1 Ln Objectives Lesson Songs/DRL Teaching Guide 1 Introduction to basic music score To learn & recognize treble clef, music staff, lines & space notes Lesson: The Staff <787> Activity: Have Fun with Baseball <789> Lesson: Line Notes & Space Notes <799> Activity Musical Flowers on Lines <773> Activity: Musical Flowers in Spaces <774> Activity: Line & Space Notes <796> Get students to recognize the treble clef. eg. trace with finger in the air and say 'treble clef' or get students to trace with finger the treble clef on slide <787> on the projector screen if it is feasible Students need to know that music staff has 5 lines & 4 spaces that the treble clef 'sits' on Line 1. Activities to reinforce concepts: Lines & Space Notes 1. Pretending student's head is a musical note, Teacher calls out 'Show me a line note', and student has to put their hands at the side of their heads. For space notes, student puts one hand on top of the head and the other below the chin to 'sandwich' the note 2. Use 5 rafia strings or masking tape to create a giant staff board on the floor. Introduce concept of ascending & descending. Get students to pretend they are line notes and that they are on the first floor. They are going to climb up the stairs to the 2 nd floor by stepping on each line as the Teacher calls out 'Line 1, line 2 etc'. Use the same idea for space notes. Town4kids Pte Ltd. CRN G. 2 3. In this activity, Teacher calls out 'children, you are line notes'. Students stand on any rafia string and do their hand action at the same time. Use same idea for space notes. 4. In this activity, Teacher calls out student names one by one eg. 'Peter, stand on line 3' to further reinforce concept. Revise Hot Cross Buns Sing the tune Hot Cross Bun in lyrics. Sing the tune in solfege with fingers in the air playing the notes. Mi-Re-Do---- Mi-Re-Do---- Do-Do-Re-Re Mi-Re-Do---- Play at slow tempo then increase speed. Town4kids Pte Ltd. CRN G. Introduce treble clef notes To introduce middle Doh, Re, Mi of the treble staff Lesson: Musical Keybaord (Doh-Mi) <776> Activity: Play The Notes (Doh-Mi) <779> Listening: Pitch (Doh-Mi) <769> Activity: Solfa & Keyboard (Doh-Mi) <785> (This is the first session students will be introduced to playing the keyboard and looking up at the score on the projector screen. It is alright if not everyone is able achieve this on the first few attempts. By the end of the module, the students should be able to play as a group together.) Introduce Middle Doh as a very special note 'Middle Doh has a pair of baby wings'; Re as 'The note that hangs from Line 1'; Mi as 'The note that sits on Line 1'. Get students to show the hand actions of each note. Song with C (Doh) <929> Finger 2 on Dino <930> Finger Walk on CD <931> Show <929> on projector. Get students to guess what are the notes shown. Pretend to look surprised when they get it right. Ask them how they know the notes are Middle Doh. Ans: 'They have baby wings'. Next, get them to sing Doh as you point to each Doh on screen. 4 3 Introduce Note Value Quarter Note & Rest Lesson: Quarter Note <805> Teacher introduces concept of Quarter note. Get students to 'draw' a pretend circle in the air, pretending to shade it, drawing the stem and ending off saying 'Quarter Note 1 count'. Get students to feel the steady 1 count beats by marching around the classroom and saying '1, 1, 1, 1...' Quarter rest can be introduced in a fun manner. Example: 'It is a good friend of the quarter note and it likes to wiggle', and students wiggle their bodies and say 'shhh' or 'mmm' Revision of lesson 1 & 2 activities & songs. It is important for young children to repeat the activities to build up the fundamentals. As the saying goes, 'practice makes perfect' Practice Session Revision Stepping Up & Down <943> Recommended steps: 1. With score projected on screen, revise treble clef by pointing to it and getting students to name it. Revise concept of line & space notes by asking students which one is a line note/space note. 2. Get students to recognise and name the music notes in solfege. Next, sing in solfege. (students say 'shh' or 'mmm' for quarter rest). 5 4 Introduce Note Value Half Note & Rest Lesson: Half Note <544> <4548> 3. Get students to play the song in the air while singing in solfege. This allows teacher to check their fingering at one glance. 4. Students play the song on keyboard. Teacher needs to go round to check on their fingering one by one, after which to get everyone to play together as a group. Revise Quarter Note & Rest. In a similar way, introduce the half note ('draw' the note in the air) and half rest (pretending to wear a hat) March to the beats of Quarter notes and Half notes. Revise Stepping Up & Down. Get students to listen and sing the song while doing simple actions/movements. (Merrily we roll along, roll along, roll along. Merrily we roll along, over the deep blue sea.) 5 Practice Session Complete learning <4548> Use the Recommended Steps in Lesson 3. For Step 4, students learn to play half song first. Revise previous concepts Learn the 2 nd half of the song in the same step by step manner. Teacher to ensure that they are using the correct fingers Different students can be made 'leaders', to lead the class when the students sing & 'play' song in the air Town4kids Pte Ltd. CRN G. 6 6 Fast & Slow in Music Introduce concepts of fast & slow in music Lesson: Tempo-Fast & Slow <5017> Listening: Juicy Apples (Fast & Slow) <5018> Relate the concepts of fast & slow to the song Merrily We Roll Along. eg. Sing & move around at a fast / slow tempo. Revise songs Stepping Up & Down and. 7 A new song in Do - Mi Song in 3/4 time signature. Lesson: Dotted Half Note <72> School Bells Are Ringing (preschool) <6593> It is not necessary for students to learn the technical name 'time signature' at this point. It is more important for them to be able to feel the 3-beats in a bar rhythm pattern. Introduce Dotted Half Note. Recommended steps: 1. Sing song with lyrics. During the interlude, students do this action 'pat on laps - clap - clap' 2. Get students to recognise and name the music notes in solfege. Next, sing in solfege. 2 nd half of song has a repeated pattern Do-Mi-Re. Ask 'how many times do you hear the pattern Do-Mi-Re?' 3. Get students to find dotted half note in the song. 4. Get students to play the song in the air while singing in solfege. This allows teacher to check their fingering at one glance. 5. Students play the song on keyboard. 7 8 Practice Session To be able to play individually or as a group and with more confidence <4548> School Bells Are Ringing <6593> Revise previously taught songs and concepts Students should be able to play the songs individually or together in a group. Vary the tempo of the songs. As a rough guide, they should be able to play at a range of tempo 60 to 70 by this session. * Lessons are planned for 8 sessions.
