lives through music. Together we can do amazing things. For more information please go to waso.com.au or contact Jane Clare, Fundraising and Philanthropy Coordinator, on or philanthropy@waso.com.au.
